it's magic! since the doom of valyria no one knows how to make more.
― mizzell, Monday, 1 June 2015 16:53 (eight years ago) link
white walkers stuff was intense & v v dope
it's like "welp, it was a p good plan Jon Snow but here let me show you exactly how fucked you are"
― difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 June 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link
they used to build shit in westeros - now they're importing steel from the east.
― bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 1 June 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link
winter is winter
valyrian steel obv made of dragons duh
you can probably kill white walkers by throwing Stone Men at them
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 1 June 2015 16:56 (eight years ago) link
And valyrian steel is a special kind of... treatment of normal steel? Folding process? A totally different set of alloys?
the only thing stopping them from killing the undead was the lack of a way of making sharp enough swords
― ogmor, Monday, 1 June 2015 16:59 (eight years ago) link
iirc it's forged in dragon fire
― tsrobodo, Monday, 1 June 2015 17:06 (eight years ago) link
does a have a real world counterpart where during the middle ages smelting techniques were more advanced in parts of asia than europe and the steel was imported and v expensive and a big tech advantage for those who had it
― lag∞n, Monday, 1 June 2015 17:06 (eight years ago) link
asian dragons are significantly better for forging steel than european ones
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 1 June 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link
yeah that scene where jon snow turned the zombie king to dust felt historical
― ogmor, Monday, 1 June 2015 17:11 (eight years ago) link
Why did it take them like ten minutes to be like "maybe we should go grab that bag of dragon glass stuff!"
Also, do you think the giant grabbed that bag?
― schwantz, Monday, 1 June 2015 18:21 (eight years ago) link
did anyone notice the wildling that was chest deep in the freezing water by the dock, helping with the boat(?), before the whitewalkers even appeared? he was just hanging out in the water, holding the boat steady
― Karl Malone, Monday, 1 June 2015 18:27 (eight years ago) link
this show crazy
― nose, Monday, 1 June 2015 18:36 (eight years ago) link
giant gets to the wall and falls down dead of hypothermia
― tayto fan (Michael B), Monday, 1 June 2015 18:51 (eight years ago) link
Nights Watch dig a 2ft deep moat in front of the wall and the White Walker threat is averted.

the battle takes place at Hardhome, where the Wildlings have retreated after the earler battle at the Wall. so...the whitewalkers and the undead horde had to travel from the west to get to Hardhome, right? and no one saw them until they were about a mile away, avalanching down a mountain? come on guys you gotta send a scout or two out, this is embarrassing for you
― Karl Malone, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link
everyone too focused on the pretty jon snow
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 1 June 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link
psh yeah you send scouts to "the haunted forest" xp
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link
i'll grant that the haunted forest is too scary to send scouts too. but what about the top of the mountain range that overlooks hardhome a mile away, or the piece of land east of scurry forest where the bays pinch in from the north and south? frankly, i'm beginning to think this entire show is just made up
― Karl Malone, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link
where did all these wildlings originally come from? west of craster's keep and they've been pushed to the east as the whitewalkers come? what is north of fist of the first men? uncharted?
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link
pretty sure we saw some of the scouts flying over the edge of the cliff with the rest of the dead guys.
xpost
― AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 1 June 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link
nb by "originally come from" i don't mean to impugn the ethnic character of the widlings or suggest that they are in any way less westerosian than people south of the wall
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link
Have the wildlings ever actually battled against the walkers before? It seemed like this was the first time they really had to deal with them in earnest.
― polyphonic, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link
i think up until then they'd only really tried running and uh, running.
― AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 1 June 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link
xps to mordy, feels like in early show they were referring to reemergence of white walkers as in they have been keeping to their land beyond charted geography. Also the wall people referred to the number of horn blows having a code where three blows was white walkers but nobody had heard three blows for a thousand yrs or something along that line
― head clowning instructor (art), Monday, 1 June 2015 19:33 (eight years ago) link
err that should have been xp to polyphonic instead
― head clowning instructor (art), Monday, 1 June 2015 19:34 (eight years ago) link
i only made it to webelos in cub scouts, but iirc if you're close enough to be killed, you're not scouting correctly
― Karl Malone, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:34 (eight years ago) link
Hope all those dogs got safely on the boats.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 1 June 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link
So the Walkers have sorta leader-type guys? Time to buy them off with some Dornish wine!
― schwantz, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link
Also, not sure about the "we'll give you some land" plan for the Wildlings. Is that on the West bank of the wall?
― schwantz, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:04 (eight years ago) link
it looks in the map like if you go west enough you can just walk around the wall. why didn't the wildlings do that?
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:06 (eight years ago) link
The wall is really more for the Wildlings, I think. The mountains in the west are supposed to be pretty rough going.
They'd get farming land in the Gift:
The Gift extends immediately south of the Wall, stretching from the eastern to western coasts of Westeros. The southern border is roughly at the same parallel as the southern tip of the island of Skagos (slightly further north than the northern edge of Bear Island). The Kingsroad runs through the middle of the Gift, as it passes from Winterfell to Castle Black. The Gift is bordered to the south by the lands of House Umber, which are centered on their castle-seat at Last Hearth.
― polyphonic, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link
what's going to happen to the indigenous inhabitants of the Gift? is no one currently working it?
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:13 (eight years ago) link
why don't u read the books if you're interested in all the ephemera
― Clay, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:15 (eight years ago) link
There are probably a few left over who haven't been murdered by wildlings but it's largely uninhabited.
― polyphonic, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:17 (eight years ago) link
"if you want the answers to your questions why don't you wade through thousands of pages of terrible prose to find them?"
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:21 (eight years ago) link
what's going to happen to the indigenous inhabitants of the Gift?
probably the same thing that happened to the farmers whenever Rome settled some barbarian tribes on their land.

this is basically what life is man idk
― Clay, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link
Instead of reading the books you can just rewatch the scene where Jon Snow makes a speech about it
― polyphonic, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:25 (eight years ago) link
i kinda forgot that the wildlings just went on a pillaging spree through that area which i shouldn't have bc that little kid is obv torn up about it but i kinda tune out whenever he starts emo'ing
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:28 (eight years ago) link
that little kid is totally going to try to assassinate Jon, right?
there was a scene just like in the 100 and the little kid killed the son of the President

u can just google any ephemera fwiw theres a wiki of fire and ice

the gift rather
i'm a terrible television watcher
― Mordy, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link
i was thinking that the angsty kid at the wall will end up being good friends with one of the little wildling kids of the cool lady who sent them off in a boat and fought valiantly and then was transformed into an undead. then the kid will be like "now i can sympathize with jon snow's decision because i'm frenz with the wildling, and also now i like sam more too, cool"
― Karl Malone, Monday, 1 June 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link
that may be a too clean and heartwarming story arc ending for GoT, though
the moment he decides to open his heart to the wildlings some roose bolton mercenary bursts through the door, stabs him in the heart + flees
