TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM, although I settle for hurling stuff across the room at him.

Ed, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i could call my publisher right now but i'd get nothing in response but smug disdain and wrongheaded suggestions/directives.

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

hi guys you know what is depressing? midcentury dude literature. john updike is making me sad.

I like pavement just fine, for the record. steve malkmus is a babe.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah he IS pretty cute

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i've kicked his ass (head to head) two years in a row at fantasy football but for the year he always has a better team. that's because ffl stuff is blocked at work so i'm always late with waiver requests or responding to trades and shit.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

L, I hate Updike and his ilk, I had a rant about it on an I Love Books thread once. I'm with you.

Laurel, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

ghost rider, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

wait you play stephen malkmus in fantasy football??

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i like pavement, but my friend M4x (of sh4rks) LOVES them.

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

he would probably blog about it

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

ok moustache.jpg no

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

the thing is, Laurel, I'm very available to hate authors before I've read anything by them, so I've always hated Updike just based on his smarmy lechy new yorker articles. this is my first time reading an updike novel (rabbit run), and now I get why people dig him; it's beautiful and insightful but god. window into Rabbit's mind is so fucking depressing and the sex scenes (which is basically all the book is) are kind of vomit-inducing. I'm going to track down your ILB post, but I suspect I will agree with it.

xpost god what is it with men I objectify growing mustaches to thwart me?! Campbell Scott + Steven Malkmus, you are forbidden to do that shit! and ghost rider, you are mean.

aww

ghost rider, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

updike's essay on ted williams' last game for the red sox goes a long way in preventing me from hating him but yeah, except for rabbit run, he does nothing for me.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

If you read Updike strictly for the prose and not for plot, he's awesome, but all of his books are kind of the same. I used to think his stories were better than his novels, but I haven't read a novel of his in awhile.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't read a novel in a while ;_;

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

his prose is really amazing, it is a shame he's basically a douche

ghost rider, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, Updike's Kerouac parody is very very funny and very OTM. It's called "On The Sidewalk" and is about three year olds.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

although wtf at the stupid hippy girl that asked me what LOLITA was and then got all shocked and grody'd when i gave her the rough plot outline

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

WHO IS DANNIELYNN'S DADDY

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

ok was she like 12 years old because otherwise she sounds retarded

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

well it's fair to get grody'd by the rough plotline of Lolita!!! that she hadn't heard of it is kind of wtfy

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i've been carrying around a fucking book for like a month and haven't even cracked it open, i need to really stop being unable to read.
