ooooooh i bet widmore remembers him from the island 1977 and all his 'you'll never be a great man' stuff is total horsepucky, he knows desmond is supposed to save everyone

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago) link

starting to think widmore is actually a total bro btw

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago) link

ya me too. widmore was set up to be the big bad guy but maybe not. maybe it's those shadow of the statue people.

Roz, Friday, 1 May 2009 06:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Considering Des had been shot square in the chest but still somehow managed to beat the shit out of Ben and throw him in the water, and then the next time we saw him he was being rushed to hospital looking pretty fucked, I kept expecting this episode to show how something Daniel did actually changed the future.

I'm wondering if we're ever going to know what the deal was with the changing photographs the first time we saw Miles.

I really hope they get the whole cast back in the same place for next series. Because they've all been flung out so far and wide, there are loads of characters that just haven't had enough play (a disgruntled Sayid and Desmond fan writes).

Like, are we going to go this entire season without finding out what's up with Claire? Seriously?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 1 May 2009 07:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno if it's going to happen this season but claire's gotta come back because of the whole aaron-kate nonsense.

oh yeah abt the first time we see miles... he did his ghost whispering thing without a corpse present - didn't he say he can only do it if there was a body?

Roz, Friday, 1 May 2009 07:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought he was bullshitting/conning that woman, not sure how he knew where the money was though.

I agree that Widmore is a bro, he seems like a good guy to have a beer with.

Local Garda, Friday, 1 May 2009 08:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Watching reruns of NCIS on cable the last few weeks, I've seen Widmore, Locke and Alex in various episodes. Is there any connection between these shows behind the scenes, or are there that few character actors working?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 May 2009 08:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Alan Dale is in everyfuckingthing.

He's the Head of the Australian Consulate in "Flight of the Conchords"!!!

seasonal symmetry feels very otm, i've felt like s5 has mirrored s2 as well (same with S3/S4), the whole Swan/hatch thing feels like the most obvious element

Nhex, Friday, 1 May 2009 09:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Widmore getting those bodies dug up for the fake plane is not particularly broish. Bad form I say. Not toward.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 1 May 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes he should have killed some of his own henchmen. They would have taken one for the team.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 11:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Ben Linus would have done it.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 11:51 (fifteen years ago) link

So is baby Dan in the tent Eloise stepped out of with the gun? I hope there's not some spinoff Dharma Babies series where toddler Miles and toddler Daniel solve island crimes and have daydream adventures.

mh, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

so basically this whole show revolves around daniel faraday

a character not introduced until season 4

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago) link

deus ex machina often?

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

and by deus ex machina i mean he is a device sent to save the writers from writing themselves into a corner with the lead characters of seasons 1-3

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I still don't really get what you mean.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm saying daniel faraday was probably not even an idea in the writer's minds coming into the end of season 3, and he was created as a way to link everything together

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago) link

"In fiction writing, the phrase has been extended to refer to a sudden and unexpected resolution to a seemingly intractable problem in a plot-line, or what might be called an "Oh, by the way..." ending. Some critics think that a deus ex machina is generally undesirable in writing and often implies a lack of skill on the part of the author because it does not pay due regard to the story's internal logic and is often so unlikely that it challenges suspension of disbelief, allowing the author to conclude the story with an unlikely, though more palatable, ending."

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago) link

you don't HAVE to agree with me, matt DC, but what i'm saying isn't really hard to understand

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh I agree with you - I didn't really get what you meant from "painting themselves into a corner with the lead characters of seasons 1-3". But it makes sense now.

I think they first started doing this with the Locke and Desmond plotlines in S3 and 4 - characters effectively kicking off their own destiny through some big causality loop. I'm not sure there was even an intractable problem before they introduced time travel into the story.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 14:57 (fifteen years ago) link

don't get me wrong i like(d) the daniel faraday character a lot, even though he is quite absurd. but it is pretty weak to drop a new character into season 4 of a series and have the entire storyline rest on his fate. which leaves me very curious what's going to happen with locke.

cutty, Friday, 1 May 2009 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think Faraday's floundering around is going to do much. The whole "push the button" thing covers part of the science half, but they already have all the shit linked together with the Locke actions and the fact he was visited as a kid.

mh, Friday, 1 May 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Biggest Deus Ex so far was Jack etc conveniently being magically transported back to 1977 when everyone else stayed on the plane. I'm not sure there's any way they can explain that away.

I don't have a problem with them giving a newish character a central role in the plot. It's like the Ben thing, they were probably planning to bring a scientists in all along in one way or another. Widmore's arguably as important as anyone right now, but the core of the show is patently going to end up revolving around Jack/Kate/Locke/Ben anyway.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, what happened to Jack on the original flight? He woke up in that exact spot both times, right?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 1 May 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I still love this show, but I have this horrible feeling it's all going to come down to http://graphic-engine.swarthmore.edu/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/matrix-architect.jpg

I dunno, I get what you're saying but it only really revolved around him for a couple episodes. now he's delivered the notebook to Jack and it'll be focused on the main players again

I liked that we went back to the bit with Dan crying when he saw the plane crash on TV. So Dan and Penny are half-bro & sis. Wait, do we know who Penny's mum is?
This episode seemed all a bit loose and woolly - stuff we already knew mixed with nonsensical stuff like Dan going into the Others camp. Oh and the 'People are variables because they have free will' = ultimate lame copout. I hate all that shit.

I did have a horrible horrible vision (flashforward?) of them all somehow finally preventing the hatch explosion thing, either intentionally or accidentally due to it being a cause of a different chain of events than what Dan thought, and then them literally all getting off the plane in LA, stretching, and getting on with their lives... but with island sand magically appearing in their shoes... or a plume of smoke wafting around... L O S T

Not the real Village People, Friday, 1 May 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

The getting off the plane thing is interesting, because it's not like their lives were whole before the plane crash. Everyone on the plane was trying to get away from something.

Also, did Faraday forget everything he said to Sawyer et al. about how you can't change anything, and how the only person who could was Desmond? He didn't bother to explain why that wasn't true anymore.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 1 May 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Because he got zing'd on the neck but OMG he'd never had teh SCAR!

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Friday, 1 May 2009 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think it was a cop-out - I think Dan was wrong about being able to actually change things. Maybe he tried to but ended up bumbling straight into what he was going to do anyway, ie getting shot by his mum. Not to mention trying to save Charlotte, which we already know already happened.

At some point soon younger Ellie has to run into Desmond, because otherwise the first time she sees him will be in the jewellery shop, which wouldn't make much sense.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

What I'm really hoping is that after the Incident we come to an end of any events that certain characters (Widmore, Eloise, Richard, Ben, even Jacob) already know are going to happen, and enter into some area of uncertainty--the war between the Shadow of the Statue folk (got to find a better name) and the remnants of the Others or Force Ben and Force Widmore or whoever.

President Keyes, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I think you're right about that, hence older Eloise's proclamation that she really didn't know what would happen with Desmond getting shot in 2007. I think it's fair to assume that by the end of this season there won't be any more time traveling back into the past, so the major players won't have all this advance knowledge of what's going to happen.

this episode was ok

also i'm sure somebody has maybe thought of this but what if jack kate richard eloise et al blowing up the h bomb actually IS the incident/release of ENERGY? jack gonna be all 'we blew it up why am i still on the island'.

Also: THEY WOULD ALL BE DEAD. Daniel never explained how the magnetic incident would be worse than a hydrogen bomb. A hydrogen bomb would be worse than Hiroshima.

richard_lambert, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:03 (fifteen years ago) link

except it would kill <100 people probably

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I see what you mean. But it would kill everyone on the island, and the island would probably still be radioactive in 2004? (Though perhaps that was "the sickness"?)

richard_lambert, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

The bomb would be better because it would annihilate everything so Des never causes their plane to crash in 2004. Eliminates the possibility of the crazy time loop altogether. (It gets into some hairy back to the future nonsense, but it's established by the show's logic that you can change things now, so I THINK that's how it's supposed to work.)

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:19 (fifteen years ago) link

It wouldn't end with them getting off the plane in LA, though, because there was something that made them all get on the plane. They've left that behind but all those early flashback episodes about Jin and Sun et al and all the links between characters pre-island... all that added up to something. If the island got blown up in 1977, Abbadon would never have recruited Locke. And so on.

richard_lambert, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:26 (fifteen years ago) link

With the island all blowed up maybe they wouldn't be getting on a plane in Australia to begin with.

(I use the word begin loosely)

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Something tells me the show won't end with the erasure of everything that happened in it! It would still leave questions like, does Hurley win the lottery?
