This doesn't surprise me. The basic assumption with most sapient anthropomorphic animals who lead a human-like life seems to be that they are actually human, they've just been drawn like animals for one reason or another. (Characters like Bugs Bunny who admit to being animals and have some animal-like characteristics are the exception.) Though it gets a bit weird when they interact with "real" animals. i find this troublesome. hello kitty's appeal is largely dependent on the idea that she is a cat. cats are cute, small and weirdly aloof, just like hello kitty. they often come equipped with bags and sunglasses and suchlike. the charmm dissipates somewhat if she's just a strangely formed friend. i mean, her surname is "kitty", hello. this has to have been noticed by her brand managers.
