Since realising that I have a complete lack of visual memory / imagination (aphantasia) I've come to a very different understanding of how I use instagram - it IS my visual memory, basically. I look at my own pictures far more than I look at other people's. I also appreciate the simplicity of it.

It could be a personal thing, but I think Instagram has developed my visual sense. You start following some things you're really interested in: art galleries, asian and indian antiquities, exotic mediterranean holiday locations, pedigree cats, celebrity crushes etc - and after repeated attempts you start being able instinctively appreciate and critique the visual elements.

I can't really get with the story thing. I had to get someone to show me how they even work a couple of months back (I would've asked my daughters but I don't think I could have dealt with the level of eye-rolling) and I've never posted one. Maybe it's a bit too ephemeral? Or I don't have a story. I just use IG as a semi-social photo archive. The bar is a bit lower than for images I'd post to Flickr and I rarely instantly post from my phone. Also, it's not a public account. I've probably been getting IG wrong for four years now.

i dont do stories but i watch a lot of stories of ppl i followthere is a small trend with a few ppl i follow who turn screen grab of paragraphs of text from news articles/interviews into instagram stories and it needs to STOP put it on insta proper! i can’t read the whole thing in that short amt of time.it’s so stupidalso don’t put up landscape footage bcz it appears sideways, u dummies
― Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 September 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link
you can pause the stories by pressing them; probably easier to read long text that way

omg thxi didnt know that
― Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 September 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link
i didn't know that either -- i just kept wondering how people could expect anyone to read that much text in like 15 seconds

I've got someone who doesn't follow me at all but is constantly watching my stories which is even weirder imo. They're actively checking out my profile every day. :/
― Roz, Monday, 24 September 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link
I would normally consider it creepy behaviour but I know this person irl and it's mostly mystifying why they wouldn't just follow me if they're that interested.

I watch every story when i decide to watch stories
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 24 September 2018 00:09 (five years ago) link
They all play in a row like youtube. A follower watching ur story everyday just means they are watching stories
Problem is the vast majority of stories are just like people walking their dog, or sharing some interesting looking garbage, or some badly lit shaking video of last night’s dinner
― calstars, Monday, 24 September 2018 00:58 (five years ago) link
I started an instagram account to post short clips of myself playing guitar and singing. The only purpose of it is really to gradually get myself over my aversion to singing for people, which is a complicated childhood thing. I'm not playing any shows or recording anything so I have nothing to promote. It's kind of good for that -- I don't have to get a "perfect take" just a good-enough sounding 30 seconds of a song, and I can post it and get instant reassurance that I sound ok. I like using it also to see friends' music and visual art stuff.
That's about all I find it useful for, I find the visual diary aspect boring. In the iphone era everyone takes nice photos of food and picturesque city streets and hiking trails and stuff and it all becomes very samey.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 24 September 2018 01:25 (five years ago) link
My instagram tried to be more eclectic—i use it to document my experience of the city, strange things i notice or stuff i find visually interesting. I love instagram.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 24 September 2018 01:33 (five years ago) link
Yeah I will sometimes throw in stuff like that, in part just so that my account's visual impression isn't just a wall of very similar images of me facing the camera with a guitar.

I'm into posting memes, screen captures of Twitter tweets, album covers of the vinyl I'm currently listening to, screen captures of Facebook posts and my dog, sitting in the exact same position next to my desk as he has in all my insta posts.
Still can't get that protein shake endorsement deal though.

ha! for the time being I am appreciating having a place to share art & some photos and see friends’ art, crafts, & photos without all the other bullshit on fb. ig has its own weird culture though. still I find it less depressing than twitter, tumblr, or fb. tumblr is ghost town, what a sad decline

In a world where people will drive blindfolded into oncoming traffic because of a film they saw this may not top the scale of stupidity. Still, why would anyone want to pay $165 for a creativity workshop by someone who had to pull out of a $500,000 book deal because she couldn't actually write the book? Spoiler: the workshop was a disaster.

what content/meme accounts do y’all like
@puppycodes - not as hi-freq as it used to be but seriously GOAT curation, mix of animal memes and gross-horny
@codependantpapi - bit ‘edgy’ at times but sometimes fucking funny. super hi frequency so u have to be sparing with favs
@erowidexperiencevaults - stories are impeccably curated to give the ‘we live in end times’ vibe

@cottagecheesythighs - a shadow of what it used to be but still reliable architecture lols@bebopdiamonddave - abandoned David lee Roth account from ‘13 - primarily photos of him and Sammy in cabo on cinco de Mayo that year

• Checked "Posts I've Liked" recently, and holy shit. There were thousands of posts that I had never seen, liked by my account.
• Nothing else in my account seemed hacked. Changed everything up (except username) anyway, including password. Likes still getting added.
• Logged off all devices. Likes still getting added.
• I disabled my account for a day or two. Now, that stopped the likes from happening. But once I came back on again, the likes resumed.
These posts are from all over the world, mostly by "influencer" accounts that, again, I've never heard of. If I'm really bored, I copy and paste "This Instagram user buys their likes from hacked accounts!" over and over again. But that solves nothing.
And yes, I've submitted a support request to Instagram. I'll just hold my breath and stand by the mailbox while I wait for their reply.
