HBO adaptation of Game of Thrones - will this be just for nerds? (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

I read a blog that described the outlines of how Littlefinger embezzled from KL but it turned out pretty boring.

after 5 seasons I have no idea how the economy in Westeros works apart from there being a bank that loaned the Lannisters a bunch of money. and the Lannisters have a goldmine that is empty.

I thought we clearly established it as a boobs & murder based economy

the economic elements havent really been fleshed out to the extent im assuming they are in the books but the point is an economy exists in a way it doesnt in say the lord of the rings

I don't think the show has pretenses of being enlightening wrt history/reality, the economic & religious elements just suspend disbelief a little. what sets the show apart is its storytelling, esp the big moments it builds towards which make things necessarily contrived. it's easy not to notice that this backward, beleaguered & enchanted world has inexplicably produced characters who are, with their secularism, haircuts & worldly fearlessness, not very different from us. the lack of difference comes I suppose from imagining people like yourself reacting to the setting rather than imagining how the setting might shape people. the idea of gritty realism is anachronistic & I can see why it might be jarring to have essentially modern characters committing medieval atrocities.

Plus dragons and snow zombies, don't forget them!

I often wake up and wonder, hmm, how would I handle dragons and snow zombies? I think they would be very scary.

i think wolf hall does a really good job of contrasting a modern sensibility w/ a tudor sensibility

"without dragons" is a surefire way to get people not to read a book.

Pretty sure she's waiting for the CGI wolf budget to get bolstered.

CGI wolf handler been waiting tables in the downtime.

But Wildfire burns forever and you can just setup a burning wall that the Wights can't get through. It all seems pretty smple to defeat them. They can't swim and there is a substance that will burn forever and keep them away. I must be missing something.

Speaking of which, where is Nymeria

In the books, Nymeria is leading a pack of Boring Wolves (i.e. non-dire) somewhere in the Riverlands terrorizing the squares, and Arya occasionally experiences dream-visions from her doggeh's perspective.

Once wildfire takes fire, the substance will burn until it is no more. It will seep into most materials so that they take fire as well. Wildfire will burn even when floating on water, it is typically commissioned for use as a weapon of war, though alchemists will sometimes use wildfire torches as a display of power. The red priest, Thoros of Myr, fights with a sword covered in a thin layer of wildfire, which would burn for an hour.

Aside: For all of the poop people throw at GRRM's prose, I mean, it could be worse.

the thing that bothered me is the fact that the Thenns shave their heads and don't wear hats. Looking at a map, they occupy the farthest north region with settlements, where presumably it is even colder than the wildling areas nearer the wall and the North of Westeros. All those people have hair, like as much hair as they can grow, and beards.

like is it just a fashion that weeds out the weak from the strong? if you can thrive without hair or a hat in a frozen wasteland, then you are part of the tribe, otherwise, fuck off and die

i think there have been indications that there wasn't much magic for a long time (coinciding with all the dragons dying) and now it's slowly beginning to reappear

It's not heavily emphasized but it seems like magic is considered taboo as well, maybe even exclusively evil.

The Father represents divine justice, and judges the souls of the dead.

The Mother represents mercy, peace, fertility, and childbirth. She is sometimes referred to as "the strength of women". Apart from human fertility, she also blesses crops with bountiful harvests. The hymn Gentle Mother, Font of Mercy is dedicated to Her praise.

The Maiden represents purity, innocence, love, and beauty. She protects the chastity of virgins, as well as protecting the innocent in general.

The Crone represents wisdom and foresight. She is represented carrying a lantern. Sometimes She is depicted as blindfolded.

The Warrior represents strength and courage in battle. He also represents people who are too lazy to google stuff themselves.

The Smith represents creation and craftsmanship. Grants workers the strength to continue their labors.

The Stranger represents death and the unknown. It is rarely prayed to.
