Pokemon Go! (Augmented reality finally has a purpose, or does it)

Just caught two on the way to buy a pastry for breakfast. Have never engaged with Pokemon before on any level. Some millennial in New Zealand has packed in his job to catch all the Pokemon on the islands and is getting free transport to do it, or something. My wife found one on the arm of our sofa last night. It's graduation this week and we screengrabbed one in front of a load of graduates, put it on the uni instagram account, and everyone went fucking batshit on yikyak.

These are end times, man.

like you i didn't know there was an ILG thread about this already because ILG isn't on my SNA; like you, my partner has become obsessed with it overnight; unlike you I did check ILG just in case ;)

maybe this can be a safe space for Pokemon Go widow(er)s though

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 08:37 (seven years ago) link

or we can discuss other uses for augmented reality, like digital-age wide games

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 08:39 (seven years ago) link

ILG is a relatively niche board so let's keep the ILE one open as a symbol of its already massive cultural impact.

we came dangerously close to introducing ourselves to our upstairs neighbours because of this game. we were walking back through the park, tt on the trail of a pidgey and me benevolently tolerating it all, when they appeared, both on their phones as well. i boomed out 'you too?', got an affirmative. but first-name terms will have to wait

they are a young-ish nerd couple like us. maybe pokemon go has rekindled outdoor romance. if you don't already go out birdwatching together *folds arms*

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 08:55 (seven years ago) link

maybe pokemon go has rekindled outdoor activities full stop. if you don't already play team sports *folds arms, looks dolefully at gutter*

^A+

ghostbusters had an augmented reality smartphone game years ago, chopped liver I guess. the Aykroyd curse, just too far ahead of the game. only 15 ghosts though, seems the sweet spot is closer to 150

it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Friday, 15 July 2016 08:58 (seven years ago) link

I went for a walk at lunchtime yesterday (in zone one, in the middle of lawyerland) and without exaggerating I must have seen 70-100 people playing this game.

Is there a social media/friends list to it or is it all real world encounters? Can't see the latter going down too well with parents.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:00 (seven years ago) link

I'm restricting playing to cafés and pubs and bus stops and stuff to prevent falling into that dorky treasure hunt thing but I'm having breakfast right now and there are like four Pokemon in here yes.

I am doing an actual life changing grown up thing today and here I am on the internet talking about Pokemon. And I've never even played Pokemon before.

As a thing for parents to do with their kids this must be a terrific new option.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:05 (seven years ago) link

I'm guessing the Pokemon legal dept will already be anticipating the first lawsuits. Kids chasing erroneous non-existent things directly into traffic or dodgy areas etc.

congratulations on your wedding vasectomy mortgage mohawk

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:08 (seven years ago) link

Somewhere out there is an unreconstructed BNP pub that's been arbitrarily turned into a Pokemon Gym or whatever. That's going to be fun.

There's no way it's not going to encourage kids to just interact with random strangers in the street and everything that comes with that.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:09 (seven years ago) link

Its not my wedding day. (Although I did set my fantasy football lineup fifteen minutes before my wedding though. I put Frank Lampard in my team and Pellegrini took the useless fat fuck off after like half an hour and I lost my head to head matchup as a result. I'm still bitter about it).

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:14 (seven years ago) link

that is nothing compared to what pokemon go will inflict on all weddings for the next 6 to 18 months

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:17 (seven years ago) link

Is that a Pokemon-proposal? :D

I'll host it without you...

you could probably contact whoever runs this shit and have me customised as a pokemon, sure

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:22 (seven years ago) link

I'm not going to ask what your special attack would be.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:24 (seven years ago) link

progge

progge

I would make this in Photoshop if I could stop playing.

maybe for anti-valentine's day (august 14th)

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

wait is that even a thing

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

sorry to everyone else on ilx btw; we're simply creating a simulation of what it will be like around couples at least one of whom play this game, which as ilxors is the majority of your social circles

imago, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:32 (seven years ago) link

There's already a thread for this - bookmark it if you feel queasy surrounded by gamers.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:01 (seven years ago) link

xp

Yes, apologies.

Back to Pokemon proper - I'm looking forward to seeing everyone slow-walk around all the central London squares at lunch, as Spearows mingle amiably on grassy banks with our fattest pigeons. Also, good luck with your life-changing thing, Matt.

I mean, you can keep this for the 'cultural impact' if you don't think gamers ever think about that, or you can imagine that this will be a thread which doesn't devolve into details and strategy within a week, but I'll bet anyone a tenner that these are imaginary barriers.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:07 (seven years ago) link

(also good luck Matt!)

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:07 (seven years ago) link

If you like your other thread so much why don't you go and live there?

This is like putting the World Cup thread on ILE rather than ILF.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:08 (seven years ago) link

(Sorry, thanks Andrew! That was an xpost)

Matt DC, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:19 (seven years ago) link

I'd honestly forgotten there was an ILF because there's usually a football thread on the front page of ILE - which is to say point taken.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 15 July 2016 10:44 (seven years ago) link
