I guess it's in character for Ramsey to do a crappy half-job.

I'm having great difficulty keeping up with who is who and who did what this season, more than previously. I'm blaming the baby.

If it weren't for the Renly thing my suspicion would be that Melisandre = a fraud. It would at least be a good plot twist if it emerged that Stannis killed his own daughter for no reason.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 June 2015 12:03 (eight years ago) link

This show sure loves killing kids

His plan worked perfectly - they only wanted to send an intimidating warning and fuck with Stannis a bit more without the trouble of a full on military manouevre as discouraged by Roose.

nashwan, Wednesday, 10 June 2015 13:26 (eight years ago) link

they burned up all his food and weapons!

I think after the rape and the child murder they're going to have to have someone neglect a dog in the finale to be shocking

i hope we get ambiguous wolf action in the finale

I guess it's inevitable that at some point they will run out of humans to kill, so maybe the final season will only feature animals

silverfish, Thursday, 11 June 2015 13:10 (eight years ago) link

stannis's daughter bit was genuinely upsetting.

hongro strulkington (dog latin), Thursday, 11 June 2015 13:18 (eight years ago) link

i found it less distressing than it seems many did, and certainly less than the sansa rape scene. i suppose human sacrifice to the lord of light doesn't quite hit my emotional triggers in the way that rape does.

Surprised at so few mentions of the flayed old woman who wanted to help Sansa.

I don't think anything this season has really disturbed or upset me (apart from being stressed about the whereabouts of poor Varys). Not complaining or happy about that. I think maybe I would have been shocked by the burning if my sister hadn't been so certain Shireen would die.
I think everything that previously hit me hard was unexpected.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 11 June 2015 17:45 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I'm with you on flayed woman. Thanks for reminding me of that visual.

the last thing that bothered me was oberyn dying, not so much bc i was attached to him but bc introducing him in the same season, building him up, having him fight for justice, have him almost win, and then die as an almost nihilistic punchline was a capricious bummer. since then i don't really care about what happens to any of the characters bc it seems silly to have an attachment that only exists to be exploited.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 June 2015 18:03 (eight years ago) link

yeah supposedly that's like grrm's m.o., killing off characters to challenge your preconceived notions about storytelling or whatever, but i'm with you that it seemed like a lot of wasted time on development just to axe the guy and then vaguely follow his spirit this season with the nonsense dorne scenes that are universally terrible and seem to have no real impact on the larger story (at least thus far).

head clowning instructor (art), Thursday, 11 June 2015 18:13 (eight years ago) link

i don't doubt that the everyone-can-and-will-die style of storytelling can be effective - i mean i'm still watching the show and at least some of that has to do w/ a sense of 'wow what will he do next' but you can overabuse that i think - the flipside to undermining people's attachments to characters is that they become less willing to be attached in the future i think.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 June 2015 18:18 (eight years ago) link

rubbing yr face in how terrible and futile everything is seems to be a hallmark of the golden age of serialized tv

lag∞n, Thursday, 11 June 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

The prospect of characters dying doesn't make me less attached.

I don't think any of these shows are full on miserable. There's still a lot of wish fulfilment and satisfaction to be had.
If there was like a tv version of Principles Of Lust (the most ugly, miserable and depressing film I've ever seen), I might find that hard to take.

Met a lovely, and enormous, white Alsatian a couple of days ago called Ghost. It's (elderly) owners claimed not to know anything about GoTs.

Good to know Braavos has a modern tube service in place. Very efficient.

Finally caught up with this ep, but must admit we watched it sort of out of duty and with little pleasure. Though at the end my wife busted out singing the theme from "The Neverending Story," which I guess made it worth it.

i keep thinking stannis might die, but then i remember Melisandre. i'd guess like she'll have some sort of role to play (tee hee) during the battles/war against the white walkers, just because she's got the magic thing going on. seems like her fire witch spells + dragons + special sword materials that can destroy white walkers might what ends up saving the day at the end. and if stannis died, i can't see the army switching their loyalties to her, since she's creepy and keeps trying to sleep with people and advises leaders to burn their only children with at least some frequency.

disrupt the white walkers

lag∞n, Sunday, 14 June 2015 18:53 (eight years ago) link

Letting Stannis die would be such a tv-version thing to do. He did what the red god asked of him. By the logic of the world he should be safe. So I'm going with everyone he fights against.

(We're so far away from the books, that I feel like I can speculate freely. #NoSpoilers)

Frederik B, Sunday, 14 June 2015 19:29 (eight years ago) link

not that far away. pretty sure the person who dies at the end of the last book will die tonight
