times i have paid for my parents dinner:

- when its one of: their birthday, fathers day, mothers day
- when its a place i have chosen and invited them to
- when i have been staying with them and theyve bought multiple meals for my partner and i

otherwise i am letting my parents pay they can afford it also my stepdad is a food snob and always picks expensive places

I notice you asked when is it acceptable, rather than expected or usual. In my view it would be acceptable as soon as you have income source of any type that is independent of your parents and you feel like making the gesture.

Just don't spring it on them by grabbing the check when they were expecting to pay. Set it up ahead of time that you are taking them out.
