The Stannis thing is also hilarious; basically because dude was nice to his daughter, half the viewers forgot that he's a total Tywin/Roose-style bastard who is in it for the power.
― DJP, Monday, 8 June 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link
The unsullied were a slave army working for some lame regional warlord. They're tough, but they're not legendary badasses.
― polyphonic, Monday, 8 June 2015 18:44 (eight years ago) link
it's to the show's credit that it can continue to shock + anger viewers. it's not really to the viewers' credit tho.

stannis and sheerin relaysh was the second time there was a moderately heartwarming exchange between a father and a scorned offspring, followed shortly thereafter by the father at least trying to kill them (tywin and tyrion the other iirc)
― nomar, Monday, 8 June 2015 18:46 (eight years ago) link
xp these guys were supposed to master the shield, the short sword and the three spears. Only one boy in four survive training. They go out and kill babies in front of their mothers and pop off nipples like pringles. They seem fairly legendary to me.
― like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 June 2015 18:49 (eight years ago) link
sounds like bullshit to me. I bet 3 in 4 survive training.
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 8 June 2015 18:51 (eight years ago) link
Yeah would be a lot less irritated by unsullied use/swordlessness if they hadn't gone so far out of their way to hype them up in that scene.
Feel like he could just as easily have drugged one specific dude for the nipple trick though.

I'm pretty confused about the sons of the harpy now tbh.
I thought this was a perfectly decent episode, though it felt like the last scene was episode 10 material. I think every season but 4 ended with dany and her dragons?
― nomar, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link
sons of the harpy are like the Baathists in Iraq after the US-invasion--if they were all ninjas
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:08 (eight years ago) link
exactly - a fair amount of them are prob pit fighters who were out of work (may have said this weeks ago), although just bc the fighting pits are open doesn't mean they dont want to overthrow her for a lot of reasons
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link
The bit where the harpies had Dany & co. surrounded and were hesitantly attacking one at a time really reminded me of this...

I found myself being concerned about the quality of Arya's cockles and clams which she seemed to cart around all day in the sun. One character in the brothel said they were "fresh", which I found hard to believe. Anyway, that brothel scene was not only ugh but didn't really go anywhere. I expected Arya to be drafted into service by the madam when that guy kept wanting someone younger. But no, she was shooed out and that was that.

i was a bit surprised to see dany's husband unceremoniously killed, i assumed his timid chump thing was a cover for some association with the rebels but nop there he is getting stabbed up without even a hint of resistance
― Merdeyeux, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:20 (eight years ago) link
Or maybe he was a rebel but got stabbed up cause they think he's annoying too

Also the way they built up Bronn's punishment over two scenes - and it turned out to be a punch in the nose?
― painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:24 (eight years ago) link
seems like ppl are glossing over the pedo brothel scene bc of their outrage over the stannis daughter auto-da-fé, but if ever there was a time to complain about needless cruelty towards women in fiction that would seem to be it.
― Mordy, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link
idk but am hoping that dorne is just over now, that cersei's kid comes home and jamie too (or they both die) and nobody ever speaks of dorne again
― head clowning instructor (art), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:28 (eight years ago) link
xp you can't get as many easy #takes written out of that scene, salon writers v bummed today
it was a defensible scene at first (yeah these dudes would prob go to a foreign brothel), then pointless/OTT bc it's like "well of course this person we established as a blindly loyal sadistic little shit has to ALSO be a pederast before arya can kill him"
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link
that said, it does track w/ why he was so eager to be sadistic to sansa at joffrey's command back in season 2. it was ALWAYS meryn trant doing that, not any other kingsguard knights
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link
but nah we didnt really need to see that and it was uncomfortable af
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:32 (eight years ago) link
dorne sounded great when it was presented as a paradise of free-thinking hedonists, but maybe oberyn was the only fun one among them

nothing like the penultimate episode of a serialized drama in its fifth season to find out if a tv show is for you
― Clay, Monday, 8 June 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link

I like to wait for shows to end and then watch them backward to see all the characters rise from the dead

except for the characters who actually rose from the dead... they will unrise back to living.

can someone explain without spoilers what Arya's doing and who the people coming off the boat were (Gatiss is Iron Bank guy but can't remember the others)?
― kinder, Monday, 8 June 2015 21:14 (eight years ago) link
Mace Tyrell of the lollipop guild was there to negotiate finances. Sent by Cersei and accompanied by Meryn fucking Trant.
― Evan, Monday, 8 June 2015 21:15 (eight years ago) link
The bigwig is Mace Tyrell and the other guy is the guy who helped kill Arya's sword-fighting teacher in season 1. I assume she wants to kill him or something.

― kinder, Monday, 8 June 2015 21:18 (eight years ago) link
also thanks to that linkArya is side-tracked from her quest to poison the Thin Man by a familiar face: Meryn Trant. Trant, you may recall, is one of the viler of Joffrey’s King’s Guard (now Tommen’s King’s Guard.) He was the perfect lackey to Joffrey’s cruelty, a mad dog kept barely in check, and the knight who showed up to take Arya prisoner when Ned Stark was arrested. Her Braavosi sword instructor, the great Sirio Forel, saved her life then, but died at Trant’s hand. He was one of the first on Arya’s ever-burgeoning to-kill list.
― kinder, Monday, 8 June 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link
Meryn Trant is on Arya's list but not on a girl's list. a girl is going to wash out of faceless man school.
