Was "Born in the U.S.A." played at Reagan rallies during the '84 election? Or was Reagan's attempted appropriation limited to mentioning Springsteen's name once during a stump speech in NJ?

I think the 2nd part is correct

interesting RS article about that:

The Dem version of this is Obama using "Only in America" by Brooks & Dunn at his convention.

“If all Americans,” Will would later write in his column about his backstage experience, “in labor and management, who make steel or cars or shoes or textiles—made their products with as much energy and confidence as Springsteen and his merry band make music, there would be no need for Congress to be thinking about protectionism.”

Dave Marsh and Greil Marcus had the perfect response:

In other words, if you find slapping bumpers onto compact cars less fulfilling than singing rock and roll songs in front of adoring masses, fuck off.

The Pretender's "My City Was Gone" has been the Rush Limbaugh intro/bumper music since 1984.

My City Was Gone is a song by Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders in which she bashes real estate developers. You know, I'm big time conservative; I support real estate development. Here I'm choosing as a theme song a song that rips them to shreds, but I didn't really pick it for the lyrics because I don't play the lyrics. I picked it simply because it had an unmistakable, totally recognizable bass line

at an anti-Iran deal rally w Ted Cruz:

Nearby, a man wearing a Captain America costume donned Ted Cruz pins and waved the largest American flag of the event as well as an equally large Marine Corps flag. Soon afterward, Trump was briefly introduced to R.E.M. song featuring the lyric, "It's the end of the world as we know it"—which appeared to sum up how many in the crowd see the Obama administration.

Am I the only one that finds all of this incredibly pompous? Politicians should be allowed to play any goddamn music they want.
