It's well established, but it doesn't help that the people on the island never take the one extra step they could take. Ben could have cut John's head off, or Sayid could've slit kid Ben's throat, or etc. etc. etc., but they never do it because the writers have made all the characters incredibly stupid in those sort of moments.

they aren't werewolves. or vampires.

cutty, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

My point is that they know the island has the ability to heal people, and yet they still "kill" people in the conventional manner without taking the extra step necessary to perhaps finish the job. And this episode goes a long way to re-suggest that Sayid is capable of anything, and yet again he doesn't finish the job.

Some of them are, but we won't find out until season six.

sayid, capable of anything, maybe still felt bad for little ben, beaten by uncle rico/laslo holyfeld

cutty, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I think avoiding kid throat slitting is more a concession to sponsors who are probably not jazzed with shooting kid in the chest, so probably they are on thin ice already.
CLEARLY EVEN THE ISLAND HAS MORE POWERFUL MASTERS...

if the island's going to heal them anyways, why bother expending the extra energy on chopping off heads or whatever?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Why bother killing them in the first place?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the point is that it's harder for the island to heal someone who's completely dismembered.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Why bother killing them in the first place?

Most of the time, a bullet is sufficient to kill someone, e.g., Libby, Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Ethan, Alex, Rousseau, both Colleen and Danny Pickett, etc.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Probably none of those people are dead. In fact, they now have super zombie powers.

how do we know?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link

you would think sayid of all people would be suspicious of the "mysterious stranger hits on you then turns out to be person sent to spy on you/kill you"

major lolz at "YOU USED EXACTILLY THE RIGHT AMOUNT, HEHAHAHAHAHA"

Local Garda, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

anyways sayid doesn't have the same knowledge of all the time travel nonsense because he's been separate from the rest of the crew for the most part, right? like he wasn't there when faraday said they can't change the future by modifying things in the past, i don't think. so maybe he thinks one bullet to the heart is enough to fix everything

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

his exact thought was prob: "this is nothing a bullet to the heart won't fix"

Yeah, that was pretty irritating. Poor poor Big Mopey, boo hoo hoo, that musta been some scotch.

So Radzinsky definitely said to call Ann Arbor, right? WTF.

I'm curious how many more episodes we'll get before we see Desmond again...I mean, his name is still in the credits, Hawking said "the island isn't done with you", Ben probably killed Penny or something. I'm as into all this 70s Dharma shenanigens as the next guy but wtf we need a Constant here.

GLEEPGLOP BLOOPBLORP (nickalicious), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I bet Jack will refuse to try any doctor-y stuff to save Ben's life and will be all "lol I'm only qualified for custodial services duhurr".

Funny moment in the cafeteria where Hurley's like hey Jack wtf w Sayid and Jack's like Sawyer's on it and Hurley's like really you're gonna not stick your fucking face in this one?

GLEEPGLOP BLOOPBLORP (nickalicious), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago) link

so when do the dharma detective society find out about the time travel on the island? wouldn't marvin chang-candle-wickman have already told horace about this to the point that he might not think sayid was a lunatic.

Local Garda, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago) link

From the Swan orientation film:

The DHARMA Initiative was created in 1970, and is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan.

nice ep with teh old skool flashbacks. sayid shooting ben was obv from when he said he knew why he was here, surely. i was like 'he doesn't know about the rules innit'

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 26 March 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

The reason he doesn't know about the rules is because no one ever fucking talks to each other on this dumb show that I love.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:11 (fifteen years ago) link

jaw dropped when i realised he was actually about to shoot ben

when he was talking to ben in moscow he just seemed so child-like naive. "what do i do now..." i suppose the emotional detachment might have that effect but still.

dunno how they were able to deal with living with Kid Ben for that long but guess we won't see anything more from those missing three years

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

btw nothing in this ep made any sense - dharma getting all freaked out and deciding to kill sayid cause he knew things (which he clearly knew before he got there since all hed done is get captured and seen a model for a second - and so the other hostiles likely know these things too) and because he might do something to them (except that hes in their jail). sayid refusing to go along w/sawyers plan cause he knew what he had to do except that itd be a lot easier to kill ben if he was released from jail than if hes executed.

ice cr?m, Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:36 (fifteen years ago) link

xxpost polyphonic hahaha yes

Dharma's reaction was a little strange. While they just caught him, since he knew all that information they could have assumed he'd been spying on them for a long time. However, they weren't sure if he was still on the Hostile side due to being handcuffed. Radzinsky didn't have completely terrible logic, even if it was overly bloodthirsty. I think in the end they just went with Horace being pushed emotionally by his wife as the tiebreaker - if not for her I think they would've kept Sayid around longer and tortured him more.

Sayid refusing to go along with Sawyer's plan did make sense, though, since he already knew by that point Ben was going to break him out. That was the better way to go, and easier to isolate and kill Ben that way rather than hunting him down inside the village.

Nhex, Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

o sure have a kid break u out of jail over yr jailer letting u out

ice cr?m, Thursday, 26 March 2009 23:00 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not so surprising that they'd decide to kill him. Most of the dharma dudes are kinda vindictive jerks!

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 26 March 2009 23:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i liked the "even the new mother wants you dead" line

akm, Thursday, 26 March 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago) link

"How did you find me?"

"...I looked..."

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 26 March 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it's fairly well established by now that the Dharma dudes are complete fucking idiots - "hey look it's our magic truth serum that never fails oh hang on we don't understand what he means let's just kill him anyway". Also Sawyer being ice cold in essentially throwing his friend to the wolves so the rest of them can keep up their nice lives. It was actually Ben that sent the flaming van into the house in order to bust him out, right?

Sayid is basically fucked now. He can't go back to Dharma, he can't go out and hang with the Others because he just tried to murder their pet project. I totally called Sayid trying to kill Ben, btw, the big surprise at the end was that Sayid got away alive. I thought they were going to kill him off from the moment I saw young Sayid.

More than anything I want to know where the fuck Daniel is.

Matt DC, Friday, 27 March 2009 00:17 (fifteen years ago) link

not missing Dan and his stupid whispery voice tbh. when he eventually starts doing cool stuff again then we'll talk.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 27 March 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

the Sayid & Ilana scene in the bar had the show's most eye-rolling dialogue in quite awhile.

thought Kate & Juliet scene was just as bad.

also Claire on drugs > Sayid on drugs (but this was funny too)

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 27 March 2009 00:40 (fifteen years ago) link

who was the Dharma hottie sitting next to Radzinsky during the Sayid death vote

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 27 March 2009 00:41 (fifteen years ago) link

In the previous episode I already frowned upon how 'comfortable' Sawyer looks in his Dharma-world. Now he even voted in to kill Sayid, like a true Judas. Could Sawyer get too attached to his happy family life with Juliet and his gained respect, that he'll eventually be 'switching teams'? And what would that mean for 'future' Sawyer?

(he was bringing the lolz this episode though, some great lines sqeezed into a fairly straight forward episode)

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 27 March 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

"I totally called Sayid trying to kill Ben, btw

I think he should. We need to start some gambling mechanism here... How's $50 ajirabucks sound?
Any takers for who dies next week?
I think it would be a neat plot twist if kid ben actually stays dead, tearing some hole in the plot-time continuum or something.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 27 March 2009 00:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm trying to say it was totally fucking obvious

cutty, Friday, 27 March 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago) link

It sure seemed likely, plotwise, but kid killing on primetime network TV is a pretty risky proposition. Also enough people on this thread seemed surprised enough that it should be worth $50 ajirabucks where:

$5 ajirabucks = Walt will return in a future episode
$5000 ajirabucks = Sawyer comes back as a horse

Philip Nunez, Friday, 27 March 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Play money aside, I think Sayid is toast now. The love of his life is dead, he's fulfilled some weird destiny by turning Ben into OMG BEN. I think he's going to be the major character death this season.

WmC, Friday, 27 March 2009 02:06 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah looks that way. too bad as he's so much more watchable than Jack and Kate aka KACK

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 27 March 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I was just disappointed Sayid did not snap Ben's neck like he did w/the chicken.

Event Horizon (Nicole), Friday, 27 March 2009 03:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm wondering what's going on in the "real world". we know that Oceanic 815 made the news so surely another commercial jetliner disappearing with every member of the O6 on board would make even bigger headlines? i'm guessing this is how Widmore realizes that Ben's beaten him to the island.
