yeah Larry + Billie Holiday + teepee was lols.
poor baby ben no wonder dude grew up so messed up. the kid who plays him is awesome btw - he's got the bug-eyes + monotonous speech pattern DOWN.
― Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:17 (fifteen years ago) link
is this the most cold-blooded killing of a child ever shown on TV?
― Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link
Could be, though I feel like there might've been a terrible one or three on The Wire. Besides, Ben's probably going to miraculously survive. The kid is doing a pretty good acting job, too.
Another thought: Man, I hope this doesn't mean they're going to kill off Sayid. Finding your life's real purpose isn't a good thing on the Island! Will we ever get his wife's death scene? Will it happen during his own death episode?
― Nhex, Thursday, 26 March 2009 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link
If Sayid really wanted to kill the kid he would have beheaded the little fucker and seen what the mysterious healing island has to say about that.

i was thinking more of primetime network TV but yah The Wire has had a couple of brutal ones. xpost to nhex
and yeah kid-ben is not dead although he is most definitely gonna turn out an even worse person thanks to being shot by the guy he was rescuing. nice one sayid!
lols @ "three years no burning buses, y'all are back for one day..."

Interesting--
In Moscow when Sayid exits outside mirrored writing "Олдхэм Фармасьютикалс" can be seen above the door which is "Oldham Pharmaceuticals" transliterated into Russian

kind of a weak episode in terms of keeping the wtfs coming but i was truly surprised by the ending

I could have sworn I read 2-3 years ago that Sanderson had died, and I was so relieved and happy the next time I saw him in something and realized it wasn't true.
― WmC, Thursday, 26 March 2009 14:58 (fifteen years ago) link
it was driving me crazy, i knew i recognized him and could even picture his face from blade runner but could not remember what movie it was or what else he was in ... i had to look it up in the middle of the episode

he didnt trip as hard as i thought... like when they tied up his arms for his protection i expected he'd be thrashing around, foaming at the mouth etc and instead he just got spacey and started telling lots of truths
― s1ocki, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago) link
occurred to anyone else that the reason that ben has been such a super manipulator of sayid/jack/etc is that (due to the rules of time travel in lost world) he's actually known who they were all along from when he was a kid?

And the reason he thinks Sayid is a killer is because one of his their first interactions was Sayid saying "You're right, I'm a killer" and then shooting him?
― mh, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah i thought that too. anyway, go back to that scene where sayid sees ben coming on to the plane. the look on ben's face... he totally knows what's about to happen.
― Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link
At least this all explains why Future Ben lets Hurley go at the dock when he's got Jack, Kate and Sawyer all tied up. All dude ever did to Ben was throw a burrito at him.
― lolling through my bagel (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link
oh i dunno hurley's still got 30 years or so to piss off ben.
― Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link
I have to think that Ben remembered Sayid shooting him, and he worked to get him back to the island so that it would happen--including doing stuff like turning Sayid an assassin after he had retired from his violent ways (twice--once after Nadia's death and again after Locke's.)
― President Keyes, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link
sayid really shouldve thought to put tons bullets in that kids brain pan
― ice cr?m, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm sure everyone's picked up on this already, but I felt the episode was a throwback to SSNs 1 & 2, with lots of philosophy thrown at us Nature(Sayid is Natural Born Killer) vs. Nuture (Father trying to teach boy to kill/"Sweet Kid" Ben becomes evil due to abuse) and of course predetermination vs. free will. I'm sure the scene where Sawyer ends up voting to kill Sayid plays into this.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link
and back to proper flashbacks
― Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link
The writers have well established that there is no free will in the show. If the island (the writers) determines that Ben needs to live, then no amount of bullets can kill him. Thus, Sayid's best strategy is really to brain kid Ben with a wooden oar.
That said, looking forward to adult Ben to start dematerializing in front of everyone while jamming on Johnny B. Goode.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link
It's well established, but it doesn't help that the people on the island never take the one extra step they could take. Ben could have cut John's head off, or Sayid could've slit kid Ben's throat, or etc. etc. etc., but they never do it because the writers have made all the characters incredibly stupid in those sort of moments.

they aren't werewolves. or vampires.
― cutty, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link
My point is that they know the island has the ability to heal people, and yet they still "kill" people in the conventional manner without taking the extra step necessary to perhaps finish the job. And this episode goes a long way to re-suggest that Sayid is capable of anything, and yet again he doesn't finish the job.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link
Some of them are, but we won't find out until season six.
― lolling through my bagel (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link
sayid, capable of anything, maybe still felt bad for little ben, beaten by uncle rico/laslo holyfeld
― cutty, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link
I think avoiding kid throat slitting is more a concession to sponsors who are probably not jazzed with shooting kid in the chest, so probably they are on thin ice already.CLEARLY EVEN THE ISLAND HAS MORE POWERFUL MASTERS...[picture of geico lizard]

if the island's going to heal them anyways, why bother expending the extra energy on chopping off heads or whatever?
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link
Why bother killing them in the first place?
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link
I think the point is that it's harder for the island to heal someone who's completely dismembered.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link
Most of the time, a bullet is sufficient to kill someone, e.g., Libby, Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Ethan, Alex, Rousseau, both Colleen and Danny Pickett, etc.

Probably none of those people are dead. In fact, they now have super zombie powers.

you would think sayid of all people would be suspicious of the "mysterious stranger hits on you then turns out to be person sent to spy on you/kill you"
major lolz at "YOU USED EXACTILLY THE RIGHT AMOUNT, HEHAHAHAHAHA"
― Local Garda, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link
anyways sayid doesn't have the same knowledge of all the time travel nonsense because he's been separate from the rest of the crew for the most part, right? like he wasn't there when faraday said they can't change the future by modifying things in the past, i don't think. so maybe he thinks one bullet to the heart is enough to fix everything
