do you really not get a hangover with good whiskey?
― Daniel Baboon (brownie), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link
can't say for sure. i didn't feel great on sunday but i wasn't exclusively drinking good whiskey. was mixing w/ wine & rum & cheaper whiskies too
― mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link
don't think i've ever gotten drunk solely off good whiskey to the point that i'd otherwise get a hangover tbh
I have gotten HAMMERED off really expensive whiskey, and yes.
You get hungover as fuck off good whiskey.

Żubrówka is the only liquor that has ever had that magical effect, and i was in my early 20s, so..
Springbank makes some unbelievably good whisky as well

going back to george dickel as i type

also found knob creek sold at around the corner for $29. picked it up, seemed like a good deal and was the last bottle they had. most other places around here are selling it for $38-$40
― mark cl, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:09 (fourteen years ago) link
i've had old overholt out at bars a few times, but never seen it in a store. the only thing i can find regularly is the beam rye, which is very easy to drink.
― ian, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah i was at a nice cocktails place on thurs and they were doing overholt with a couple other elements to make a nice sweetened version. sold me on picking it up for 13 bucks--that was the price at the really expensive liquor store!
― call all destroyer, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:26 (fourteen years ago) link
woah that is expensive for knob! i'm used to it being in the 32-35 range?
tracer, zubrowka, <3!
i just made bulleit + soda. nice revive timing.

what do people think of bulleit bourbon?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/NEW_BULIT_750ML_lo_res.jpg
bought some the other day and tried it last night. thought it was really good. definitely didn't strike me as a soft bourbon, it was even a little harsh. lots of cedar imo. really good and fairly complex.
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link
meant that to be an image, not italics
w/ some friends last night we did a blind tasting of the 4 whiskeys i have: knob creek, bulleit, g. dickel, and old overholt. it was pretty fun! old overholt was pretty clearly the least complex, knob the most. knob won out over the bulleit for the ~$30 range.
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link
big fan of bulleit, when i first found it (living in tucson at the time) it was cheap too

i need to do a blind tasting one of these days.

wooooof old grand-dad was the first whiskey i've ever tried, snuck it from my parents' liquor cabinet when i was 15. shit was gross imo but it has been 11 years since i've tried it
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:43 (fourteen years ago) link
that shit was responsible for me & lots of friends throwing up, many times
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link
give it another try! O G-D was my grandfather's favorite (he lived in kentucky) not as heavy/complex as knob creek et al but v. v. drinkable on the rocks
― m coleman, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link
ok i will
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link
regarding that kind of price range/shelf level i have a friend who swears by old crow. bottle looks like a wild turkey knock-off but i haven't tried it
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 14:02 (fourteen years ago) link
Old Crow is pretty godawful, if memory serves correctly, but my friend and I only really tried it a long time ago.
― mh, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link
yea it looks terrible
― mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 14:13 (fourteen years ago) link
old crow is fine liberally mixed with something else.

Nice. Woodford on the rocks for me, with a little....Pasadena local-grown.
Set up the office much better, so I can work more from home and less from the office. Gonna be a good thing.
BTW - I've known this for over a decade, but whiskey is wonderful. I really need to keep the good run of times with whiskey I've had lately. Gotta respeckt this stuff. Got some punch. 1-2 drinks each, tops. Any more, and the next day is just painful.

Can I informally poll you distilled people?
Is there as much a divide, as I see, between Scotch and bourbon drinkers? I mean, I'm never gonna turn down a glass someone offers me, but I GREATLY prefer bourbon to Scotch. I don't even keep Scotch in the house, despite my acknowledgement of it being a great liquor of the world.
Thoughts?
