man y'all touchy bout some tv!

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought the plane would "mean something" coz it was a bit like the plane from nigeria rite. still holding out tbh.

for the first tiem i haven't been able to keep track of what matters in the show. there hasn't been a strong arc. and so far as i can tell the show has rested a lot more on "the island wanted it to happen" than ever before. maybe that was inevitable as they began breaking out explanations. but i didn't want "fate" to be the explanation, and that's what seems to be happening...

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i agree that it's gotten harder to differentiate between actual THIS IS IMPORTANT moments and random red herrings/distractions/one-off stories, but i don't mind as much. if they need to clutter things up a bit just so that all signs don't point to one big obvious conclusion everyone will see coming a mile a way, then it's for the greater good.

Briney Deep Coralgarden (some dude), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i've had enough of the 'hint of something at this point but then no follow up on it until many many MANY episodes later' technique.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno if this is just a trend in sci-fi way more than anything else (obv happened in BSG, happens to an extent in Dr Who) or not

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link

save that for your livejournal dude

I was going to put it in my Geronimo Jackson 33 1/3 book!

i kind of like the way there are so many threads that are left dormant for ages and then picked up again when you least expect it. ideally for me, every episode of Season 6 would come back to some small nagging question from the first couple seasons and answer it, just to satisfy whatever small percentage of viewers care about it and to prove that they're not completely screwing with us. xpost

Same for me too - I was so so psyched for this season, and it started out brilliantly. I know there's a whole season left but I was hoping they might tie up a few things.. actually, it's not even that, it's more that unexplained mysterious shit is happening ALL the time now - not only does it feel less important each time but it has started me doubting whether it will be all tightly wound together at the end. More than ever it seems like they're making it up as they go along, and when you think about what's actually happening plot-wise it seems a shame that all this crazy stuff is frustrating me rather than making me psyched for some super explanatory story for it all.

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:31 (fifteen years ago) link

the problem is that a lot of those small hints relate to just one or two particular characters and it gets tough to follow up on them because of the character-centric structure of every episode. doesn't help that every major character has their own convoluted arc that need resolution, separate and in addition to the bigger story that they all share.

Roz, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

one thing i'd really want for s06 is the whole thread they have dropped: all the pre-2004 coincidinks: sayid meeting that guy in iraq, etc. was it because ben remembered sayid from 1977 and was keeping an eye on him? iow "the list" i guess, though iirc there were links between non-list people too. in fact, was sayid even on the list?

i liked it when they were back in the world, sun working for widmore and stuff. but i've totally lost where that went.

we need more of "i'll capture two and kill the rest".

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

My vote for what is in Illana's box--Alvar Hanso's body. He wanted to be resurrected on the island.

Oh that's good.. Have we seen Widmore off-island since the Ajira flight?

Carl Magnusssen (petey_carnum), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

yes. met up with eloise outside desmond's hospital.

Roz, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link

He got slapped didn't he?

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

same night as the flight that was.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago) link

That guy Sayid met in Iraq was a Dharma dude, not an Other, so it's kind of doubtful. I think those coincidences might have been them doing flashy Ghostwritten type shit for the sake of it (see also Charlie saving Nadia, Kate and Cassidy etc).

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah -- i have no problem with all the random convenient serendipity in the show whether or not it's explained in a way beyond "it's destiny!" or not, it makes watching and connecting the dots a little more fun. i do have a problem with, say, Kate not seeming to find it mindblowing or even particularly interesting that Sawyer's baby mama is someone she used to kick it with, though.

some dude, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

The vast chasm between how people on the show act vs. how any normal person would act always drives me nuts.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i think they should write an episode next season where every line is either a very good question or a very helpful answer.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link

and have all of them voiced by Ben, so you still have no idea whether to believe him.

yeah i was thinking we should get a scene where ben hires kelvin/clancy brown post-dharma to train sayid to be the kind of dude who would shoot a 12yr old in the heart....is this what you meant?

mermaphrodite (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

oh also claire's psychic!

i've always kind of wondered if charlie and desmond really had met on the street like that; it's not important or even that interesting but wtf it stuck with me as a symbol of how maybe the timeline can be changed?

mermaphrodite (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

fnding out this season why they were building the runway instilled hell of hope that they will bring each piece back in and make it fit. but that'll be a lot of work in s6, and i thought they'd do more of it this season. still holding out for more info on the dharma drops, that's my need-to-know

FLAKEY JAKES (jergins), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

My feeling about all the coincidences (Charlie saves Nadia, etc.) was that they were mostly just supposed to be cool, look at how many times these characters' paths intersected without them knowing it- type stuff, and partly little threads that the writers could pick up on later if they wanted to show how destiny brought everyone together.

President Keyes, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

the runway thing still does my head in.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

they knew...how?

FLAKEY JAKES (jergins), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

someone explain the runway thing to me?

cutty, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, the show's far more about destiny than conspiracy. 95% of those "unanswered questions" on Lostpedia will go down as "destiny". Characters like Kelvin Inman are total afterthoughts by now - it's amazing that they even gave us a little on this, like turning Radzinsky into a full character.

In Season 3 when Ben kidnapped Jack, Kate and Sawyer he had them busting rocks - later this was revealed by Juliet to be working on a runway, though she didn't know herself what the purpose of it was. Two seasons later, that's exactly where the Ajira flight landed. This actually IS one of those details I think they roughly planned out for, since that detail about the runway was said in the second half of season 3, after they had an end point set for the show.

Nhex, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

One of the things that's been bugging me more and more throughout this series is how Widmore and Ellie knew to guide Desmond to the Island - maybe we'll find that bit out in the finale. It's possible Desmond's already fulfilled his Island destiny and the deal is the remaining characters still have their 'button pushing' purpose to come.

The O6 themselves and presumably Jin have to have a major part still to play in this, otherwise would be the point of bringing them back to the Island (or in Jin's case allowing him to survive and exploding freighter).

Presumably the fertility stuff will come back in at some point? One other thread is that seemingly everyone that was born on the Island ends up dying on the Island - Ethan, Alex, Charlotte, Faraday. Form book looks pretty fucking grim for Miles.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit I've just realised, the Island is trying to destroy itself, the Others have got it totally wrong. It all fits in - babies dying, hatches imploding, Locke trying to kill Jacob.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty amazingly no spoilers on the net as of yet

cutty, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

They've probably filmed six different endings.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

All of which actually happened...

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

My personal theory is that the island is trying to kill Jacob.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Now I'm thinking the Shadow of the Statue people also have a nuclear bomb and the show will end with two detonations (which will cancel each other out--though we'll have to wait until 2010 to find that out.)

President Keyes, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago) link

With the series end coming next year, many questions still remain. What will you look for during this 3-hour event?

:o

Anyone else ever watch interviews with Carlton and Damon? They're actually pretty funny dudes, in a geeky way. Always enjoyable.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 09:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah darlton are great and always seem really on the ball when it comes how people respond to the show.

any guesses who's gonna die? i'm hoping it's not juliet but she's wearing a conspicuously red shirt. :/

Roz, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I was thinking Locke or Ben.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't think locke will die - his whole arc is tied to jack's as much as the island's. i hope it isn't ben either.

Roz, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:25 (fifteen years ago) link

i still think it could be Sawyer

some dude, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 13:00 (fifteen years ago) link

i will be shocked if it's not sayid.

Carl Magnusssen (petey_carnum), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 13:11 (fifteen years ago) link

any guesses who's gonna die?

JACOB

can't believe they'd bring the kate-jack-sawyer-juliet love quadrangle to an end.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago) link

ending with locke dying AGAIN would be ridic.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 13:17 (fifteen years ago) link

haha yeah I was gonna say. he's already dead!

dmr, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago) link

true, but they've gotta reveal something about what happened to him, and it might involve him still being dead. probably won't involve him going away and not being in S6, though.
