proximity to the SC bus station was def a plus

I lived in SC for one year during the first dotcom boom, when it was impossible to find housing in SF (but not as impossible as it is today). I spent a lot of time and money at the SC Streetlight. Later I moved to SF (after the bust) at 16th and Castro, just uphill from the SF Streetlight. I remember walking down the hill one afternoon, buying a Go-Betweens album and then an hour later returning to buy the rest of the titles they had.
I also remember long conversations with buyers from both the SF Streetlight and the Powell Rasputin. Those must have been awesome jobs. I hope they found new awesome ones.

― sarahell, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:28 (eight years ago) link
but i confused it with 221, which was the high rise tower that D'Angelo Barksdale was dealing drugs in at the very beginning of The Wire.

― Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Saturday, 13 February 2016 01:18 (eight years ago) link
can we do this in the evening? would make it way easier for me...
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:34 (eight years ago) link
Potentially but generally speaking I think late afternoon works better for me -- 3 to 6 pm or so.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link
I ran into Οὖτις this weekend and he reminded me of this but unfortunately midday Sunday is basically worst time for me. :(

OK the homeless situation is even worse than last year. What the fuck.

Wait are you Justin? I just read your blog entry.

No
― Sith Dog (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link
I can't even spell blog
I think it's like the pee smell on Mission between 16th and 17th ... it's because the "undesirables" have been pushed closer together, not that there are more of them than before.
― sarahell, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link
So are we doing this FAP? Happy to hang out with Ned solo, but if nobody else can make it, maybe we should re-schedule?
― schwantz, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 18:44 (eight years ago) link
it's because the "undesirables" have been pushed closer together, not that there are more of them than before.
yup, they have all been herded under the 13th overpass and given tents (via a gofundme account iirc). it's insane.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link
half of the tent city got demo'd over the weekend because they started a fire behind Discount Builders Supply.

Might want to consider it. If so, it'll have to be more in mid-late March at the earliest.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 20:53 (eight years ago) link
I can do it Sunday but around like 8pm. so yeah idk pick another date if necessary
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 21:00 (eight years ago) link
Ok, how about the 28th?
― schwantz, Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:43 (eight years ago) link
works for me
in other news, Rainbow has started passing out fliers urging their customers to contact city officials about dealing with Tent City, including a list of services immediately needed, so I'm off to write some angry e-mails to people.
fuckin Ed Lee, I'm starting to hate him now
― Οὖτις, Friday, 19 February 2016 16:53 (eight years ago) link
I mean I never liked him, at best I was ambivalent, but the last couple years have been pretty angry-making

― schwantz, Friday, 19 February 2016 17:19 (eight years ago) link
it's always been a problem, but this concentration into a veritable shanty town on 13th Street has been really dramatic over the past year, it's totally unusual
― Οὖτις, Friday, 19 February 2016 17:46 (eight years ago) link
From the article, it seems like SF has been trying to do a ton ($165,000,000/year!) to try and alleviate homelessness, but as soon as someone gets a place to stay, another person shows up on the street. I don't know how much more we can do without support from the state/feds.
― schwantz, Friday, 19 February 2016 18:06 (eight years ago) link
eh sort of, this lays some pretty square blame:
Alioto maintains that the plan is “not flawed” and that it was going great for about five years. Then the jolting economy and change in mayoral leadership meant the plan was essentially shelved, she said.

― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 23:10 (eight years ago) link
28th is a maybe, given I'm going to have a VERY full and busy day on the 27th well into the evening and probably just want to recuperate a bit. March 13th, if Sunday afternoons are still the best choice, would be better for me.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 23:15 (eight years ago) link
(As for the Division clearances and all that -- what a garbage approach.)

basically forcibly relocating people to Pier 80
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 23:27 (eight years ago) link
The story on Pier 80 was behind a paywall. What's the issue with it?
― schwantz, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 00:00 (eight years ago) link
I'm not sure but I would assume there's similar complaints from the homeless as there are about other shelters ie restrictions on what they can bring in, how long they can stay, who else is there etc.
I don't like cops pushing people around, at the same time this camp literally was a health hazard - fires, feces, used needles - I mean you can't have that shit, it's dangerous for everyone involved.
