this is where stevem and amongst others have brought depictions of south asians in america into the picture, to show a flipside example, though stevem didnt make a particularly convincing case with this

hang on, where did i do this?

this thread on ILX is number 10 in a Google search for "ronaldinho bottle opener".

"Brazil has released a line of unique bottle openers in the shape of Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho.
Since the national hero did not manage to pop open any of the gates of the opposing teams during the World Cup let him now succeed in popping the ordinary bottles – decided the Brazilian producers. Such is their reaction to the fruitless presentation of the soccer champion in Germany.
The new product was widely enjoyed by the local torcideros. Such a funny bottle opener equipped with a pair of Ronaldinho’s famous teeth (which are instrumental in the cap popping process) brought smiles and wiped away the tears of bitter disappointment after the recent failure of the nation’s favorite team."

The only thing it seems to be able to open is a big ol' can of worms, alas.

unfished business, Sunday, 25 March 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

It is (as I suspected) Brazilian, however. Hmmm.

i dont see whats so offensive about a ronaldinho bottle opener. a coconut opener, now that would be racist.

, Monday, 27 August 2007 08:58 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

let us discuss whether the portrayal of Ronaldinho on the Simpsons was as offensive or whatever as the bottle opener:

That's Ronaldo, not Ronaldinho. Probably best not to think all black guys look the same on this thread, Alex.

Just got offed, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

haha my bad. isn't Ronaldinho's real name Ronaldo? I guess I underestimated the odds of there being two black soccer superstars with similiar names and prominent teeth. I mean I'm American, it's not like I know shit about socer.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Ronaldo's real name: Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima
Ronaldinho's real name: Ronaldo de Assís Moreira

Dom Passantino, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

This is Ronaldo Guiaro, who was known as both Ronaldo and Ronaldinho during his career:

In Brazil both Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are known as Ronaldinho, with Ronaldinho being called Ronaldinho Gaúcho (because he's from the south of Brazil were they have all the cattle) to distinguish them.
