Meanwhile, Keane's "replacement" doesn't seem to be winning over the fans

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

its unfortunate, about alan smith. he doestn deserve what is coming his way

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 5 November 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

What is coming his way? I'm not hearing people saying he's rubbish, but I am hearing an awful lot of people asking why the hell he is being played in a position that isn't at all his.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 November 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't think he's very good, not any more. Certainly not top class, anyway. Out of his depth in central midfield, and he doesn't score enough goals upfront. Yes, I know, great determination, tremendous workrate and all that, but they said that about Emile Heskey. If Alan Smith was put up for sale tomorrow, who could you envisage buying him?*

*Maybe Newcastle, but they're menko like that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 5 November 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

yea hes been played out of position, but keane didnt really say that did he

he would go to villa

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 5 November 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I just dont get it. WHY did Fergie turn him into a midfielder? He's the last attacker I could envisage making this change. He's not got the technical skills for the job as an attacking midfielder, average passing ability, no vision for the game and he sure as hell cant hold on to the ball. Fergie is to blame of course.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 5 November 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'd agree that he's no Roy Keane, but just to play Fergie's Advocate for a minute:

He was arguably signed as an attacking midfielder-cum-striker. I might be wrong about this, but I thought he was often played as right-side midfielder at Leeds. He certainly wasn't signed for his strike rate, which was never that impressive (and worse than Viduka's). At the time United had Van Nistelrooy as the proven striker, with Forlan and Saha battling it out for the second spot, and Solksjaer supposedly about to return from injury. It seems more likely he was bought for his aggression and attitude, qualities lacking in many of the other players. With Rooney suddenly signed at the start of Smith's first season he was even less likely to be needed as striker (or he wouldn't have been if it hadn't been for Van Nistelrooy, Saha, Rooney and Solksjaer all being injured). Come this season and Ferguson was faced with virtually no transfer budget - I think the net spend was about £1 million, even though Park and VDS came in about ten others were shipped out to reduce the wage bill for the indebted new owners - and an ageing Roy Keane that needed replacing. Who else *from within the squad* could he have chosen? Some pundits last weekend were suggesting Ferguson should sign Gerrard! With what???? Besides, if he's not going to leave Liverpool for Chelsea, why on earth would he go to Man Utd?

Roy Keane has left Man U!

"Mutual consent..."

KEANE LEAVES UNITED

By Simon Stone, PA Sport

Roy Keane has sensationally left Manchester United by mutual consent.

A statement released by the Old Trafford outfit confirmed that their long-serving captain has departed with immediate effect after it became clear that his future at the club was untenable.

The 34-year-old's representative Michael Kennedy met United chief executive David Gill at Old Trafford to thrash out details of Keane's severance, completing one of the most dramatic departures Manchester United has ever known.

Forest reject.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Mark my words:

I think the chances of Keane leaving before Ferguson are pretty much zero now.
-- Dom Passantino (juror...), November 1st, 2005.

Neither of them will be there this time next year.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he's perfect for The Championship

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

He can play for Celtic if he agrees to play for free

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Scottish football phone-ins are full of it.

Apparently Rodney Marsh said he expected Keane to be involved in the Old Firm game tomorrow (to which Derek Johnstone said "Aye, singing songs in the Celtic end!")

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Scottish football phone-ins are full of it.

In so many ways, in so many ways.

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

We don't need him. Free or not.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

(also, Gerry, I don't need a lift tomorrow, thanks, other arrangements have been made already).

Sorry for derailment, folks. Erm, really, why would Celtic need him? We've already got one aging Irish defensive midfielder.

Mind you, headlines on Reporting Scotland just now "Celtic offer Roy Keane an open invitation". Hopefully just to sit in the stand.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

We've already got one aging Irish defensive midfielder

To be accurate, we've already got one aging Irish defensive midfielder who gets up right the noses of the fans and players of every team he plays against

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Heard about this earlier. Say hi to the new Irish manager as according to Joe Duffy survey today *sigh*

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Saturday, 19 November 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh, obviously the guy who embarrassed the Irish FA by walking out of the Ireland World Cup squad will be first choice to lead them to, erm, somewhere.

And the same paper says that Keane himself would favour going to the Toffees or Aston Villa.

That's the normally reliable Sunday People.

"He is a family man. He is a father to every child in the world, a husband to every woman. He never leaves the toilet seat up. He can run through a forest without breaking a single twig. Instead of arms he has gigantic double decker buses which carry children from remote areas to school. He once met Noel Edmonds on the street!!!!"

What do they say about Liddle? He's done lots of anti-Irish stuff in his 'column' so can imagine he isn't Dublin's favourite son.

"Rod Liddle, a man who left his wife for another woman"

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Truth be told I don't think I've heard any mention of him. I do like the sermonising from Dunphy. The man has no shame which is all to the good!
