I could have sworn I read 2-3 years ago that Sanderson had died, and I was so relieved and happy the next time I saw him in something and realized it wasn't true.

it was driving me crazy, i knew i recognized him and could even picture his face from blade runner but could not remember what movie it was or what else he was in ... i had to look it up in the middle of the episode

he didnt trip as hard as i thought... like when they tied up his arms for his protection i expected he'd be thrashing around, foaming at the mouth etc and instead he just got spacey and started telling lots of truths

occurred to anyone else that the reason that ben has been such a super manipulator of sayid/jack/etc is that (due to the rules of time travel in lost world) he's actually known who they were all along from when he was a kid?

And the reason he thinks Sayid is a killer is because one of his their first interactions was Sayid saying "You're right, I'm a killer" and then shooting him?

yeah i thought that too. anyway, go back to that scene where sayid sees ben coming on to the plane. the look on ben's face... he totally knows what's about to happen.

At least this all explains why Future Ben lets Hurley go at the dock when he's got Jack, Kate and Sawyer all tied up. All dude ever did to Ben was throw a burrito at him.

I have to think that Ben remembered Sayid shooting him, and he worked to get him back to the island so that it would happen--including doing stuff like turning Sayid an assassin after he had retired from his violent ways (twice--once after Nadia's death and again after Locke's.)

I'm sure everyone's picked up on this already, but I felt the episode was a throwback to SSNs 1 & 2, with lots of philosophy thrown at us Nature(Sayid is Natural Born Killer) vs. Nuture (Father trying to teach boy to kill/"Sweet Kid" Ben becomes evil due to abuse) and of course predetermination vs. free will. I'm sure the scene where Sawyer ends up voting to kill Sayid plays into this.

and back to proper flashbacks

The writers have well established that there is no free will in the show. If the island (the writers) determines that Ben needs to live, then no amount of bullets can kill him. Thus, Sayid's best strategy is really to brain kid Ben with a wooden oar.

That said, looking forward to adult Ben to start dematerializing in front of everyone while jamming on Johnny B. Goode.

It's well established, but it doesn't help that the people on the island never take the one extra step they could take. Ben could have cut John's head off, or Sayid could've slit kid Ben's throat, or etc. etc. etc., but they never do it because the writers have made all the characters incredibly stupid in those sort of moments.

My point is that they know the island has the ability to heal people, and yet they still "kill" people in the conventional manner without taking the extra step necessary to perhaps finish the job. And this episode goes a long way to re-suggest that Sayid is capable of anything, and yet again he doesn't finish the job.

I think avoiding kid throat slitting is more a concession to sponsors who are probably not jazzed with shooting kid in the chest, so probably they are on thin ice already.

if the island's going to heal them anyways, why bother expending the extra energy on chopping off heads or whatever?

I think the point is that it's harder for the island to heal someone who's completely dismembered.

Most of the time, a bullet is sufficient to kill someone, e.g., Libby, Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Ethan, Alex, Rousseau, both Colleen and Danny Pickett, etc.

Probably none of those people are dead. In fact, they now have super zombie powers.

anyways sayid doesn't have the same knowledge of all the time travel nonsense because he's been separate from the rest of the crew for the most part, right? like he wasn't there when faraday said they can't change the future by modifying things in the past, i don't think. so maybe he thinks one bullet to the heart is enough to fix everything

I'm curious how many more episodes we'll get before we see Desmond again...I mean, his name is still in the credits, Hawking said "the island isn't done with you", Ben probably killed Penny or something. I'm as into all this 70s Dharma shenanigens as the next guy but wtf we need a Constant here.

I bet Jack will refuse to try any doctor-y stuff to save Ben's life and will be all "lol I'm only qualified for custodial services duhurr".

when he was talking to ben in moscow he just seemed so child-like naive. "what do i do now..." i suppose the emotional detachment might have that effect but still.

dunno how they were able to deal with living with Kid Ben for that long but guess we won't see anything more from those missing three years
