Green spot otm

broderik f (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:24 (eight years ago) link

i went to a divey class old bar in downtown L.A. with my dad and he wanted a tullamore dew, which they didn't have, and the server said "let me give you a taste of this other irish whiskey we have, you may like it." and it's become the family go-to whiskey ever since.

nomar, Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:30 (eight years ago) link

I don't think we have green spot here? I'll be on the lookout for it

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:35 (eight years ago) link

where you at? it's recently become more widely available.

nomar, Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:36 (eight years ago) link

I stand corrected, it's on that price list I linked upthread, so it's somewhere

looks like it's more expensive so I'll have to go to the nicer store

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:36 (eight years ago) link

Its v much in the lineage of the other notable Jamesons, rly. Just very very good and not bad value compared to a redbreast or obv midleton

broderik f (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:37 (eight years ago) link

irish whiskey very drinkable, fun to drink imo

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:40 (eight years ago) link

As a country we would certainly seem to agree

broderik f (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:42 (eight years ago) link

I note that green spot now seems to be the same price of redbreast locally....is there a big difference btwn them over there? Might plump for latter all things being equal.

broderik f (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:43 (eight years ago) link

green spot is really wonderful stuff

I usually drink the normal Jim Beam when mixing with ginger ale (because there's no point in getting a good/expensive booze when it will be masked by mixer). Maker's for a step up from Beam when not mixing, Woodford Reserve for two steps up. I don't think I've had a bourbon fancier then Knob Creek or Bulleit - and for those, I think the fanciness is lost on my palate, so it's a matter of diminishing returns to spend more than $30ish. It's all pee and lost memories in a day or so anyway.

That said, I am so glad there are people out there taking it seriously and cultivating a connoisseurship of fine distinctions. Truly, rock on, whiskeyheads.

i like the Nikka Grain i think it might be a little overpriced tho

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 4 February 2016 22:21 (eight years ago) link

I got a 500ml bottle of Nikka Coffey Grain 12-year (normal is a blend w/ no age statement) at Nikka's Yoichi distillery last year and it's lovely.

I also heard a bartender in LA say the Coffey Grain was "made with coffee" and almost broke my glass.

controversial but fabulous (I DIED), Thursday, 4 February 2016 23:02 (eight years ago) link

I think the fanciness is lost on my palate

I think if you go BIB or barrel proof you usually do OK. The former (albeit a shrinking category) is full of bargains, and while the latter stuff can be hard on the palate - nuance tends to go out the window after your first sip of something high-proof - it promises at least a certain degree of value/quality. Though imo the magic proof is somewhere between 95 and 105. These 135 or whatever proof monsters like Stagg Jr. just kill my tongue, as much as I enjoy sipping them.

splash of water

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 23:19 (eight years ago) link

the thing about high-proof stuff that can't be replicated is the super-viscous mouthfeel. sometimes i really crave that.

call all destroyer, Friday, 5 February 2016 01:58 (eight years ago) link

pop it in the freezer for a while, has that effect. makes it taste terrible though... better to use aquavit.

just got a bottle of Port Charlotte Islay Barley, very excited to try it out this evening

Wow. I'm not super knowledgeable about Scotch, but this is unlike anything I've ever had, truly a transformational experience. Like drinking an ultra smooth bonfire, absolutely remarkable. I think I've found a new favorite.

Stagg Jr.

(thumbs up)

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 15:36 (eight years ago) link

Staff Jr varies from batch to batch, but the last couple have been pretty strong (in every sense).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 15:43 (eight years ago) link

Stagg, duh.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 15:44 (eight years ago) link

My wife got me a bottle of Bib & Tucker bourbon, my yearly $$$ bottle for my birthday. It's... different. Not bad, but not much like any other bourbon I've had recently. A more earthy flavor, almost reminiscent of Dickel?

one month passes...

do they sell this outside of williamsburg? apparently it's distilled in minnesota. my suspicion is that in different cities it's sold under different brands?

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 05:05 (eight years ago) link

Old Silverlake, Old Deep Ellum, Old Wicker Park, Old Capitol Hill...

nickn, Friday, 8 April 2016 05:31 (eight years ago) link

yep yep

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 05:40 (eight years ago) link

old fishtown

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 05:41 (eight years ago) link

the worst part about this whiskey -- besides the whiskey itself -- is that the label shows the brooklyn bridge rather than the williamsburg bridge.

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 05:46 (eight years ago) link

are you sure that's not a bottle of motor oil?

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 April 2016 10:17 (eight years ago) link

reminds me of the dude at a bar trying to tell the bartender that Old Crow has a noble lineage

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 12:49 (eight years ago) link

i only spent $9 for it. i think i'll mix it with coke or something in the future, idk. it's a truly bad whiskey. worse than old crow. worse than old granddad. not as bad as that fireball cinammon whiskey people get sometimes.

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 15:26 (eight years ago) link

old granddad is decent!

i probably posted this about six times, but old crow is, as far as expert whiskey writers have determined, just jim beam that wasn't aging right that they pulled and bottled early

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 15:43 (eight years ago) link

i won't sit by and listen to this slander about old granddad, treesh

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 April 2016 15:49 (eight years ago) link

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 15:50 (eight years ago) link

YOU TAKE THAT BACK ABOUT OLD GRANDAD

pratt truss it (dan m), Friday, 8 April 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

old granddad was the whiskey my parents kept (but never drank) in our liquor cabinet growing up and i have very specific memories of doing shots and shots and shots of old granddad as a teenager and getting really sick, just drinking way too much, having friends of mine come over and seeing them get sick too. we obv didn't know how to drink then, we were like 14-15, but because of those experiences i cannot really see that orange bottle without getting a little bit nauseous. tbh i think the very same bottle is still in my parents' liquor cabinet almost 20 years later

marcos, Friday, 8 April 2016 15:54 (eight years ago) link

My family are all scotch drinkers for some reason

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 15:57 (eight years ago) link

inexplicably we had a bottle of black velvet

bluuuurgh

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

We usually had sambuca for some unholy reason. Evil stuff, sambuca

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

would love to be in a house that just had a bottle of ouzo

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:05 (eight years ago) link

oh i love sambuca & ouzo

marcos, Friday, 8 April 2016 16:11 (eight years ago) link

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link

that stuff is very bad

Treeship, Friday, 8 April 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link

i live within walking distance of the local greek orthodox church that has a greek food fair every year. they have shots of ouzo! no whiskey, though.

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 8 April 2016 16:29 (eight years ago) link

too lazy and don't trust google but how long does whisky last?

it's taking me forever to finish this yamazaki single malt

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 8 April 2016 18:49 (eight years ago) link

Doesn't go bad. Likewise, doesn't age.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 April 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link

so my don draper routine was without purpose afterall
