Ninth Coint & Plick: Best Games of 2015 NOMINATION THREAD

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

Hi everyone! Now begins the nomination process for games to be included in the ninth Coint and Plick thread, showcasing ILX's favorite video games from the year 2015. I'm making a few tweaks this year, so I'll try to make is as clear as possible below.

No longer is it necessary to post every damn platform a game comes out on. This year, please use these as the "platforms":
1. Console (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360)
2. Handheld (3DS, VITA)
3. Mobile (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, idk Blackberry?)
4. Computer (Mac, PC, Linux / executable)
5. Browser
6. Other (idk, vr? vr's usually computer anyway)

This will make it clear the nature of how it's played. It might not tell you if it's on Mac or PC but you can look that up once you read about it. I think this'll just make the whole thing more readable. Also make a note if it's free.

As always: games released in 2015 only. If it's a re-release, it's up for debate (I wanna KNOW that you played the re-release, and aren't just voting for e.g. Nathan Drake Collection because you played it on PS3 years ago and didn't play anything this year). No limit on number of nominations per person. If it's a released game with new content, you can nominate the content (e.g. Destiny the Taken King) unless it's not really a notable amount of content (e.g. they added Galactus to Marvel Puzzle Quest). My point here is that if it's on an old nomination list, it's probably not on this nomination list.

If it's obscure, please include a link or something.

Happy nominating!

let's talk when it's not a 7-color match-3 game featuring marvel superheroes and villains using powers based on built up gems of those colours or something

no frog-fractions style leftfield games this year that i ran into and recall -- maybe i'm just not paying sufficient attention? would welcome any suggestions along those lines.

big WHOIS aka the nameserver (s.clover), Monday, 4 January 2016 22:20 (eight years ago) link

We had a separate listing for IF [interactive fiction] on some previous years' lists, as those games often require an interpreter. I'd quite like to keep IF as a category in its own right, but I think most new inform/z-code/glulx/whatever they are games are available to play in-browser through Parchment these days, so should I nominate them as browser games?

emil.y, Monday, 4 January 2016 22:29 (eight years ago) link

(And this is the reason why it was IF and not anything else - pretty sure I just conflated script, file type and platform in my examples there.)

emil.y, Monday, 4 January 2016 22:30 (eight years ago) link

For something like that it makes sense to put computer and browser (as some games will have to be computer and mobile, or computer and console), since both are valid ways to access them. I'm mostly only including the platforms to show people how they're accessed.

nerd shit (Will M.), Monday, 4 January 2016 22:31 (eight years ago) link

OK. Will sort my noms shortly.

emil.y, Monday, 4 January 2016 22:33 (eight years ago) link

z-code was designed by inform. iirc last i checked in on it emily short corroborated on a 'natural language' update of that i used after i gave up on tads. speaking of which does anyone still make games in tads? there were also a lot of avant games (i think that's what it was called) when i was writing if that were super simple to use (and generally produced inferior quality pieces ime ymmv) i wonder if it has fallen out of use since.

Mordy, Monday, 4 January 2016 22:35 (eight years ago) link

tads 3 came out after i had switched over to z-code but i got the feeling it was maybe more useful for extensive multimedia integration? and i was not so interested in including music + video and stuff

carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:03 (eight years ago) link

You can apparently play with a PC (no VR) and tablets/phones/other copmuters (for the manual), iirc

nerd shit (Will M.), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:41 (eight years ago) link

haha yeah sure but that still means explaining to at least two friends 'so there's this game, it's, er, it's a VR game, but it's not, mostly you look at pdfs on your phone ...'

carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:45 (eight years ago) link

Wow, I'm realizing that it's entirely possible that Jackbox Party Pack 2 is the only 2015 release that I've played. I might need to submit the stuff I own and haven't played as nominations just to get my ass in gear.

marvel puzzle quest : I will vote for it, whether it's allowed or not, so why not just allow it

I played some very shitty "games" too that I won't nominate unless we're doing a shit ballot.

my new year's resolution this year is to play better games, but given current financial realities plus backlogs that won't mean 2016 games

There will be a regular ballot per previous years (with points allotted to games etc)
+ there will be a line to put 1-3 games not released in 2015 which will get a separate mini-rollout, this is where mpq and chrono trigger belong
+ there will be a line to put biggest disappointment/worst game of 2015

there will not be mpq or chrono trigger on the main ballot
goat simulator can be nominated if you want to vote for the PORT TO CONSOLE anyone who votes for it because they played the pc version in 2015 is a poxy fule

nerd shit (Will M.), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 15:22 (eight years ago) link

an honest ballot for me has to include MPQ and P&D for 2015. don't see why they don't fall under MMO rules because they are being updated literally every week

Nhex, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 15:29 (eight years ago) link

It's not really the same thing though - I'd be interested on the distinction between say Warlords of Draenor (WoW's fifth expansion, a lot of content for levelling to 100) and Patch 6.2 (some new mechanics and a 13-boss raid). Are they both eligible (or rather would they be if they came out the same year)?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 15:31 (eight years ago) link

I will vote for MPQ no matter what. if it's not allowed I'll send a ballot with just MPQ. ride or die.

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 15:33 (eight years ago) link

cool i love it when ppl go hardline for dumb shit like voting for a game that came #1 in 2013

nerd shit (Will M.), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 15:35 (eight years ago) link

Might be the lightest mobile year in a few years. I guess MPQ is sucking up everyone's phone-game time.

not anything really interesting or genre busting for me, which is the fun I have on mobile. just sort of some nice "a-list" titles that play it a bit safe. and of course microtransactions really sucking the "pure fun" out of everything.

Beef Wets (Old Lunch), Thursday, 7 January 2016 23:41 (eight years ago) link

couple browser games:

There Is No Game
Ennuigi

anyone play any of the three telltale series this year? i've heard good things about tales from the borderlands, but next to nothing about minecraft story mode/game of thrones.

the jackal-snouted problem man (reddening), Monday, 11 January 2016 01:27 (eight years ago) link

i thought tales was pretty great, but i have no idea how much of that is due to telltale, and how much of that is due to me enjoying borderlands stuff. any recs on if i liked that one which others i'd like?

(best tales stuff was imho all the franchise-specific gags -- especially playing off the loot & shoot mechanics, either denying the opportunity to collect and use cool guns, or having characters obsessed with the collecting of cool guns in inappropriate situations)

big WHOIS aka the nameserver (s.clover), Monday, 11 January 2016 02:30 (eight years ago) link

Walking Dead would be your obvious first choice.

Fran Bow (computer/mobile)
King's Quest: Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember (computer/console)

i don't know if i'll end up voting for it, but:

Cluck Yegger in Escape From the Planet of the Poultroid (computer/mobile)

i'm just tickled that the guys who made Space Quest back in the eighties have released a Five Nights At Freddy's parody, of all things.

Nhex, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:14 (eight years ago) link

How many votes do people generally submit? I've only recently started playing video games again, having bought a PS4, and I've probably played about 12 eligible games (though noticing that AC: Syndicate wasn't nommed so 11, I guess) and I feel like my participation would tilt this in favour of AAA titles which is mostly what I've played (save, I think, 4 titles). I don't want to swing into the hardcore gamers world and muck things up with yet another vote for x or y.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 22 January 2016 01:09 (eight years ago) link

and fair warning, despite the fact that I know it has many, many problems I would probably rank Mad Max pretty high.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 22 January 2016 01:10 (eight years ago) link

imho the joy of the list is that we roll out [almost?] all of it and you have AAA titles next to little indie studio or even hobbyist stuff. idk if f4 is my favorite game of the year but i'll vote v highly for it and my guess is it'll do v well in this poll

Mordy, Friday, 22 January 2016 01:11 (eight years ago) link

even if you rate mad max high, i doubt it will make the top 20 unless we get like NO ballots this year. i am always worried that we won't.

i think last year i rolled out everything with at least 6 points, lol.

'talking body' robbed due to tove-splitting (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 01:27 (eight years ago) link

Oh wow, AC Syndicate should totally be on the noms list. Also, don't hate me but I've been playing a lot of Pokemon Picross on 3DS the last couple of days and that should probably be on there too.

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 07:52 (eight years ago) link

Oh and Black Ops 3. Not that I've played it, but that should be included surely?

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 07:58 (eight years ago) link

Battlefield Hardline and Star Wars Battlefront both missing! It's probably worth just auto including the top 30 best sellers of the year really because we seem to have forgotten about a lot of them.

Oh and Bastion came out for Vita this year, I might get around get to playing that before voting.

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 08:04 (eight years ago) link

If no-one's thought about them enough to nominate them, what's the point though?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 22 January 2016 10:41 (eight years ago) link

(regarding the manshooties - no beef with Bastion or Pokemon Picross!)

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 22 January 2016 10:42 (eight years ago) link

if bastion is one of the best 77 games to come out this year including everything released for everything let's call off the coint and plick and all kill ourselves

carly rae jetson (thomp), Friday, 22 January 2016 10:48 (eight years ago) link

And with those ones (syndicate, picross, black ops, hardline, battlefront, bastion port) the floor is closed for nominations. Ballot thread shortly.

If no-one's thought about them enough to nominate them, what's the point though?

Yeah, well I'll admit I'm a bit unsure of the intended purpose behind a noms list anyway, but in the past it's definitely worked for me as a good source of "oh wow, yeah I did play that, and it was great" memory jogging. If that's what it's meant to do then it makes sense to keep it pretty comprehensive, no? Presumably we want more ballots than nominators, in which case the list should try to take into account stuff the nominators haven't played but other people might want to vote for.

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 16:58 (eight years ago) link

I do indeed want a comprehensive list but not at the expense of readability in the end. Which is why I don't find lists of every eligible game of the year. I could come at it with a like of 500 or 1000 or whatever games, with hundreds probably being ports, but that just makes it harder to actually sort through and go "oh yeah, that!"

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:59 (eight years ago) link

I'm also not going to discount a write-in.

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:01 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that's fair.

So under those criteria I don't think it's a foul to suggest we include the first and fourth best selling games of the year, heh.

(xp) oh good because I also forgot Disney Infinity 3.0, oops.

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:05 (eight years ago) link

And Lego Dimensions, and Lego Jurassic World.

JimD, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:06 (eight years ago) link

I hope the new Lego Marvel game will be eligible next year since it came out at the end of 2015. I'm sure it's fantastic but there's no way I'm paying new game prices to find out.

this game? says it isn't out yet

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:23 (eight years ago) link

Ohhhh, duh. I'd seen it for sale online and didn't realize it was for preorders.
