"Bill Clinton managed to run the country on a nightly allotment of five or six hours. Slick Willy had a penchant for staying up until the wee hours and it was not uncommon for him to rouse a staffer with whom he could burn the midnight oil.

Unsurprisingly, another well-known insomniac, was Abraham Lincoln (the Civil War will do that). And President Obama counts himself among the night owls, relying on a 7a.m. wake up call to get his day started."

I feel like Trump threatening to pull out of the Paris accord is more or less just a cry for attention. He doesn't give a fuck one way or the other about the issue, much less understand it. But he does love suddenly having CEOs calling him up desperate to talk to him, everybody pleading w him, people fighting for his attention/jockeying for position to "influence" him. He lives for this.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link

you're probably right

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:44 (seven years ago) link

Honestly this might be his last 'good' stretch of days in office. If all is as assumed with Comey's testimony per today's report, then after that...

Why is Betsy Klein specifically plugging birchbox when there are dozens, if not hundreds, of monthly 'box of crap shipped to you monthly' subscription services out there (as chronicled in this thread?

birchbox is the biggest one. it's targeted at women so you wouldn't know it though.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:47 (seven years ago) link

which is why...I kinda thought he wouldn't pull out? you would think that pulling out of a climate pact is the sort of massively unpopular, no-upside move that his lizard brain would know to avoid. and I don't see it benefitting his own businesses any.

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:49 (seven years ago) link

Trump is motivated by equal parts flattery and pissing off people he doesn't respect (which, ultimately, is everyone).

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:51 (seven years ago) link

The Paris pullout is a Bannon thing; he craves libtears.

And he sees an opening to defeat Kamp Kushner, which has a cloud over its head and which advised against this move.

leprechaundriac (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:52 (seven years ago) link

the only people who don't like it are ignorant troglodytes and coal companies and yeah, they are a minority. even ExxonMobil's shareholders want it.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:53 (seven years ago) link

yeah the only constituency for withdrawing from paris are his idiot base, who will go along with whatever he tells them..

pulling out of the climate pact is NOT massively unpopular with his base

there's a certain irony that the former CEO of exxon mobil is advocating against pulling out

"there's a certain irony that the former CEO of exxon mobil is advocating against pulling out" they are thinking the deal sucks anyway so it looks great for them to pretend to want it

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 19:06 (seven years ago) link

I can imagine some part of Spicer is very happy to be saying "Gotta talk to the lawyers." And that the lawyers will now be awake 24-7.

Violet Jax (Violet Jynx), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 19:12 (seven years ago) link

They're going to use taxpayer money to pay for them, I don't see why he'd even try to stiff them.

I feel like any self-aware person getting involved with Trump in any fashion would be well-advised to put an attorney on retainer pretty much immediately.
