i'm sure the sub stuff is done 100% to their best of their ability within time and budget. i took a different screengrab (for save-an-fxteam purposes) where it looks a lot more photoreal.

photoreal as in a photo of a fisherprice depth charge.

if you gotta cherrypick a frame where it doesn't look like shit then guess what it looked like shit
i'm not mad at them for not always having the best fx, it is TV after all, the worst part about that was that the shot wasn't really necessary, i don't think we needed an exterior like that in the scene

whatever, the routine dismissal of effects shots from ppl who know as much about it as they do the fine art of acting or writing just gets tiresomely unconstructive. i didn't have a problem with the sub stuff, the first shot of it moving from the island and into the water was actually great (the music helped).

You don't have to be a special effects expert to know when something looks weird and fake.
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:30 (fifteen years ago) link
you don't have to be an expert on anything to come off like a self-satisfied bore when dismissing visual effects, clearly (this isn't directed at anyone in particular, just sayin - people act incredulous that something which is technically challenging was so unconvincing to them as if it ruined the story or forced them to suspend disbelief even more than the time Juliet failed to smell bacon burning)
― Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago) link
it looked pony to anybody with eyes. layman, child, genius, ILM animator. it looked shit. didn't ruin anything. just looked pony. no more tears.
Now: going back to season1 or 2ish, when Locke saw Smokie for the first time and described it as a bright light... was he seeing the smokie/MiB we know doing its flashy thing, or maybe a Jacoby version? I get the feeling we weren't shown something there for a reason.
Poor JL. Played for a sucker one last, stinging time. Lol.
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link
i don't think of it as looking shit. i think of it as looking reasonable within context. i'm glad they wanted to use and show the sub in action in this way. it doesn't look any shitter than the smokemonster. it's a question of attitude to these things i guess.

goin back to something else, is Ben's compulsive lying so habitual that when Sun asks him what happened to the rest of the statue, he wasn't actually telling the truth (he'd already revealed to Sun how he felt about Locke's revival, eerie new powers etc.)? i'd like to think nothing he's said since returning to the island has been a lie ("I'm a Pisces" just being another dumb joke a la "my mother taught me")...and he surely has nothing to lose by telling Sun the truth re the statue. so her scepticism was understandable and just highlighted his ability to convince anyone of anything has reached a low?
similar thing with Richard telling Sun he watched all the Dharma people (inc. Jin) die. how will this square with The Incident? maybe it was just a figure of speech ("i mean, they all died...i didn't necessarily see it")
― Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link
I think the reason is they were still teasing us at that point, we didn't actually see the monster as a cloud of black smoke until season 2, right? I'm not sure 'Jacob' had even entered the writers' heads at that stage.
― Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link
Well, Smokey was seen as smoke in the S1 finale when it tried to drag Locke into the hole. I can understand what you're saying about them not having finalised their vision of what the monster looked like, but would they really let such a big contradiction slip through the net?I can't really remember the conversation clearly now, but iirc, it's Locke talking to Eko. Locke describes a bright light, and Eko says plainly "that's not what I saw".
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link
Got it: It was in the Eko-Deathisode, The Cost of Living. Season 3!
LOCKE: So, what exactly did you see back there? I saw it once, you know.
EKO: And what did you see?
LOCKE: I saw a very bright light. It was beautiful.
EKO: That is not what I saw.
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe it wasn't really him ;)
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link
the bright light is what locke saw coming out of the hatch, no?
― cutty, Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link
But Locke has seen it as a cloud of smoke as well though, Eko also saw it as Yemi, Shannon as Walt etc. Changing its appearance is part of what it does.
― Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link
I liked that Ben's pleading with Jacob mirrored John's ranting at the Hatch; "I did everything you asked!" etc.
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Thursday, 21 May 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link
Reminds me of something else that puzzled/annoyed me for ages but has probably since been explained and I haven't noticed. When Michael was tapping the numbers into the computer in the hatch, Walt starting MSN-messaging him. Even thought it wasn't meant to be connected up to anything other than whatever it was connected to (incident-preventing device, presumably) - though I can't remember how they established this. How on earth was Walt chatting to Mike that time? Esp if Walt was under constant Other surveillance and testing and that. Was it ever meant to be Walt or an Other playing a trick?

xpost that wasn't Walt it was the Others communicating from er the Arrow I think? although tbh I can't remember where I got that idea from, probably lostpedia or something, so pinch of salt

smokey ran his bright light scanner-y thing over juliet and kate that one time. when they were handcuffed together? so maybe that's just a different mode or something.
also he told me that juliet was the hotter of the two.
