The Falcon and the Snowman holds up, but to counter the praise of Penn, his annoying performance works if you consider it in terms of Spicoli does espionage.

The story rocks because it comes from Craig Thomas' 1977 best-seller.

i've seen only The Falcon and the Snowman, 31 years ago, which i didn't think was too bad despite a notably annoying Penn performance.

man what thoughtless writing. yeah, no outrageous comedies or or exaggerated dramas about the cold war before the 80s!

wargames beats all of these because it actually attempts to say something about the cold war. it may be a hamhanded moral play and its observations about everyday suburbanites living with the Bomb are not profound, but it doesn't just accept an absurd and nihilistic status quo as backdrop for a thriller or screwball comedy. it makes it the subject matter. i am sure there are still better films that go that same route, but wargames is the right 'kind' of movie for a list like this so leaving it out in favor of 'spies like us' seems particularly dopey.

Red Dawn is definitely attempting to say something about the Cold War
