"Laughing up their sleeves." Have you heard that expression used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just… I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good. It’s what you have to do.

PRESIDENT STEAMPUNK J. BRAINSTEM (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 11 May 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link

“I don’t watch CNN. I don’t watch MSNBC. Scarborough used to treat me great. But because I don’t do interviews and stuff and want to … He went the other way. Which is fine. He’s got some problems. But I don’t watch the show anymore. It drives him crazy. I don’t watch the show. I do watch Fox in the morning, and their ratings have gone through the roof because everyone knows I’m watching Fox. But they’re pleasant. And if I do something wrong they report on it. I don’t mean they – if I do something wrong. But it’s really, honestly it’s the most accurate.

“CNN in the morning, Chris Cuomo, he’s sitting there like a chained lunatic. He’s like a boiler ready to explode, the level of hatred. And the entire, you know the entire CNN platform is that way. This Don Lemon who’s perhaps the dumbest person in broadcasting, Don Lemon at night it’s like – sometimes they’ll have a guest who by mistake will say something good. And they’ll start screaming, we’re going to commercial. They cut him off. Remember?

“I’ve seen things where by mistake somebody they bring in a guest and it turns out to be a positive. And they go, I mean they get just killed. The level of hatred. And poor Jeffrey Lord. I love Jeffrey Lord. But sometimes he’s sitting there with eight unknown killers that nobody ever heard of. And CNN actually is not doing nearly as well as others. They’re all doing well because of me. But it’s not doing as well as others that are doing better actually. But Fox treats me very fairly. MSNBC is ridiculous. It’s just bad.

“It’s an ability I never thought I’d have. I never thought I’d have the ability to say, they’re doing a big story on me on CNN and I won’t watch it. And it’s amazing, it doesn’t matter. But it really, the equilibrium is much better. As far as newspapers and things, I glance at them. They’re really dishonest. I mean they’re really dishonest.”

http://www.pbs.org/weta/washingtonweek/blog-post/three-things-watch-friday

Ends with:

Republicans, already a little uneasy about the 2018 mid-term elections, are telling me privately that Trump is reviving questions on Russia they thought would abate and making it tough for them to defend him when the narrative coming out of the White House is challenged daily.

We’ll delve into how Speaker Ryan and Leader McConnell are going to adjust to Comey moving forward and what kind of guidance they’re giving their members. The chorus so far is in Trump’s favor but that doesn’t mean the grumbling in the cloakroom isn’t growing and becoming a real problem for the president as he tries to get his party in line behind him.

Fairly obvious already but a useful underscore. Still early days.

Apparently Trump has been dissuaded from his plan to give one of his masturbatory speeches at FBI headquarters tomorrow, because he could not be guaranteed a positive reception.

As much as I want to believe this FBI raid is Russia related its easier to assume its about this:

Rogers said agents appeared interested in his firm’s work on former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli’s 2013 gubernatorial campaign. Cuccinelli (R) sued the Strategic Campaign Group and the Conservative Strike Force in 2014, alleging they raised almost $2.2 million to support his campaign but steered little of that money to him.

One aspect of the firing I don't get: are Presidents allowed to fire people like Comey for things that happened under a previous administration?

syzygy stardust (suzy), Thursday, 11 May 2017 23:37 (seven years ago) link

No rationale is required.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 11 May 2017 23:39 (seven years ago) link

He can fire him for whatever he likes, or no reason.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 23:40 (seven years ago) link

in the past it never really came up because the idea that a President would transparently fire a sitting FBI Director in order to stymie an ongoing investigation was assumed to be something only an idiot would do

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 11 May 2017 23:48 (seven years ago) link

One reason he may not be able to fire is if it is explicitly done to obstruct an ongoing investigation of which the president is a target.

Moodles, Thursday, 11 May 2017 23:50 (seven years ago) link

That just happened.

Οὖτις, Friday, 12 May 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

yes, it is quite possibly an obstruction of justice and it seems like he has unwittingly admitted to it

This constant firing befuddles me as well. Do the people fired *for no particular, lawful reason* not get a sack of cash out on the way? Are there no rights for employees whatsoever? In The Netherlands it couldn't be done; not without the fire-ee leaving with a boatload of cash toughly negotiated in court. But we're prob a marxist country compared to the usa by this point (good luck etc).
