Lots of people I know love this. I saw it twice and thought Mills interfered, as usual, with the3 pathos of his own material.

That film gets better the more I think about it. Molly Haskell was pretty good on it.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:19 (seven years ago) link

Bening and Crudup are terrific together.

wish I liked the Jóhannsson score to Arrival more, it was disappointing to me.
loved 20th Century Women

Tower is something which shouldn't work, but the rotoscope pulls you in more effectively than a straightforward reenactment would and the scene where the newscaster announces his grandsons death is one of the most gut wrenching scenes of last year.

that image captures the best moment of the movie for me

Dan S, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:32 (seven years ago) link

The worst I can say about 20th Century Women is its more of a showcase for great moments than a great film. Which is to say, it made my list without hesitation.

Sometimes too quiet; I don't think Nichols has the skill yet to make that sort of stillness work. Often moving, though, especially Negga. If you got kids, watch it on a double bill with I Am Not Your Negro.

The Fits: Quite good, and surprising. I went in expecting something like, I dunno, Real Women Have Curves or some such thing and got something much closer to It Follows.

I was expecting 20th Century and Loving to be tedious awards bait (despite Nichols especially), but was pleasantly surprised to find both far more intelligent and engaging as a result.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:36 (seven years ago) link

Love Witch ran maybe 2 weeks in NY, missed it. Doesn't seem to be a DVD or on Amazon.

20th Century Women felt like it could slot in with movies like Slums of Beverly Hills and Little Miss Sunshine.

The Love Witch is apparently coming out on dvd 3/14

you dishonor it

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:43 (seven years ago) link

Love Witch played 2 special screenings in DC and that was it. Rented it last month on iTunes.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:44 (seven years ago) link

dishonor it? Maybe Little Miss Sunshine isn't that great, but Slums is a fantastic film. Sure there's no performances as great as Bening though.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:44 (seven years ago) link

Slums is solid. Little Miss Sunshine is solid waste.

Saw the James Baldwin tonight. (The right one this time.) I probably would have put it around #10 on my list. If you're going to double-bill it with something, it should be O.J. Do they ever double-bill eight-hour films?

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 03:14 (seven years ago) link

Just noticed the thread title and can only presume it's prophetic.

I'd forgotten about Rams & the club, might have voted for the former if I'd remembered it. The club hasn't stuck much beyond a vague sense that it was a bit like father ted. Should have voted for the falling too! Tracy thorn <3

Wanna see love witch, it's opening Friday here and has four showings but they're all during work hours smh

I was the #1 for the pearl button, if you like nostalgia for the light it's more of the same

wins, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 07:15 (seven years ago) link

So happy for Sieranevada, my #2 (or #3 perhaps, can't remember). Just assumed it wasn't going to get distribution anywhere anyways, so put it on this year. Now it can votesplit its way to the mid-fourties two years in a row. Yay! But wow, it's such a masterful film, perhaps Puiu's best.

Jackie should have been much higher, obviously. Among the best of the oscar-pap. The light especially. That long shot of the procession that ends up on John Jr's face inside the limo. Great film.

I'm equally annoyed by the low placing of Zootopia/Zootropolis and The Lobster.

The Love Witch looks great. I missed the only two screenings it had here, unfortunately.

And The Fits gets better and better in memory. Already wish I'd have slotted it higher.

Same here. I really loved it. I'm going to have to check out the Falling movie TT mentioned.

I'm pleasantly surprised Maggie's Plan made it. Also, Still Walking is crazy good Koreeda.

Not sure about that but it's v good. As I said at the time, at one point I genuinely thought they might get through the whole story without having a character literally explain the etymology of the word hysteria

The creepy-Crowley older brother playing with his synth *shudder* (incidentally I didn't realise the director's own brother is Paul Morley!)

btw I just saw cameraperson and am registering my intent to vote it quite highly in next year's poll, hopefully I will reread this thread & this can serve as a reminder

wins, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 20:57 (seven years ago) link

Still Walking is definitely the fourth best Koreeda, no doubt about it.

I like films such as 20th Century Women just fine, but it's sad that it's higher than Sieranevada. That's world film distribution, though, but still.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Wait til Captain America places in the top 20.

tw I just saw cameraperson and am registering my intent to vote it quite highly in next year's poll

you missed it; do better next time

i mean the only rational way to adjudicate this is no one can vote for anything until it's been released everywhere (while Frederik will continue to vote whatever's festival-only)

it's sad that it's higher than Sieranevada

yes it's sad ppl haven't voted for something they've had no chance to see. sad!

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:09 (seven years ago) link

it seems a lot of 'vital' films from last year are becoming available to people in March. Gukbe, consider an April 1 deadline next year.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

films such as 20th Century Women

what does this mean -- "released films"

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link

films seen outside of Denmark and Romania

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:18 (seven years ago) link

20th Century Women is a fine, unadventurous indie-film. Yeah, it's just easier to see. Sieranevada is exhilarating, experimental and hilarious. It's almost everything a film should be, from a master of the art who has made three masterpieces in a row.

It hasn't been shown in Denmark yet, btw. I tried to set up a screening, but failed.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:25 (seven years ago) link

Still Walking is definitely the fourth best Koreeda, no doubt about it.

Definitely!
