Forrest McNeil's "Review"

As far as deep, dark, compelling commentaries on straight white male hegemony and general cluelessness go this show is infuckingcredible. a satire of willfully destructive behavior and the flimsy justifications that accompany it (is it to make "art"? to be "famous"? or "rich"? or all of them? Is it just to show that he can do it and, in many senses, get away with it?) Feel like a million thinkpieces could be written about it but people are missing how rich the show is.

the leering complicity of everyone else in the show, enabling his behavior = audience stand-ins

the actor is very good in this. mark wahlberg couldn't do that role.

his propensity for rationalizing his behavior with canned platitudes and "lessons learned", often directly to people he's victimized, is a thing of beauty

that's a good point but i still say wahlberg couldn't do this role as well.

man they are really doubling down on the real-life consequences of his actions now - violent deaths, two houses destroyed etc

This show is pretty great.

(and I am running out the door so that is all i have to say about it now except that the mark wahlberg thing is very random and weird PN)

Only seen season one but loved it.

With this, Rich & Morty and Bojack Horseman, comedy has gotten incredibly depressive these last couple of years...

i enjoyed season one, s2 feels a lot like nothing more than a repeat of the last go round and it's not grabbing me this time

As the critic Sean T. Collins wrote in a smart piece in the Observer, “Review” may appear to be a parody of reality TV, but it’s really a jab at the “Golden Age” anti-hero cable drama. It takes the “ ‘man ruins all he cares about in the name of something that makes him nominally freer and more powerful’ structure of the genre” and then mines it for laughs, not gravitas.

I feel like I really want this show to jsut do ONE low-stakes episode, and soon, because it is escalating so hard that it's getting hard to keep suspending disbelief in a way. like an episode where he just eats spicy food and poops at a wedding or something to cleanse the palate

it seems like comedy central has been pretty good at keeping critically beloved shows around, and review is certainly critically beloved

I stopped watching this show when I got to the part where [spoiler alert, if you don't want to know a significant plot detail about the first season of this show read no further] Forrest accidentally kills his ex-wife's father. That was just too much for me. It went from from bleakly funny to just brutal for brutality's sake. I gather from the posts in this thread so far that I probably wouldn't like where it's gone since.

They've done an awful lot of promotion on tv websites for the show, though, right? It seems to me as if they want the show to function. Also, there was a whole segment where he was just chilling in a rowboat, what more do you want?

I've only seen the first episode, but it's weird to me that Andy Daly's name appears nowhere in this thread.

the meeting with the producer/lawyer about how the show definitely could not condone him murdering anyone was so perfect

"chilling in a rowboat" is an hilarious recounting of that incredibly bleak segment but yes, more moments like this would be kinda nice

Yeah that's the episode I'd go with. Oh well, will just have to wait until it's been off the air for five years and suddenly all of these people will be asking me if I've ever seen this Review show.

I remember being skeptical when someone tried to sell it to me ("it's about this guy that's a reviewer, but he reviews, like...life"), and then being in the same position when I was trying to sell it to someone else. It doesn't lend itself well to explanation, but people should just watch it.

Yeah! And sadly the selling point that it has Andy Daly starring in it means nothing to 99% of the people I talk to.

Also, it's episodic, but also serial, and works best in order, start to finish.

although they've announced episodes 1-3, they are also being extremely, intentionally coy about exactly how many episodes are in this season, which leads me to believe that something very interesting is gonna happen to this show in a couple weeks

Off to an amazing start

Yeah first ep was great. Urbaniak is so good in this, and I loved the Clockwork Orange style home and assistant he had.

lol @ murder trial resolution. and the whole "Forgiveness" review.

This show is completely brilliant--the Helen Keller courtroom scene was one of the funniest things I've ever seen

my wife and I were joking around about how this will end, ie. Forrest on his deathbed reviewing "Death" and choking out "five.... stars!" before croaking

I think the first line his lawyer ever says (after showing up late) is "Sorry, I couldn't find my shoes!" Which is just so perfect.

"Do you want them to think you're a murderer or a self-defenser?"

I think the final review is probably gonna be "Life". I'd say its about 50/50 he survives the series

Amazing just how they went so dark in season 2 and then went darker still for season 3.

grant's final twist of the knife was brutal

swapping places with the co-host and having her just say, "eh, I decided not to do it" was pretty brilliant

and the cryogenics thing was so close to him actually reviewing "death" like I was joking about above

the last call was from the guy who played myles barlow on the original review, the australian show upon which the american one is based. i know this bc i just started watching the original bc i just heard of it!

yeah! i had no idea either! "review with myles barlow", i've watched 3 eps so far, its different enough (simply because it's not andy daly, and really, who is?) to enjoy.

really thought they were gonna kill him off but I think Forrest blowing his only chance at redemption was a better ending

yeah i whooped when he came on. the australian REVIEW is darker in some ways than the US version, but in other ways not. i like it (it's on hulu in case anyone wants to check it out).

Not sure the last three episodes were terribly funny, but given I hasn't expected the show to come back at all, I guess they let us down easy OK.
