Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fred is fine, he posted from his account. But he passed the news that Mike Daddino works at the WTC. :-( :-(

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Taliban will be giving a press conference soon.

Tadeusz, my phone works I'm in NJ and about 4 miles from Hoboken where I live. If you need me to make a call for you, just say so.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh god.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fred is ok by all accounts. Only person unaccounted for is Mike Daddino who apparently works in WTC. Pray that he is ok.

Canada has just closed its airports. Meaning there are loads of aeroplanes in the air with nowhere to land.... Paranoia making things worse?

Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

MSNBC just reported that NYC Police are evacuating a high school (Stuyvesant?) due to a bomb threat.

I'm just as fearful about the retaliation, if not more so.

Andy, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

At some point they'll have to at least let people land, but that's about it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ed, what about Linzi? is she in nyc with you?

gareth, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

how many floors on the world trade centre?, reports state that anything above the 67 level would have been killed by the impact of the plane, i.e anything above this would be trapped, and the bleak pictures of the second tower of the plane crashing into the tower.

from the floors downwards from the impact, how many managed to escape before the second tower collapsed? the delay was about 15-20 minutes?

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

~110 floors I think.

My friend Ryan's just emailed me to say he's okay, thank goodness he works at the opposite end of Manhattan! He can see the devastation from the top of his building and says he's never seen anything like it. It wouldn't surprise me if he's feeling a little homesick for the graffiti strewn suburbs of South Ockendon right now.

from another mailing list

Just pulled the following off www.emergency.com, it seems some action has been anticipated since at least Friday:

"Worldwide Caution - Public Announcement

Dtd. September 7, 2001

Over the last several months, the U.S. Government has learned that U.S. citizens and interests abroad may be at increased risk of a terrorist action from extremist groups. In addition, we have received unconfirmed information that terrorist actions may be taken against U.S. military facilities and/or establishments frequented by U.S. military personnel in Korea and Japan. We are also concerned about information we received in May 2001 that American citizens may be the target of a terrorist threat from extremist groups with links to Usama Bin Ladin's Al-Qaida organization. In the past, such individuals have not distinguished between official and civilian targets. As always, we take this information seriously. U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert.

U.S. citizens are urged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness to reduce their vulnerability. Americans should maintain a low profile, vary routes and times for all required travel, and treat mail and packages from unfamiliar sources with suspicion. In addition, American citizens are also urged to avoid contact with any suspicious, unfamiliar objects, and to report the presence of the objects to local authorities. Vehicles should not be left unattended, if at all possible, and should be kept locked at all times.

U.S. Government personnel overseas have been advised to take the same precautions. In addition, U.S. Government facilities have and will continue to temporarily close or suspend public services as necessary to review their security posture and ensure its adequacy.

U.S. citizens planning to travel abroad should consult the Department of State's Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets, and regional travel brochures, all of which are available at the Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov. We will continue to provide updated information should it become available. American citizens overseas may contact the American Citizens Services unit of the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate by telephone or fax for up-to-date information on security conditions. In addition, American citizens in need of emergency assistance should telephone the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate before visiting the Embassy or Consulate.

Department of State travel information and publications are available at Internet address: http://travel.state.gov. U.S. travelers may hear recorded information by calling the Department of State in Washington, D.C. at 202-647-5225 from their touch-tone telephone, or receive information by automated telefax by dialing 202-647-3000 from their fax machine.

This Public Announcement supersedes the Public Announcement - Worldwide Caution of June 22, 2001 to inform U.S. citizens of unconfirmed threats against U.S. military facilities, personnel and establishments frequented by U.S. military personnel. This Public Announcement expires on December 22, 2001.

Flights involved (these are not all confirmed):

United Airlines 175 BOS-LAX (allegedly the second WTC crash)
United Airlines 93 (not sure of destination, confirmed by united.com)
At least one American Airlines flight (can't find flight #, but confirmed 164 people were lost)

There's a fourth flight, but I can't track down the info for it.

Islamic Jihad just claimed responsibility. Several Jewish friends of mine are currently arguing over whether they actually did it or not. This is in addition to anthoer Palestinian group which has claimed responsibility.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terroristsstruck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.

• In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.

• Reports said oen plane appeared to be an American Airlines Boeing 767 that had been hijacked after take-off from Boston. American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents," one leaving Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard, and the second leaving Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles

• About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, part of which later collapsed.

• United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to the attacks.

• The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated.

• In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.

• All international flights were diverted to Canada.

• Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.

• President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."

• In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.

• The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.

• New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries.

• U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

There are I believe 110 floors in the WTC. 20 or so yYears ago, it was not rented out completely, when the city was broke. Now it is and there are loads of shops (really an entire mall) on the ground floor. Stuyvesant H.S. is within walking distance, perhaps 1/2 a mile avay. I walked down the road about an hour ago and could see both towers top 1/4 covered in grey smoke, this was shortly before the collapse I did no see that. I detest George Bush and his father, I consider it a tragedy for the majority of the American people that he got into office. But I am 100% supportive of retaliation by the US and Allies against the organization responsible for this.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But what kind of retaliation?

Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

(apologies for duplication from the previous thread)

As you know, CNN, ABC, and all the other "biggie" websites are down right now, so if you want news online, your best bets are local news websites, international news websites (esp. in foreign languages if you can read them),local radio station websites, and news mirror sites.

If you can get into ANY radio station's live broadcast (it doesn't have to be a news broadcast) connection, you can try changing the url within the broadcast to a bigger news radio channel. (For instance, logging into a local college radio channel and then changing the URL within RealPlayer to a larger news channel.) Good luck. Take care. My thoughts are with anyone who has loved ones in the middle of this. I hope they can be located soon, safe and unharmed.

The rank and file of Americans are not best pleased. My mother is foaming at the mouth, saying that whatever group is responsible, their nationals should be rounded up and sent back from whence they came. I told her that was a bunch of arse and the ugliest thing I had ever heard.

Grrr. Oh, Nick Momus is okay, he checked in.
