At the beginning of the film, when Lou Ivon (Jay O. Sanders) comes into the office of Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) to tell him that President Kennedy has been shot, Costner's horrified reaction to the news is real, Stone having kept the plot of the movie a secret from the cast. Sanders' broken expression is likewise real, Stone having told him just before the cameras rolled that Kennedy had been shot in Dallas.

This filmed was originally conceived as a drama with Daniel Day-Lewis originally attached to play as Gilmore, Sean Connery as Chubs, and Richard Gere as Shooter McGavin. During pre-production, both Geare and Day-Lewis left the project, and the script was retooled as a comedy vehicle for Adam Sandler. After Sandler was cast as Happy Gilmore, Sean Connery also left the project.

James Cameron's brother, Mike Cameron, plays a dead crewman inside the sunken submarine. To accomplish this he had to hold his breath under 25 feet of water while also allowing a crab to crawl out of his mouth. The shot took five takes, and Mike had to crush the crab twice because Jim took too long to set the lights.

Trivia for Howard the Duck
When the movie was broadcast on TV3 in New Zealand in 1997, during the sequence which Howard and Phil are chased by the police on a aircraft, a caption appeared on the screen informing viewers that the movie was about to be interrupted by a newsflash and that Princess Diana had died. Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris, France and died at the age of 36. In the Marvel comics, there was a character called Diana Prince was a Olympian goddess who was brought to life from clay by Themyscira in 1967 and fought crime with her foster sister Ororo. Later, Diana Prince went to American and crossed paths with The Punisher, which they had a son together called Ryan and later broke up.
Hmm, checks out.
