i love that whole Hurley theory, thanks for posting that. that's exactly the kind of thing i meant when i said i wanna see character-related mysteries resolved in satisfying ways, something that could tie all those little seemingly insignificant details about someone like Hurley into some firm concept.

Briney Deep Coralgarden (some dude), Friday, 8 May 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

they really played up Phil's nastiness this ep. "The FAT guy!"

Juliet will probably shoot him.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 8 May 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Hurley's been important at least since he saw Jacob's cabin. Also, his 316/Guitar case flashback is the only one that's been saved for the finale, so it must be kind of important.

I wonder if we'll have two parallel Jacob storylines next week-- with Locke/Ben/Alpert seeking him in '08 and Hurley/Miles/? finding him in '77.

President Keyes, Friday, 8 May 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I would love that (xp to some dude). Stuff like that, and the smoke monster. I know there are other really important stuff but that thing became like a personal line in the sand or something for me. It is my desire.

Egypt is the magic number.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Friday, 8 May 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i hope we don't end up with a 'much of what you saw of the island in the past didn't really happen' outcome e.g. things like Widmore's exile from the island, the actual Dharma Purge etc. being wiped.

some characters listed for the finale we haven't seen in quite a while i notice (but you'd expect that really).

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 8 May 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I really hope we get another Hurley episode that focuses on the mysterious side of his story (numbers, visions etc) rather than the goofy and sentimental side we've had for the last couple of seasons. You'd expect the Hurley ep in S6 to finally answer the Numbers question but this being Lost I dunno.

VERY VERY MILD SPOILER:

Apparently the season finale features a young Tom.

Is Arturro involved?

Local Garda, Friday, 8 May 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

that is mild, but please i beg you, no more spoilers until after it airs

btw why didn't they just take James to that guy with the drugs to get him to talk like they did Sayid?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 8 May 2009 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Cuz Radzinsky and Phil wanted to get their rocks off.

President Keyes, Friday, 8 May 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Cuz there was no way to make it as funny a 2nd time as it was w/ Sayid

At least since the first few eps of the season for sure.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Saturday, 9 May 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought this ep was ropey enough to be honest. I enjoyed it but I think I'm at a stage now where I would watch and enjoy no matter how much part of me was thinking "this is crap".

At the moment the story feels extremely loose, like odds and ends everywhere and not the usual focus you have at the end of a season. Always was a risk when you start revealing stuff though, the hardest part of any mystery.

Local Garda, Saturday, 9 May 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Back when I first saw season 1 I remember telling people I had no idea if it was actually a 'good' show, I was incapable of watching critically. There's still some truth to that.

^imo the thing that makes the show work

ice cr?m, Saturday, 9 May 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

ya... i wasn't so into this episode and i feel like they've been trying to shock us with some pretty so-so stuff lately (like how every time whatsherface is mentioend as faraday's mother they make it seem like a big reveal... or the locke time loop which was just lame).. but they've never not really delivered for a finale.

s1ocki, Saturday, 9 May 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

this season on the whole has felt a bit patchy but it also feels like it might be the strongest one just going from episode to episode. i think it'd flow really well if someone was watching this back-to-back on DVD.

Roz, Saturday, 9 May 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

start of the season was great as far as I recall. it's a very mixed season thematically though...

Local Garda, Saturday, 9 May 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago) link

s 1 - castaways
s 2 - hatch
s 3 - others
s 4 - freighter
s 5 - time?

Roz, Saturday, 9 May 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

how is the "locke time loop" lame? that a character is revealed to be possibly manufacturing his own future is lame?

mikebee (BATTAGS), Saturday, 9 May 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

ya exactly

s1ocki, Saturday, 9 May 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link

the entire plot device of dropping them into different times makes more sense now though, they definitely were not randomly being sent places, i think the island was putting them where they needed to be in the island's history to "fix" or "save" whatever is going to happen in season 6

cutty, Saturday, 9 May 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know if i go for the purposefullness of it but that sounds intriguing.

xpost though i think Locke turning out to have fulfilled his own prophecies is AWESOME, one of the best aspects of S5! just like how jumping around and ending up in the 50's, lock approaches the others' camp telling richard that jacob sent him and that he's their leader in 50 years, so that in 50 years richard automatically recognizes him as the leader...that's not lame, that's fantastic!

mikebee (BATTAGS), Saturday, 9 May 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

and then it turns out that locke becoming leader might in fact be a total mistake?

Roz, Saturday, 9 May 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 9 May 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

no no no, there's a reason he was brought back to life and there is reason he is doing what he is doing.

cutty, Saturday, 9 May 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

it's no mistake. the island brought him back to life from the dead and gave him all this knowledge - it's definitely all for a reason. is "the island" actually good or evil, well, i guess we'll find out next year!

Nhex, Saturday, 9 May 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

― Roz, Sunday, May 10, 2009 8:52 AM (8 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

No I think there really might be something to this. It feels like the show's building to a reveal w/ the Others's relationship to the Island. It's a mistake from the viewpoint of Ben or Richard.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Sunday, 10 May 2009 05:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Y'know, maybe.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Sunday, 10 May 2009 05:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I like the idea that Locke saying he wants to 'kill Jacob' is a little like saying 'kill the Buddha', meaning that blind obedience to Jacob (or the idea of Jacob) is mistaken, and Locke wants to show the Others that Jacob's a paper tiger rather than murder anyone.

Can't square the Richard who hands Locke the Sawyer file, telling him the Others are ready for leadership that elevates their mission, and the Richard that seems unsure and confused by Locke's actions. For such a (mythologically) central character, he's completely opaque, I have no idea what his deal is. As an immortal consigliere, he's impartial, but he also has really strong opinions about what can't or shouldn't be done.

Loving the show suggesting that Locke engineered his own installation as leader. It's a little like the compass - where did it come from originally? The idea of Locke as leader - where did that come from? From Locke's own need to find a purpose in life. The compass is an idea that is looking for a means of expression, the same as the idea of Locke as leader of men.

Reading back over this post it seems really overwrought but one of the things I love about the show is following these little philosophical threads.

It's strange that not that long ago the Others were a bunch of mysterious and terrifying jungle ninjas and now they're a bunch of cannon-fodder extras standing on a beach waiting to be told where to go.

when Richard told Sun he watched them all die, was that a memory that had only recently been inserted, something he'd always remembered or (unlikely) just a lie?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 10 May 2009 11:34 (fifteen years ago) link

also thinking Bram and Ilana's people must've engineered the Ajira flight to a fair extent. not sure if this includes making sure Frank was the pilot and pulling strings to get ALL of the O6 (- Aaron + Ben) on board. looking fwd to whatever new thing we see being set up for final season but seems likely to involve them?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 10 May 2009 11:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a feeling this translates into 'I watched them all walk into the Swan which blew up moments later'. No chance are all the show leads going to be eliminated before the end of the show.

also thinking Bram and Ilana's people must've engineered the Ajira flight to a fair extent.

It's odd to off Caesar just as we were starting to wonder what his agenda was.

Brakhage, Sunday, 10 May 2009 12:13 (fifteen years ago) link

xp well Richard did watch them all die in the purge, pehaps he just didn't single out the oceanic six in the photo? it seems he doesn't have any greater knowledge of who is who, except Locke obviously.

Way back (S3?) he gave Locke that file on Sawyer which makes me think he probably had access to the rest.
