c/d: regularly calling out of work on yr birthday just because it's yr birthday

Am I wrong in thinking that this is intensely juvenile, especially if it's, like, on a Tuesday? Do people past their teens do this? I don't mean years where you happen to have something planned, but rather the mentality of "Oh, it's my birthday! I guess I'll call out, just 'cause."

gtfo.

Just ask for the day off like a normal human.

If you work in retail or food service, it's likely frowned upon. If you're just in a cubicle doin' office shit, though, nobody cares if you take your birthday off or not.

IMO PTO is PTO; if you have the time available, you should be able to take a day off for whatever reason you feel like

stevie do you mean people calling in sick or something? or using a vacation day?

marcos, Thursday, 24 July 2014 17:29 (nine years ago) link

totally agree about pto but i find ppl who get really into the actual date of their birthday kind of weird. like you can celebrate on a more convenient nearby date and it actually won't matter at all.

i think it is natural to avoid a place of death when you are celebrating your continued survival

j., Thursday, 24 July 2014 17:35 (nine years ago) link

you should go to a bar or something instead

I always take the day off for my birthday. Lie-in, pub lunch, ice cream...

kinder, Thursday, 24 July 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

I always take my birthday off if I have the PTO. To me it's about as depressing as having to work on Christmas. Even if I don't have plans, I take it off and at least sleep in!

I am pro-taking your birthday off. I have trouble finding time to have "me time" by myself so it's a good excuse to go see a movie, get lunch out somewhere, etc., without social or family obligations. But I book it off ahead of time, I don't call in sick or whatever.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 24 July 2014 18:16 (nine years ago) link

And yeah it's arbitrary and I have occasionally taken other days off for similar purposes when I have lots of vacation time saved up but a birthday is a good excuse.

OTM, also you can celebrate Christmas in August. Thanksgiving can be the entire month of February. Arbor Day was invented by the greeting card companies. St. Patrick's Day is a state of mind.

oh i'm sorry i didn't realize that your birthday was a national holiday

lol i can actually seem some irish-american drunk college shithead wearing a t-shirt w/ this and partying all year long like it's good ol st. paddy's day

marcos, Thursday, 24 July 2014 18:25 (nine years ago) link

Since mine is between Christmas and New Year and my relatives happen to live far away I usually take the entire week off but hell yes I would take it off no matter when it was and I don't care if that's childish. It's my day! I've worked it a couple times and it sucked tbh. I am very pro birthdays and doing whatever the hell you want.

with the exception of one hour that I had to log in a few years back to put out a fire, I have not worked on my birthday since I've been gainfully employed. I always use my PTO.

calling out sick, though, when you're not really sick, is never classic and always dud...cuz you leave your co-workers in a lurch. Whereas with PTO, they're expecting you to be out.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 24 July 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

i've never done this but i'm bad at using up all my PTO for the year so i probably should

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 July 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

Sorry, I meant like ppl who don't have any banked PTO and didn't request off in advanced and are just like "Nope, not gonna come in bcz it's my BIRTHDAY!!!!", either in an office setting or retail or whatever

johnny crunch, Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

I guess I just dgaf abt birthday but it's totally cool to like use it as an excuse to have a You Day! Just be smart abt it.

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

it doesn't matter, soon enough personal time off won't exist in the modern workplace, DOOMED

Nhex, Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

Everybody gets their birthday off where I work. Apparently this was done years ago as recompense when they took away some holiday (Good Friday, I think). And it's GREAT.

first is the worst (askance johnson), Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

I'm always happy to work on Good Friday, just as a thumb in the eye of the theocracy.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

I didn't know that people actually have birthdays

, Thursday, 24 July 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

Whenever I have to work with someone and it's their actual birthday I find they have no interest in being there or doing any work anyway.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 24 July 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

When I work on my birthday I think about how it's my birthday and just sort of go "Oh." maybe 3 or 4x throughout the day.

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 July 2014 22:01 (nine years ago) link

and then you cut yourself

Nhex, Thursday, 24 July 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

any pretext your co-workers deem justifiable for a "sick" day should be taken advantage of. as long as they're fine with it, OF COURSE I am going to do it.

I've done a few extra hours this week and they're giving me a half day in lieu. Which I am using to leave a couple of hours early on my birthday in a couple of weeks and come in a couple of hours late the next day. I guess it depends if I have anything planned on my birthday if I take time off or not. This year I do.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 25 July 2014 09:59 (nine years ago) link
