i still feel like golf is one of those sports where if enough people had the time to play it and practice it all the time that there would be a TON of legendary golfers. kinda like bowling. whereas, i don't think this is true of other sports. like tennis? or baseball? maybe sports where you have to have amazing hand/eye coordination. seem harder to me. i'm not saying being good at golf is easy its just that so few people ever get a chance to get good at it. but millions of kids play tennis and baseball at high school levels and hardly any of them will ever be good enough to play on a good college team, let alone go pro. i think there would be a tiger woods in every city if enough kids played it all damn day long.

so maybe that's why i don't respect golf that much. but i could be totally wrong. plus, its boring. unless you have some sort of procedure done and you have one of those good doctors who gives you the good pain pills and you are on a couch all day and that sea of green and sand looks like infinity and heaven rolled into a little white ball.

I enjoy the game of golf, but don't really have the means to do it, so I play golf video games from time to time.

i don’t watch or follow golf but my dad did and i associate the sound of a golf game on tv with a certain feeling of home (in a pleasant way). i get being bored by it/not caring about it but it doesn’t rouse strong passions in me either way. mini golf is fun but i’m not very good at it lol

lol fair

not sure i agree, but it's a good question! otoh, we absolutely do not need more people who play it and practice it all the time

mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 02:31 (six months ago) link

Man, I loved playing it, but didn't have any friends who played, and playing alone is not huge fun, and I always had sweat burning my eyeballs, and it's bad for the environment, so I gave it up after 10 years...but I loved playing.

Old school driving ranges (not that Top Golf shit) and mini golf rule

driving ranges and mini golf do indeed rule! so much fun.

idk if any higher % of ppl to swing a club make it pro than any other sport tbh

and if anyone has ever tried to consistently get any good at landing the ball within a dozen yards of a flag 250 yards away i doubt theyd speculate about how easy it is

nb only americans play baseball, really. and tennis seems to me to be /at least/ as middle class barriers to entry as a route

but golf seems to be one of those yank coded things and my island is essentially one large, reasonably-priced golf resort so hey

I’d like golf more if the courses were less manicured and unnatural. Green lawns are enough of an offense to god in half of the US, acres of pristine Saint Augustine are another level.

i usually try to preserve my acidity by self-inserting "in the united states" to an awful lot of posts but look ive made the effort above to actually note the varying relevant contexts and im not sure that our respondents are open

(US open?)

anyway golf is a decent spectator tv sport for a relaxing evening until a good major or the ryder cup when it becomes the pinnacle of sports viewership imo

fwiw (i almost broke 90 once) = same

honestly the most impressive golf performance i've ever seen was by this left-handed dude i knew in university who was compelled to play with right-handed clubs. i mean, he wasn't *good* but by god he got that ball to that hole again and again

mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 07:31 (six months ago) link

went round a nice course- mainly heather and sheep, milo would approve- with a fella once and all he carried was a 3 wood, a nine and a putter and he looked like a dwarf and played like a wizard

I absolutely think golf takes skill and practice, I just hate it and find it completely repulsive. There’s a reason “Chemical Warfare” is among my favorite Dead Kennedys songs.

That said, as a practitioner of a somewhat marginal and weird sport, I totally don’t want to yuck others yum because I know that most people are like “you climb rocks??!”

"as far as making the cut, well, so did vijay, and he's 61. anyway i simply don't need Moments and analysis from Tiger Woods' round about a dude who finished +16"

Tiger has been making the cut for w4 years, a record. I don't know it's impressive in between all the shaghing and car crashing.

But I get you he is not winning another major.

Golf combines a very masculine ish skill of hitting a ball hard with putting which requires something more zen like. Find that combo unique.

Big difference between putting in golf and lobbing in tennis. I've got no idea what that baseball term means.

Baseball does this all the time tbh, this is my favourite example:

analysis of long play as being all about masculine traits would be quickly shut down if were were speaking about tennis or etc imo, its about technique

anyway rock climbings cool id like to do it but my upper body is made of wet communion wafer

Golf does have one thing going for it: it’s a sport where it’s ok to drink and smoke while you play it. How many other sports can say the same? Bowling. That’s really it

My older brother climbs rocks. I dunno. I have dinky forearms for gentle music making. Guitar nails on my right hand. I don’t think I can do it. I want to, my brother loves it, says it’s the best core workout around.

wait, maybe i didn't mean lob = putting. i meant those shots where someone runs up to the ball after some huge smash by their opponent and then they just barely touch the ball and it just barely goes over the net and its impossible to return. i love those. finesse! touch! more than muscle! i like those players who are good at coming up to the net. it shows courage. omg, tennis is WAY harder than golf. tennis is insane. at least on a pro level.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 13:59 (six months ago) link

Finesse touch sure but the tennis players don't spend agonized minutes pacing up and down, trying to work out how best to hit the ball, holding their racket up to work out angles and bevels in the court, asking a ballboy what he thinks, before dinking the ball over the net.

Snooker, though stretching the definition of a “sport”.

golfers only take so long to putt because they are still trying to catch their breath after walking to the hole.

I was on the golf team in high school, and became somewhat proficient despite all my efforts to not take it seriously. Haven't played in years, nay, decades

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 16:42 (six months ago) link

There are many p good reasons to find golf hateable. I love to play though and the one and so far only time I shot under par for 18 holes at my local course is without question the greatest achievement of my life and the 10 minute walk home from the 18th green to my house was the happiest I have ever felt about anything I've ever done in my entire life. I'm p sure I will never be that deliriously happy again.

That said I also remember playing with a couple of friends when I was about 12 and when they committed some etiquette faux pas that I managed to avoid a couple of adult members playing behind us shouted at them pointed to me and called out "don't walk over the green, look even the darkie gets it".
