So many "I missed the nominations thread," "I missed the voting thread" and "I missed the rollout" posts make me wish for a Tag function, but I could see that being badly abused. Maybe Tagging plus an opt-out.

People who post those things are dilettantes who aren’t online enough and need not be catered to

― sarahell, Sunday, 16 February 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link
Yeah I mean I can find when ppl are mentioning me in threads I’m not in by searching posts for my un and sort by newest first, we already have @ing
― Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Sunday, 16 February 2020 18:26 (four years ago) link
I have to do an * to include both, because sometimes I get mentioned by my old un, but there are a bunch of posters who would have to do multiple searches, and some of them have a variety of long-ass names, so they just get referred to by an acronym, or their first name, or a googleproofed version of a first name ...

I dunno, i threw it out there as an ideal and without concern as to how it would affect the governance and running of things thereafter
if we could fall out over it that would be wonderful, we'd already have our treaty origin story set

In the interests of constantly improving our democracy (& not lagging behind the labour party) I wld like to make the case for polls with preferential votes (i.e. you can number your choices). However much work wld be involved you know it wld be a storming success.

this is already possible. the includes at the top of the file list the urls that this script applies to. replace the wildcards with something more specific (boardid and threadid)

stigmatize necroposting: it confuses newcomers and makes them think ilx is "old" and "inactive" and "irrelevant"
archive all threads that haven't been posted in for over 6 months
repeatedly bumping old threads with posts that add nothing to the conversation ("cool", "haha", "amazing") = yellowcard
bumping old threads to revive past disputes and/or poke fun at other posters = tempban/permaban
let the mods 👮 be the judge of what is or is not a "great revive"

nothing i hate more than forums that fetishise "make a new thread!!!". Great, you have 1000000 threads with six posts in them asking the same question, nice one.

― silby, Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:05 (four years ago) link
(for no good reason really)
i always thought the quality of the necrothreads was one thing that set ILX apart. i do see it as a resource for the future, or an archive
― let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link
Nothing weirder to me than forums where people lose their shit over conversations drifting from thread topic
― Microbes oft teem (wins), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

yeah I love ilx's stance on bumping old threads, the fact that we have people engaging in threads that last decades is great. I don't think we have a great ui for dealing with really long threads, but that's a separate issue.
