Why do these notices require people actually be the type of part they want to cast? Isn't being able to convincingly portray someone you aren't pretty much the definition of acting?

no one is going to cast an old fat black man to play a thin white female teenager in a commercial because life is just not that awesome; the closest we get are those Snickers commercials and even there you have to be famous first

Well no but why do you have to actually live in a trailer park? or be a superfan of dumb 80s hair metal? or be a REAL close knit family?

It's mostly because I'm taking from commercials. They want to slap that "Real Match.com Couple" label, for example, over the actors when they can, for liability-authenticity but also because there are so many people willing to audition in Los Angeles that you can ask and yea shall receive. Also, most actors are bad actors so you can maybe cut the dross by asking that real doctors audition instead of getting an extra 200 dudes aged 28-60 who have nothing to lose wasting you time. And if you're a great actor you can lie and fool them and they won't care because you pulled it off for the camera.

You can ask for beautiful women 18-25, ***half-Asian*** and with a comedy background, and you'll get 150-500 girls potentially, including about 50-200 blonde girls who are disobeying or ignoring the casting call because they hope you'll be so wowed by their looks that you'll cast them anyway.

So casting is looking to get the best people but also narrow the field, at once.

Or you're trying to cast the widest net while still having a great filter.

Hannibal would be in that territory, but he's still pretty chill in a way they'd like. The best example would be a character actor such as this guy Wayne Wilderson, who played a white collar criminal on the America version of the Office and is always a gentle, quiet guy whenever I've seen him.
