Surely what they need is words of wisdom from John Boehner.

If Boehner and Obama were somewhere on the beach right now sharing beers, I wouldn't be surprised.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:02 (seven years ago) link

I'd be surprised if Boehner was willing to share

ohn Bolton just walked into the West Wing -- I asked him what he was doing, he smiled and said 'health care!!!!'

no fucking way

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:13 (seven years ago) link

I am pretty certain Boehner is off somewhere still singing "Zip-a-dee Doo Dah"

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:15 (seven years ago) link

C'mon Alfred, you could totally see this White House nominating him for Surgeon General.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link

can I just

"Mr. Bolton, what are you doing here today?"
"Health care!!!!"
"... You're 'doing' health care? What does that mean?"
"HEALTH CARE!!!!"
"Mr. Bolton, put your pants back on!"
"HEALTH! CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

Apparently the mustache wasn't waxed enough:

Freedom Caucus members streaming out of WH now. All say no deal made, no "firm" changes agreed to.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

'Moist' and 'soft' changes, however.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

And a one-two:

https://twitter.com/pdmcleod/status/844957873482448896

Some news! Rep. Rowe says they're looking at stripping essential health benefits from individual market only. That's about 6% of total

https://twitter.com/_Drew_McCoy_/status/844958783780597760

This idea will have a shelf life of about 45 minutes once the US Chamber gets wind of it.

why does bannon hate ryan? just too prominent?

Why does that old man hate that cloud?

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:20 (seven years ago) link

man I hope Ryan goes down in flames on this

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:22 (seven years ago) link

You and Steve Bannon!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:22 (seven years ago) link

Thing is, having said that: I can't imagine this is exactly the way Bannon would want Ryan out, if only because of all the self-owning Trump's doing otherwise, even with his half-hearted 'yeah gotta pass something' attitude. It doesn't make the White House look stronger, it makes them all look ridiculous.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:24 (seven years ago) link

Didn't rumors float out that Bannon was against the health care plan after seeing some backlash?

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:26 (seven years ago) link

Starting to wonder if Ryan knew this would go down all along, which is why they seem to have spent about two hours writing the bill

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:29 (seven years ago) link

that doesn't make any sense, this whole accelerated schedule thing was his idea

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:31 (seven years ago) link

i know to some hypothetical cheering the demise of key GOP members might edge too close to "politics as sport" but for me personally at least it's "proof that at least some part of society seems willing to reject the hateful rhetoric that's permeating the government", even if it's for the wrong reasons or if it's coming from far too few people.

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:31 (seven years ago) link

they spent about two hours writing the bill because they dont care what it does, they aren't invested in how it works, only that it allows them to erase the most visible accomplishment of the obama admin

ciderpress, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:35 (seven years ago) link

it's also a tax cut to Ryan's key demo

art, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:37 (seven years ago) link

also it has to happen today because of ~symbolism~

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:39 (seven years ago) link

I think ciderpress interpretation is the correct one

Amash says Trump didn't offer anything other than Essential Health Benefits, which isn't enough for HFC. "It's a nonstarter," he says....White House only willing to offer EHB to HFC. There's not going to be a deal today. HIGHLY doubt this bill goes to the floor today.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:45 (seven years ago) link

And the thing to remember again is that this deadline is artificial. It's only there, along with the follow on to the Senate, so they can go on early April recess and claim a victory in the face of town halls that would hate them even more. Instead of having nothing, going on recess and facing town halls that will hate them anyway.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:46 (seven years ago) link

weird that they're getting stuck over 'essential health benefits' -- surely that could have been relabeled 'chick health entitlements' or something

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:47 (seven years ago) link

I don't really get this, is there a scenario where there's a vote and it loses? Or are the two pathways "it passes" and "no vote"?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:47 (seven years ago) link

the latter, basically; they won't bring it to the floor if they don't think they have the votes

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:48 (seven years ago) link

Correct. That is the absolutely last thing Ryan et al want, so either postponing the vote or just punting entirely makes more sense.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:49 (seven years ago) link

It's worth noting that a lot of muttering-turned-shouting over the past couple of weeks from right-leaning types, up to/including reps and senators, has been "Why are RUSHING this bill?" Typical current argument:

https://reason.com/blog/2017/03/23/the-gop-health-care-plan-debacle-proves

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

And again, the answer to the question is obvious, to score theoretically easy political points, and now that's clearly not possible.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:51 (seven years ago) link

How many of these chucklefucks are going to whine and cry about not getting the deference they deserve from their inferiors at Town Halls, then use that as a reason why they're not holding them?

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:51 (seven years ago) link

They already are doing that!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:52 (seven years ago) link

One reason Bannon would want Ryan down is because he's ostensibly the head of the GOP.. without him its basically Trump and lol McConnell as the last men standing.

But I never got the impression that taking over the GOP was one of Bannons goals.. maybe Im refuting my own post.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:53 (seven years ago) link

yeah if this doesn't get through before the spring recess they are gonna get *hammered* in public. (They'd get hammered anyway, but passage of the bill will basically be impossible afterwards)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 17:59 (seven years ago) link

Why?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:01 (seven years ago) link

the preposterous "most productive president ever" lie becomes more transparent if they don't get this through

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:01 (seven years ago) link

They already are doing that

Oh I know, I'm curious how the numbers change this time round

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:02 (seven years ago) link

Why?

majorities are against this bill and activists are operating at a fever pitch, when they go home to town halls and get an earful, they aren't going to return to Washington eager to pass repeal, esp not this shitty bill. And if the GOP caucus goes "back to the drawing board" it will take them *forever* and derail other legislative priorities. Ryan's gamble that this is their only chance to get this done is correct. It can't wait til 2018 session, because ppl will be freaking out about losing their seats. It's now or never.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

@SenPatRoberts
I deeply regret my comments on a very important topic. Mammograms are essential to women's health & I never intended to indicate otherwise.

it's pat

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:05 (seven years ago) link

lol

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:06 (seven years ago) link

Why?

Because the health care bill is less popular than the president.

You're going to see a lot of love. Okay? Thank you. (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:06 (seven years ago) link

Pat Roberts should have his head microwaved

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:09 (seven years ago) link

And these things only plummet further in popularity the more the bill makes it way through modifications and on to the Senate because 'compromises where nobody is happy' get made and the hard core supporters get pissed

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:10 (seven years ago) link

but I dont think this bill has any actual hard core supporters other than ryan and trump

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:10 (seven years ago) link

I doubt Trump supports it. He just wants to look like he's presidentin'.

You're going to see a lot of love. Okay? Thank you. (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:12 (seven years ago) link

well yeah the only reason he supports it is so he can be seen DOING THINGS VERY QUICKLY LIKE HE PROMISED

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:13 (seven years ago) link

Ryan is it's only hardcore supporter, Trump doesn't gaf what's in the bill

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:13 (seven years ago) link

I wonder if anyone's asked Nunes about it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:14 (seven years ago) link

"Oh I hate it. Garbage. Ryan sucks. What?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:15 (seven years ago) link

If you could believe these people are bright enough to be playing 5D chess I could see a scenario where Ryan is trying to get into a 'don't throw me into the briar patch & force a vote' thing with DT and have it blow up in DTs face but, again, you have to believe these people are bright enough...
