Maude Adams wasn't strictly a '20s/'30s actress (she was the first actress to play Peter Pan on Broadway in the '00s; she retired in the '10s to work for General Electric, teach drama, and generally have her shit together, but she briefly returned to stage acting in the early '30s), but this is too great a portrait not to share:

i just saw "trouble in paradise" last night and she is just irresistable. her wikipedia entry is very sad -

In 1966 Francis was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, but the cancer had spread and proved fatal. Having no living immediate family members, Francis left over $1,000,000 to a company, Seeing Eye, Inc., which trained guide dogs for the blind.

Glenda Farrell - talked about upthread, but no pictures. First saw her in Hollywood Hotel as the wisecracking secretary and fell in love.

Margaret Dumont circa early 1900s, not quite yet the dowdy dowager of Marx Brothers fame.

Maybe I just missed the mention, but it's legitimately insane that Paulette Goddard wouldn't have shown up here yet.

Caroll Borland was pretty much only in Tod Browning's Mark of the Vampire but every photo/still of her is amazing.

Lilian Bond was a freakin' knockout (she and Gloria Stewart were very crushworthy in The Old Dark House).

man, I spent like a week trying to remember who this was before I realized I'd posted about her. she's still probably the most beautiful person of the past ≈ 200 years
