Hang on, I meant sparrow, I think.

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:43 (twenty years ago) link

One of the pubdrinkers had Baynham's face.

I thought it was very funny. Especially Phillip's 'trouble' at the end. And the monkey's photo obsession.

See, I cheered after the humans part...because I didnt know there was a second part to the question.

Wow, that was terrific. "The planet of men and women, ifyouwill."

As for Coogan only having one voice well, y'know, that's funny cos the guy got his break in the first place as an impressionist. See 1988 Royal Variety Show (or somesuch), his double act with John Thomson, Spitting Image, Spartacus Mills, The Pool, etc.

I could do without the rodent and the monkey. But, y'know, every show needs a Twist.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

You don't like Twist?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:08 (twenty years ago) link

Have you been pulling my leg, Michael? The first two episodes of series 2 of Spaced were much better than series 1. And when you put the DVD in the machine it says, 'get off, you bummer'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 21 May 2004 07:48 (twenty years ago) link

I think you're just getting used to it, PJM; you didn't have the 12-month fog of anticipation as season #2 loomed. Also: tanned and slim Jessica Stevenson did not compute. Or alternatively, you're right.

I don't dislike Twist; I was going to say 'Mike from The Young Ones' but it wasn't as smart-arsed.

Another good show this week, I thought. I may be easily pleased though - Coogan only needs to slip into his Deep Bath register for phrases like "rusty ambulance" and I'm choking on my Quorn fillets. "Meat drawer" struck home too and I love the sing-a-not-a-longs.

I popped over to Cook'd and Bomb'd to see if the comedy netgeeks were as chuffed as me with the new Baynham product and discovered that it was 'unfunny, badly-animated garbage' with the usual wistful moan about 'remember how good he was in 199x'. If the same script was on R4 they'd be in excelsis.

In fairness, when the grim reaper ask me what the funniest thing I've ever seen is, it's not going to be a satire on middle-class obliviousness. Though some of it is pretty good, and "It's the internet!" will live in my heart for a while.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago) link

I was giggling like an idiot at some of the stuff on Monday, far more so than the one before, especially when the monkey spends all their money on a broken laptop and the sparrow makes him dunk himself in the sink repeatedly, and he's all 'put your head in the water again please. RIGHT IN.' and the monkey's just like doing it even though he's eighteen times the size of him, and the horse is all 'STOP SUGGESTING HE DOES THAT' in the Coogan voice.

Fergal (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:30 (twenty years ago) link

I liked it when the horse fell down the stairs.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:31 (twenty years ago) link

Mark the Sparrow makes this, I think. The sequence from him pointing out all the farm equipment to the end of the sing-a-not-a-long of bringing in the sheaves had me in hysterics.

4/6 Romance is in the air for Philip, and Claire becomes a mother - but is Winona doomed to be left on the shelf?

It clashes with BBC News with... Natasha Kaplinsky!!!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 31 May 2004 09:30 (twenty years ago) link

hmmm, i'm not sure about this

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago) link

and yes the BBC lumping different comedy shows together within the same hour or two is sort of annoying if you like one but hate the other (i think i can take or leave I Am Not An Animal thus far but i refuse to watch TPOLAPOCP) - but then again maybe it's their way of luring enthusiasts of conventional sitcom towards the more surreal unorthodox stuff

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

TPOLAPOCP = Mexican volcano

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 06:32 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think I'm ever going to be able to watch a whole episode *all the way through*, I get fed up. Also, it was very violent at the beginning and they seem to be upping the filth factor. I found it quite disturbing.

Surreal comedy doesn't seem to have much to do with surrealism, not that I'd know, so what I'm wondering is, what would be a better label for surreal comedy?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:04 (twenty years ago) link

yes i couldn't think of a more apt label, it's not that surreal once you get past the initial premise.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:05 (twenty years ago) link

what would be a better label for surreal comedy?

Disturbtainment? Oddcom? Unencumberedbyrealitygagfest.

I taped this cos I didn't fancy watching it with the in-laws. Mrs Berry seemed to enjoy (not necessarily a vintage) Porridge the other night though.

three years pass...

Revive!

I am about to watch the American THE OFFICE - I'll report back in 40 minutes.

Note #1 - it uses ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" as its theme tune.

Interesting that the Office (US) pilot episode had been around for almost a full year before it finally aired (March 24, 2005).

I never realized how much The Office theme song sounds like "Mr. Blue Sky" but, hell it sure does.
