His name is Daniel Faraday because his mom named him after himself, duh.

I liked this episode but am scared that it's going to mean more of a focus on the Jack/Kate group again, which pisses me off. That and semi-resolving the Desmond situation means no Desmond for now, Faraday is dead, and the "new" group running for the jungle will probably get focus.

i'm confused as to why his mom was still on the island in '77. how old is farrydaye? how old was ellie in 1954? wouldn't she have recognized him from the bomb burying business?

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm assuming Daniel was born ca. 1970, since he's a professor at Oxford in 1996, and Ellie, who looked to be about 18 in 1954, could conceivably have been in her mid-30s when she gave birth to him.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe shes time traveling

p?nico (ice cr?m), Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

and more importantly, when did chuck widmore put his seed inside of her?

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

(she was a lot hotter in the 50s)

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the island obviously doesn't do much for the skin, whatever about the crippled legs/memory loss/cancer

Local Garda, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe this has been said before but i also don't get how miles looks so old for someone who is like 30.

tehresa, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

lol that's cause ken leung is like 40.

Roz, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, totally digging the salt & pepper hair and all, it just seems that being psychic has aged miles quite a bit.

tehresa, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

dude just needs some piercings.

Roz, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

My thinking is that the bomb is still there in 2004, and turning the failsafe key is what finally detonates it.

I don't get why Daniel's entire mission, as guided by his parents for his entire life, was to go back to 1977 and get killed. Assuming he's actually dead, what higher purpose does that serve? I suppose we'll find out next week.

I really liked this weeks - it feels like the whole thing is finally actually moving forward. They only have four hours to stop the explosion! Sawyer is absolutely fucked! Etc etc.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:51 (fifteen years ago) link

This episode had so many examples of conversations that started in one location, inexplicably stopped, and then picked up again in another location.

"Earlier when we were at the Orchid, you said 'x'. What did you mean by that?"

or

"Back when we were in LA, you said 'x'. Why did you say that?"

This drives me insane.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Assuming he's actually dead - pretty massive assumption, at least when you consider "dead" dead people are on this show most of the time.

tevin "ratt" campbell (Pillbox), Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

*consider how "dead" dead people..

tevin "ratt" campbell (Pillbox), Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Assuming he's actually dead, what higher purpose does that serve?

Widmore so loved the island that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Nicodle Otago (Nicole), Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

no way is Dan dead. altho this seems so obvious that ending the episode on this "bombshell" is pretty tedious - kid ben being shot had much more impact, for me at least.

i thought they were hinting at Kate getting killed off when Dan said "any one of us could die" and then Jack looked at Kate worriedly, but that also seems dumb

Holding out hope for a Jack/Kate murder-suicide.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 April 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I could imagine Jack or Kate being killed off.

Local Garda, Thursday, 30 April 2009 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't want jack to die

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Jack won't die because there is too much stuff with Christian that is unresolved, whereas Kate is only really back to find out about Claire, and it's not like Jack (aka Claire's brother!) couldn't do that himself. Otherwise, Kate really has nothing left to do other than be a monkey wrench in the Sawyer-Juliet relationship.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 April 2009 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

The show (and the creators in interviews) has been a lot more blatant about pegging Kate as a pretty selfish and insufferable woman - bringing Claire off the island (assuming she's alive/possessed and not just dead) would actually finally give her a real redemption arc. Not to mention, if they give Claire a real helicopter rescue it would actually justify Charlie's death way back in season 3.

Weirdly enough Jack doesn't really care about Claire at all despite the familial connection (then again it's not like he's had a great relationship with his own family), but he seemed to completely switch over to the Locke/herald of the island's destiny role and has REALLY become "the guy who doesn't ask obvious questions, let's just do what the island wants". Looks like he's going to doubt it or turn against it next week by trying to undo everything.

Nicodle Otago (Nicole), Thursday, 30 April 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah they were dropping pretty heavy "the Island might MAKE YOU BETTER" spoilers. I'm sure Richard can magically save him anyway.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 April 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

it wasn't a spoiler. his memory got better when he arrived, no?

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

When Daniel arrived at the island, it didn't seem like he was in the process of being magically cured. He seemed pretty composed. Did he get healed on the boat?

Also, what happened to everyone on the boat? Why were they going loco? Fisher Stevens seemed to have the same thing that Daniel had, but what about Zoe Bell and others?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 April 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Something about heading in on the wrong bearing was the cause of the craziness on the boat, no? Fisher & Desmond both suffered the same (of course, Sayid and Lapidus didn't.. but prolonged exposure to radiation blah blah... don't know where/how Fisher's was)

[DANIEL and CHARLOTTE are sitting at a fire. There is a table with cards on it before them.]

CHARLOTTE: Time. Okay, tell me. What do you remember?

DANIEL: Uh...queen of diamonds? Then we...six! Of clubs. Sorry. And then we have the red ten of...hearts, maybe?

[CHARLOTTE flips the cards over. He got all but the last one right.]

CHARLOTTE: It's two out of three. It's not bad. It's progress.

DANIEL: Three cards, Charlotte. Is that progress?

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 30 April 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't get why Daniel's entire mission, as guided by his parents for his entire life, was to go back to 1977 and get killed.

Maybe his mission was to go back to 1954 and tell the Others to put Jughead in cement. Or to write out the equation in his notebook and pass them off to Marvin Candle?

President Keyes, Thursday, 30 April 2009 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i think it's mostly the handing off of the notebook

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Not sure if it's been mentioned but how monumentally stupid was it for Faraday to go alone into a camp full of armed Others and point a gun at one guy. Couldn't they have just sent Kate (who was just there) ahead to talk to Richard? Seemed like a cheap way to get Dan offed by the end of episode.

President Keyes, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I kind of thought of that too, esp considering he didn't even really know how to use a gun.

Sundar, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

WmC, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:39 (fifteen years ago) link

The guy from EW postulated that his whole trip to the island was one big attempt to create chaos in as many ways as possible.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i kind of feel like whoever these 'what lies in the shadow of the statue' people are, they are trying to correct something that resulted from the actions of our friends who aren't supposed to be in 1977?

also i'm sure somebody has maybe thought of this but what if jack kate richard eloise et al blowing up the h bomb actually IS the incident/release of ENERGY? jack gonna be all 'we blew it up why am i still on the island'.

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 00:18 (fifteen years ago) link

you're prob right nickalicious. remember that the Swan is being built in hostile territory, it is more than likely that that's exactly where jughead is buried.

Roz, Friday, 1 May 2009 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

this whole "getting shot in the chest" cliffhanger strategy is getting a bit redundant, no?

tevin "ratt" campbell (Pillbox), Friday, 1 May 2009 03:54 (fifteen years ago) link

crazy theorizing time. shit i haven't done this in a looong while. i was wondering why Desmond was in this episode at all since they usually never cut to timelines that don't involve the centric character, and this was a Faraday-centric episode.

and i kept thinking about the link between Faraday and Des - if Faraday hadn't told Des to find Eloise, Ben wouldn't have known where Penny was and Des would never have been shot. Faraday should never have met Desmond in the hatch and he knew this, because Des didn't recognize him when he landed in 2004, nor did they remember each other from 1996. Their meeting was never supposed to happen. this is prob why eloise said "For the first time in a long while, I don't know what's going to happen next." because Des was never meant to be shot. The island's not done with him (and i think they're already foreshadowing his return with the "i'll never leave you again" speech) and here he was, close to death, which made Eloise all panicky.

So either Faraday or Desmond has the power to change history and it has to be Des. Faraday couldn't change anything - he was always meant to be shot by his mother and tell Charlotte not to come back to the island. But everything Desmond's done has changed history in some way, whether it's keeping Charlie alive until he could say "Not Penny's Boat", meeting Faraday in 1996, or going back to find Eloise Hawking. I think Desmond's a Variable while everyone else are Constants. so if anyone can stop the incident from happening, it's gonna be him.

the ew guy also had a theory that season 5 works like a mirror to season 2 (there's a long explanation why which i won't get into), but i'm gonna say the big twist either at the end of next episode or during the finale is that Desmond turns up on the island, just like how he turned up at the end of season 2. returning back to where it all started for him... the Hatch.

Roz, Friday, 1 May 2009 05:38 (fifteen years ago) link

could be completely wrong about all of it of course but it would seem weird not to include Des or Widmore in the finale somehow.

Roz, Friday, 1 May 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i feel like there's got to be a reason they've strung des along this season, otherwise why string him along all season after such a clean break from the island. sort of assuming he recovers from his gunshot and goes to widmore all like 'GET ME BACK TO THAT ISLAND BROTHER' just so he can kill the fuck out of ben, which i'm sure widmore will be all for right?

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link

srtung him along, string him along

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link

ooooooh i bet widmore remembers him from the island 1977 and all his 'you'll never be a great man' stuff is total horsepucky, he knows desmond is supposed to save everyone

MONUMENTAL_ARAB_HORSE.jpg (nickalicious), Friday, 1 May 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago) link

starting to think widmore is actually a total bro btw
