That was Variety's headline about 1942's "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

Reminds me of a review of actor (I think) Guido Nadso. It read: "Guido Nadzo was nadzo guido."

four years pass...

Martin Gardner died last weekend, aged 95. He wrote the original "Fish and and, and and and "And"..." sentence, using "and" 21 times in a row. The Language Log thread comments include an expansion of that sentence to "and" 71 times in a row.

First time I came across the Buffalo buffalo was on this thread. Took me a solid 20 minutes. The Cockney with the Hand and Androgynous Goat example is brilliant.

Imagine if that person was standing in an echo chamber.

What would it sound like he was saying?

If you like fish, fish fish. Fish fish fish too.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 22 October 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

If you like fish, fish fish. Fish fish fish. Fish fish other things too.

I just bashed my elbow. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

who knows how many times I've spent a few minutes trying to parse the buffalo and failing.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

and by a few I mean many. Many many many many.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

Think of "Buffalo buffalo buffalo" as "Chicago bash bisons".

Chicago bash bisons bash Chicago bash bisons.
Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

that's wrong lol

Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

buffalo doesn't even look like a real word now :(

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

try this:

Mice cats chase eat cheese. (Mice, that are chased by cats, eat cheese.)

Dogs dogs dog dog dogs. (Dogs, that are dogged by dogs, dog other dogs)

Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo. (Buffalo, that are buffaloed by buffalo, buffalo other buffalo.)

then add the extra Buffalo-NY

Buffalo-NY buffalo, Buffalo-NY buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo-NY buffalo

and so

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

i've just gone a bit mental

ledge, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

I love that post so much

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

YESSSSSSSSSSSS. I am sorry I've had to break two of you to reach this exalted state, I hope it's been worth it for you.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

if we could change the binomial name of the buffalo from bison bison to buffalo buffalo we could probably construct a sentence that works as a mental weapon of mass destruction.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

i am slowly recovering. (can't make sense of onimo's, it should be 'chicago bisons chicago bisons bash bash chicago bisons'?)

enough.

xp ha!

ledge, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo mozarella.

Mark G, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

wait I think that's one too many

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

oh no that's right, never mind

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

One guy from wet Wet Wet Wet wet wet Wet Wet Wet wet through.

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

Mine is completely different from ledge's despite having the same words :/

A bison from Chicago that has a tendency to bash is a Chicago bash bison. Sometimes they bash each other. Therefore Chicago bash bison bash Chicago bash bison.

Now I can't understand Ledge's, and I did a minute ago.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

There's a river in Namibia called "Fish". Its fish are Fish fish.

If you like Fish fish, fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish other things too.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

If you like to fish Fish fish, fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish other things too.

Tilting at Bushmills (onimo), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

If you like to fish Fish fish, fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish Fish fish. Phish fish Fish fish. Fish fish fish Phish. Fish fish fish other things too.

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

I have tried to work out and explain and expand upon the ands and kens and buffalo in the pub when drunk. It's never gone well. Needless to say, I love this thread.

ailsa, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Did Fish from Marillion own any fish?

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Fish didn't like to fish.

Mark G, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

fish Fish fish fish fish fish fish Fish fish fish Fish fish?

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

(just kidding, although if anyone would like to try parsing it anyway, knock yrself out.)

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

So, the singer Fish from Marillion, who didn't like to fish, decided to fish anyway, but just to prove he had, would take pictures of the fish that he had fished for onto microfiche format (which is spelled mikrofish in Hungarian, or fish for short).
