I was thinking this was a bit like McEnroe in '79 (John Lloyd withdrew from a 3rd round match after a marathon vs McNamee the previous day, Eddie Dibbs retired from their quarter-final three games in), when he only had to complete five matches for his first Slam. Didn't realise that Monfils has *never* defeated Nole :/

A couple of 3rd-set tie-breaks (Paris 2009, Montreal 2014) and a five-setter right at the start of their careers (USO R1 '05), but mostly a catalogue of beatings. Stan and Kei have beaten Nole at Slams, of course.

Woulda been happy with either Stan or Delpo. So excellent to see Delpo competing at such a level again! No shame in going down to Stan in the QFs like that.

On the kit front, all the Nike people (on men's side) are now out so we don't have to suffer the yellow and black attack any more! Hated it.

i only caught the last couple of points of the set, but my guess is that once monfils fell behind he started playing purposefully erratically, basically tanking the set, in order to 1) conserve energy and/or 2) serve first in the second set
