def was a bit choked up by this and its end; it's v good, episodic but really feels like a novel, and im impressed they could tell it all in 4 hrs

johnny crunch, Thursday, 6 November 2014 02:43 (nine years ago) link

Looking at the novel's full character list, amazed it's only 288 pages, barely longer than the teleplay for this thing musta been (with 1/20 or so the characters)

Anyway this was great for a lot of reasons I'm too tired to get into right now, everyone should watch it

yea i guess theyre actually connected short stories? which makes a little more sense that it could be that short

and it won the pulitzer! i mean, who knew

has anyone read it?

Just caught the first ep and liked this better than any other series this year so far, some wonderful acting and some top notch character studies. McDormand and Jenkins both put incredible shifts in. I loved that mouse ran over the cat scene in the kitchen, the kid's laugh and McDormands withering Go see your girlfriend response. I wish these tardy torrent sites would upload the last 3 eps I am literally dying to see them.

i read it. it's really good and a fairly quick read. the list of characters does make it seem like an epic but a lot of them are mentioned once or twice. also a few of the stories only feature olive briefly or simply mentioned by other characters, so i imagine those stories won't be in the HBO version. i watched the first episode last night and thought it captured the tone well. it's deeply sad, but i like olive so much that it is still enjoyable to watch. very glad that donuts were featured in the opening credits, they get mentioned a lot in the book.

be careful about torrenting HBO, i know several people who got letters from their ISP about it. unless of course you know of some foolproof way of getting these episodes, in which case hook a brother up

I use Peerblock and have never had any trouble.

olive is p close to livia, its true

johnny crunch, Friday, 7 November 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

Just watched the 2nd ep and decided that this is too good to be binge watched and am saving the last 2 for the weekend. Was thinking since 6 feet under I haven't seen much of Jenkins but when you look up his filmography he is in plenty of mainstream movies of the last two decades. Olive is a far better written character than Livia Soprano and her misanthropy is still comparatively very charming and witty, as rude as she is her character is constantly otm with her observations, rather than just outright rude.

i watched all four episodes in one sitting somehow and thought it was excellent. thankfully it kinda blurs together so it'll be fresh whenever i revisit it. but really truly loved this.

This was powerful as hell. Good casting of Bill Murray in the last part.

just watched the first segment -- uniformly great acting, esp Jenkins and Zoe Kazan i thought.

as rude as she is her character is constantly otm with her observations,

well telling the truth constantly is a hellish thing to do to people.

does that include using pink marker on the d-in-law's white garments?

photographed by Fred Elmes btw (Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, The Ice Storm et al)

Watched ep 1 with someone who wasn't anywhere near as receptive as I. "I don't like any of these characters." I said "I have correspondence with all of them."
