Spots

Any foolproof tips on getting rid of them? It seems my face has some kind of blemish quota it needs to fulfil, cos although I'm seldom very spoty, there's almost always some pustule or other spoiling myotherwise flawless visage (ahem).

Or funny stories. I like funny stories!

some people claim putting toothpaste on isolated spots works a treat...i've not tried it myself...there's that Bio Bomb thing as well but again no idea how effective it is...tea tree oil is good for drying up oily areas tho it can work TOO well and make it peely - ack

blueski, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

the body shop do a blemish gel that's very good. also, drink lots of water.

rener, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Clinique do a good concealer that has salicylic acid in so it dries up spots. Actually, anything with salicylic acid in works for me. Never squeeze until it's gone white though! And I find doing a face mask & scrub once a week keeps things at bay too. That's all pretty girly stuff, but I wouldn't imagine you'd have a problem with that :)

I tried the toothpaste thing last night, on 4 (four) spots. None of them look any healthier. Sigh.

Jade got laughed at in Big Brother for doing this. But it does work (not any better than dedicated spot cream though) on certain types of spot. It dries them out.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

update: actually, they do look a little better. I think it's probably just the natural healing process though.

sidenote: when I do get spots pl;ural, why do they always form some kind of shape/constellation and thus draw attention to themselves even more?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I've found that keeping your hands washed/free of oil works as a preventive measure. When I'm nervous I tend to touch my face for some reason.

Crush up six aspirins with a little water and put it on your face like a mask until it dries thoroughly, then wash it off. Aspirin contains a lot of salicylic acid, so this is really good for clearing up skin.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

and if you haven't got any aspirin, use willow bark.

if haven't got any willow bark then god bless you.

haha i get constellations of spots too. at the moment i have three in a neat row, but they are really tiny pin-prick ones. i must keep myself occupied or i'll be tempted to mess with them and all of a sudden i'll have this raging eye of jupiter on my cheek and it will serve me right.

sex helps. or just an easy dose of salicylic acid. don't over do it though, that can make it worse.

Knowledge I'm glad I didn't have in 1986. Gawky 15 year old self: "Hi, would you help me clear up my acne?"

"the lower order is a mirror of the higher; the forms of earth correspond to the forms of heaven; the spots on one's skin are a chart of the incorruptible constellations; Judas in some way reflects Jesus"

alternatively just go get some pills off yr doktor. it's hormonal innit

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 24 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

you could either draw lines joining all the spots and deliberately make them an attention-seeking device, or smush a ripe tomato on your face each morning. leave it on as it drips for about 2 minutes then rinse off with cool water.
it does work, trust me. makes your skin very clean and fresh, and less likely to spot-out.
also, some comfrey ointment from your local health store will do the trick, or even better some fresh comfrey from the neighbours garden. pulp the leaves and smother the mash over your face at night before retiring. excellent stuff!
check your diet, obviously. liver processing needs to be very otm to help prevent spots, so dairy products esp cheese are not so good, and naturally alcohol is a no no. DONT SQUEEZE OR PICK.
dont get those creams that peel layers off your face. they damage your skin rather badly because they expose it before it is ready to bear the environment.
all melon-type fruits are excellent for the skin, ( eat them .)

that will be $80 thank you :-)

I remember one spot-lotion ad which had this teenage boy saying "I tried soap and water", which I loved - the idea that it was only when spots became a big problem that he thought of washing.

I expect you've tried that already!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know that my acne is just a hormonal thing because just when I am feeling grumpy and want chocolate, some spots show up. Also, the thing with them forming in the same area--might be from you nervously touching one spot, then the nastiness from that spot spreads to another area. Ew, skin issues are disgusting. Give me a new face, please.

Mandee, Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Not just soap and water, John"? Ah, nostalgia. (Sorry, John S from my school. Not that I ever said it to you, but half the class did. Ah, you don't need my apologies, you were quite good at getting your own back anyway.)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently several famous models get rid of spots by using Preparation H (yes, yes, the haemorrhoid cream) though I cannot personally vouch for its efficacy.

There are all sorts of antibacterial fash washes available, and I'm sure a pharmacist could advise you.

seven months pass...
hey.

i'm 18 now and i have had spots for about 5 years and i thought that they would never go away as most people do but then i read up on a lot of forums like this and tried some of their idea's and they have ALL worked, i now only have 2 small spots on my face (that's because of the smoking and cholcolate eating)

- use a steam room 4 times a week for about 20 min (it does depend on the tempreture of the room don't forget)
- drink around 5/6 pints of water a day (don't have too much otherwise you die!)
- cut down on dairy products
- go swimming 2/3 times a week (i think its the clorine)
- sudocreme or how ever you spell it, tee tree oil, toothpaste work ok (tee tree's the best i found)
- a lot of working out, sweating a lot takes away your toxins, obviously wash after it. get's your body looking fine too!!)
- oily fish e.g. salmon
- you may not think so but using moistureisers worked a treat, nivea for men oil control thing and one from the boots botanics range, the one i have also regenerates skin cells too incase your skin has paid for having bad skin.
- not fidling about with facial hair and just not touching your skin in general
- vitamin c tablets (natural anti toxins), the ones i take are about 1500mg, its also good to have zinc and vitamine e, you just need the right combo, its REALLY hard to find.
- possibly the most important one, don't use the same face wash all the time, try changing every 2 weeks (its ok to go back and forth if you are only using two), this is because your skin gets some what immune to them. i'm currently using some clearasil 3 in one thing (its got like a pump head nozzle on it) and clean and clear advanced or some thing). they are the tits... to be frank.
- and of course, eating well! very little amount of sweeties, alcohol, high fat stuff and none greasy foods!!
- ah yeah and don't smoke! saying that i do!
- go to your doctor and you should be able to get some roll on thing, i have not tried this but a friend of my'ne had baaad acne and he's now been using it for around 2 weeks and they have practically all gone, again it depends on your skin type.
- SEX, yes its true... sex does help i'd imagine its the sweating the sweating, it affects your hormone levels and destresses you too!! its probably the most enjoyable of them all!

well i'm quite sure a lot of these things will help, they will also get you in good shape too, best of both init, like hovis...any way, hope this things work for you... they should! oh yeah and don't expect them to start working in 2 weeks or what ever because they most probably won't, it can some times take a little while for it to start working!

all the best!

eight months pass...
OMFG

I've been passively cultivating for the past few months a gigantic lump at the front of my chest. It measured 15 millimetres across and bulged out about 5. My brother took to calling me 'Third Nipple Boy'. It was getting bad. With my mum ordering me to see a doctor (in case it was ,I dunno, a tumour or whatever) I decided to take the law into my own hands.

Now, I am not a spotty person. When I was 13 I was covered in the little bastards, but they all seemed to have gone. As it turns out, they'd all gone all right, and moreover they'd all gone to the same place. As I sat at this here computer not ten minutes ago, I reached out for the callipers, extended the arms, squeezed the two sides of the lump lightly, and plunged one of the arms inside. Upon withdrawal, a quite disturbing amount of pus shot out, some clinging to the callipers, some flying off into the middle-distance, and some locating my arm.

Instinctively, I squeezed the lump. Hard.

I can tell you now that the wall is about two metres away from my chest. When I squeezed that punctured lump, I could actually feel the jet of pus leaving my body, and that wall...that there wall, ladies and gentlemen, is now absolutely COVERED in little yellowy-red specks. Going up to a height of about 2 feet above the level of discharge. I am writing this post through a laptop screen similarly flecked with gunge. The sheer amount of ick produced and then purged is quite staggering, and in many ways I'm exceptionally proud of it.

Here's to spectacular vulgarity, ILX!

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

the callipers?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 14 January 2007 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh gosh, sorry, should have said 'some callipers', but there's only one pair of callipers on my desk. I use them as a kind of fiddly hand-exercise device, and have grown quite attached to them, hence 'the'.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

OK, just when you thought it was safe to re-enter the ILE New Answers page, I've just sprayed the bathroom wall as well! It's unbelievable how much gunk I've fostered! After my bath, I re-examined the now-deflated lump and had a squeeze. A short effort was required to expunge a small drizzle of pus, but after that, the floodgates opened for the second time, and a similar quantity of reddish dots as cover my own wall now adorn that of the bathroom. This one I'll admit was more intermittent in its copiousness, but changing the alignment of the squeeze soon rooted out every last nook and cranny of my own personal treasure-trove. Better still, this time I didn't have the music on, so I could actually hear it, a sort of sizzling, spitting, snipping sound, as the globby matter fled my chest. All in all, an utterly visceral, self-excoriating rite-of-passage I feel the stronger for having undergone.
