i can't watch amy schumer for some reason. she bugs me.

when lincoln tells ilana that he slept with someone else and she makes him go over the details outside his car and jumps on it a la michael jackson and then gives him a penis kiss...man, that scene was a tour de force. and so expertly choreographed. just watched it last night. WAY better scene than i've seen in a movie comedy in forever.
and when abbi imitates ilana at the co-op? don't get me started...

i feel you, i DO comedy LIVE at least once a week, and try to write once a day, and it is hard AFit just seems like comedy movies don't happen very often and don't happen well when they do? like if you look at the whole HISTORY OF MOVIES how often a great one is a comedy is like...*shrug?* i would probably rate super troopers as the last great one??
― no one in particular (Abbott), Wednesday, 4 May 2016 02:27 (eight years ago) link
think some comedy screenwriters fall into the trap of writing for the joke instead of just coming up with a great premise and letting the shit congeal organically. like Ghostbusters.
also otm about Super Troopers being dope
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 02:31 (eight years ago) link
Saw the film tonight. Good, not great. Gets tangled up in parts, and too much time is spent involving George Michael jokes. Still worth seeing.

― PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link
Looks intense.
Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener, Captain Phillips) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods). At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

I've never seen their show.
In conjunction with his horror film, Peele's programmed a series of 'social thrillers' at BAM's movie theater in Brooklyn, including among all the scary movies Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Not esp interested in his work as he was mega-kissing Obama's ass on NPR -- disqualifies him as a satirist.

It looks so good...and features my new favorite actor, Keith Stanfield aka Darious from Atlanta.
And Morbs, despite loving Obama, the show was often hilarious. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner I assume is being shown because his new movie is a like a horror version of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link
I almost wonder if K&P only got picked up for a second season because of Obama's 2012 victory. At the time Obama & Luther was their most famous sketch and the show was too high budget for the audience they got, and CC is famous for cancelling shows like that.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

the show did well online - i.e. youtube videos of sketches - and was kept going because of this online popularity.
i thought it was a great sketch show, would struggle to think of a recent sketch show that comes near it tbh

xxxp yeah that makes sense too. cherrypicking stuff on YouTube is generally the way to do it because most episodes would have one or two sketches that fell flat. and as mentioned the good stuff is really really good. in fact that's what often made the show disappointing since there are some sketches where you just think, "c'mon, you guys are better than this". that said the hit/miss ratio is a lot higher than any other sketch show I can think of, outside of maybe SNL from a zillion years ago
― frogbs, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:45 (seven years ago) link
K&P's sketches mostly followed a similar formula (something slightly ridiculous gradually escalates until it is the most ridiculous thing of all time), but the attention to detail in the costumes/production, the sharp writing, and the way that K&P would throw themselves into their characters elevated the show into a quality sketch show.
― ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:48 (seven years ago) link
it's a similar formula but I feel like K&P took that idea a lot further than any other American sketch show I can name. the series finale callback to the first episode was pretty brilliant, in retrospect
― frogbs, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:58 (seven years ago) link
agreed - their h/m ratio was staggeringly good compared to like 99% of sketch comedy shows - even Chappelle's Show - and their highs were really high. the great production/direction helped a lot too ofc
― Nhex, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 22:10 (seven years ago) link
That formula was SOOO consistent too, but gave some great classics like "I Said Biiiiitch" and the one where they order soul food.
But there's also some greatly absurd stuff like continental breakfast.
