That everyone would die isn't really the purpose of detonating the hydrogen bomb, it's just incidental. I'm guessing that's why he urged Myles' dad to evacuate the island. I think the idea is that in detonating the bomb The Incident is prevented/negated (I'm not sure there's science mumbo jumbo here, just KABLOOEY), which means no button, which means 815 never crashes. Also, if what Desmond did was detonated an H-bomb (which=atom bomb X 1000 or something?) I'd be seriously WTFing that everybody on the beach (and probably the rest of the island?) survived.

OTM re: sharkjumping. But I'm pretty sure they're not gonna blow up the island that the entire show is based on.

ya then they'd have to change the name of the show to just "lost"!

i thought it was a bit silly that Chang was so quick to dismiss Daniel's story considering he is already intent on manipulating time himself so has surely envisaged a situation where he might travel back in time himself and tell someone he's from the future. presumably he will soon accept that Miles is his son anyway.

I thought that, too, blueski. But guessed we're just meant to go "he is being an asshole which is in character".

one thing is puzzling me right now. in "Jughead", during 1954, after the flaming arrow attack, Ellie takes Miles, Daniel, etc. prisoner. She then says directly to Daniel "you just couldn't stay away, could you?" was this a fake-out? does she think he's US Army at this point, hence her reference? or did she meet him at some point even earlier that we haven't seen yet?

It's not clear if she remembers the 1954 meeting in '77 but I would imagine she does.

I'd still like to figure out where that video that was shown at Comic Con fits into this - the one where Pierre has spoken to Daniel (you can hear his voice in the background!) and is saying "I know that there is going to be an incident, btw Daniel also mentioned the internet and other neat stuff from the future" because he quite clearly didn't manage to convince Chang before he "died." One could argue that that indicates Daniel *did* change the past, but then, most of Lost's viewers didn't see the Comic Con video anyway :P

yeah i don't think that video really means anything - all that extra stuff are more promotional than canon.

Also, I think it was Miles behind the camera, not Daniel. Especially now Daniel's dead.

maybe Island will heal Daniel, Locke-style, and make him speak less breathily.

blueski: Chang (and Daniel originally) seem to have this pretty clear cut theory about time, that it cannot be changed, and past events are set in stone (and it feels like the show is going to stick with this). So why would anyone travel to the past to try to change it? Then again it's not really clear at all why Chang/Dharma are there besides ominous "research", we don't know if they ever had a specific goal in researching the island - eternal life, manipulating space and time for transport, who knows...

Daniel's probably dead but we've still got three hours left in the season, so we'll see...

sleeve: I think it was just a viewer fakeout - in the episode itself it's clear Ellie/the Others believed they were more US army forces from the same group was doing the H-bomb testing. Maybe she remembers him, maybe not, but she only saw him for a few hours over 20 years in the past, so it's quite possible she (or even Alpert) doesn't remember him.

JimD: Sounds right, didn't think about that it could be Miles.

we know Chang is trying to harness the electro-magnetic power to control time, as he said to the random drill guy. if he believes time can't be changed (not sure where you got this from) what does he want with the time-controllable powers?

He says it in that scene! Pierre lectures one of the construction crew at The Swan about how laws cannot be broken and time can't be changed - this was in response to the guy asking if they could go back in time and kill Hitler.

So what does he want with time powers, or how can he manipulate time if history can't be changed? The only possibility I can think of is by gleaming information from the future of "past events" the way Widmore/Ben/Eloise have, but even then what's the point, since they know they can't change history either?

I'm trying to remember what an atomic bomb was doing just sitting in the middle of the island in the first place.

I don't know that they explained it exactly but the hostiles seemed concerned, it was implied to have been left by the US Armed Forces that had been on the island..

So the next episode is Follow The Leader - hopefully this means we finally get to see Locke in 2007 hanging as King Other.

FFM, that seems right. I would guess secret testing of their new weapon? Island is remote, almost no one knows it exists, and say if you do it's nearly impossible to find. Were their motives discussed at all?

Some good ideas re: Chang's motives. I still wonder how much the Dharma really know about island, what that might reveal about their work there. Or maybe it's purely in the interest of science...

Am I right in thinking that after tonight, there's another one week week break before the double length finale?

Oh wait, I might be confused - Lostpedia is showing another recap episode between eps 15 and 16, but I guess that might just mean there are three in a row next week.

I believe there's the new ep tonight, then next week is a 2-hour finale, no break.

Re: Jughead, the US did nuclear warhead testing on islands all the time in that era, it's quite conceivable that they stumbled on a remote uncharted island and figured it was uninhabited, then tried to use it as a test site.

i just finally caught up with all the aired episodes last night (after watching the first 3 seasons all in January) and finished reading this whole thread and am all ready to watch the show at the same time as everybody else for the first time this week and next week and....i have nothing to add to this thread really.

except that it bugs me so much when most of you guys seem to continually just assume that Ben meeting people as a kid means now he'll remember them as an adult and would 'recognize' Sayid, which seems to me like not what they're going for at all. but i guess we'll see if that's the case or not.

well Richard did say "he won't remember anything" when his innocence was lost... I am still kind of unsure about how Rousseau forgot that she once met a Korean on the island who just disappeared on her!

yeah..the Alpert handwaving thing is lame, but i'm just saying even before that, all the "Ben's a dick to these people in the future because they were mean to him as a kid!" type speculation raises my hackles. maybe i just want the show's time travel to not work that way, though, i have no idea if it will.

the only extent I'm willing to pursue that thread is the infamous "list" in s3 that had Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Hurley on it.. I like that at the time, Sayid, Jin & Sun were together in that little boat.. I feel like maybe the "new" characters (Juliette, Miles) are going to die and the "list" will be of people who survive/become known as past Dharma members, possibly with Sayid & Jin working together looking for Sun. I'm not explaining this well. I just hope the list ends up being more relevant than Hurley as messenger & Jack-Sawyer-Kate as love triangle. Remember how much they used to push it - "he's not on the list!" etc?

too many lists! I confused ben's list with jacob's list obviously. did we ever hear of any names that *were* on jacob's list? Claire perhaps? We're running out of characters still "alive" who could have been on it, unless the list is Hurley, Rose and Bernard

yeah...i found that when i was trying to remember if that list was the same as Jacob's list.

really the whole Jacob thing is what nags at me most at this point, and Christian/Claire/cabin stuff in general. i hope the Alpert episode at least has something to do with Jacob.

I feel pretty confident they're going to address that stuff in the final season, especially since (I think) Claire is coming back.

The Jacob lists were one thing - most notably used to decide who would be kidnapped from the tail section to inducted into the Others, this is really where the "good" and "bad" people were separated. These are the significant lists that have to be addressed at some point, since the whole Others kidnapping people angle is an important thread from all the way back in Season 1 that hasn't been addressed (besides Ben's obsession with pregnant women, which also hasn't clearly been explained - still think they're saving that one).

Ben's list of Jack/Kate/Hurley/Sawyer was likely just a plot device. There a lot of lists used, but they're not all for same purpose, it's a thematic tie more than a literal one.

i thought the phenomenon of pregnant women on the island all dying explained that to my satisfaction (although the phenomenon itself hasn't been totally explained yet)

So present-day Widmore & Eloise obviously manipulated certain people (Locke, Faraday & the O6 especially, but also Miles, Charlotte) because they met them on the island or knew that they were in the DI back in the day, but how did they find out about Desmond? I think he must show up in the past at some point. I hope it's not some dumb thing like Jack detonates the H-Bomb and the Island summons Desmond to 1977 so he can course correct.

On an island where cripples have been magically walking again since the very start I'm not sure why you'd complain about one extra bit of handwaving magic.

there is presumably a unifying explanation behind the magic island healing pixie dust but doesn't look like there will be one for "he won't remember you" other than "for the purposes of moving the story along, we can't have him remember you" but there's always hoping.
