People, they love blood. They love action. Not this talky, depressing, philosophical ILX 2014 Film Poll Thread - Voting closes Friday, Feb. 21st at Midnight EST.

Voted.

25x films roughly as: Fave films released this year (10) ---> Fave old films caught at one screening this year that have made me a better human (9) ---> best torrents I have watched that have added to my film knowledge and also rocked a bunch (6).

Just saw the overnighters; would TOTALLY revise to add that to a top twelve

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:44 (nine years ago) link

forks you can redo your ballot. just note it so i don't absentmindedly count you twice.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:54 (nine years ago) link

Morbs: I thought starting the thread with a pic of Jake G would be enough for you but I've given up trying to please you.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:55 (nine years ago) link

at his most unattractive? from his second-best film of the year?

minimum 'serious' standard for yet another ilxpoll has to exclude a here's-all-the-movies-i-saw turdballot.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 February 2015 21:03 (nine years ago) link

Guk: will look into that when i'm not away from home

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 February 2015 21:08 (nine years ago) link

Morbius, I really want you to vote! Though, if you're not voting for Himizu, never mind I guess.

Cherish, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link

Voted! #TeamTsai.

Didn't vote for a single Sion, can't figure out release dates.

Frederik B, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:32 (nine years ago) link

Stray Dogs is my number one.

Cherish, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

Not in the UK yet :-)

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:35 (nine years ago) link

x-post: Mine as well. It will probably never get a theatrical release in the UK, from what I can tell. Certain British writers have been fuming about it for a looong time. Should get out on a dvd, packed with Journey to the West, which is also on my list.

Frederik B, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

It has screened in the UK as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival, which is where I saw it.

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Friday, 20 February 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Prob screened at the London film fest too(?), and it had one screening in Dec at a vue cinema in Stratford, which I couldn't attend.

It should get a one week run at the cinema sometime during the year..

― Frederik B, Friday, February 20, 2015 2:32 PM (26 minutes ago)

Why Don't You Play in Hell, Guilty of Romance and Himizu ALL got late 2014 theatrical runs in the US (NYC only, but still). So all three are fair game, imo. Will likely vote for the latter two myself. Land of Hope, so far as I know, hasn't ever had a US release. And I expect that Tokyo Tribe will get some kind of showing this year.

Haven't ordered my list, but Stray Dogs will certainly be in the top 5.

Sono's Love Exposure looks like a must watch - anyone seen it?

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 23:40 (nine years ago) link

it's great fun, overwhelmingly ambitious & features a magnificent onscreen love triangle, but i'm not sure you trust my opinion

bojaxhiu mother derive (imago), Friday, 20 February 2015 23:43 (nine years ago) link

I trust the tale not the teller.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 23:44 (nine years ago) link

or the post not the poster

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 23:46 (nine years ago) link

ok cool, well if you fancy a multigenre 4-hour blowout in which the alienation inherent to japanese youth culture is deconstructed to within an inch of its life, go for it

bojaxhiu mother derive (imago), Friday, 20 February 2015 23:47 (nine years ago) link

Love Exposure is fantastic.

i lasted about an hour with Love Exposure; it just was sapping me

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:22 (nine years ago) link

No chance of a 12-hour deadline extension, I suppose (not just for me, fwiw)

bojaxhiu mother derive (imago), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:48 (nine years ago) link

I'm submitting a 5-film ballot, btw - have seen many more than that, but don't want to give the others points, really

Voted.

Bumping as a reminder that voting is still open until tonight and, let's be honest, tomorrow morning at 9am EST when I'll likely get up and have a look at this.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Saturday, 21 February 2015 15:18 (nine years ago) link

Since we are in the final voting hours, please allow me to rep for this brilliantly terrifying short film

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 3 is even better, but I'm not voting for a 6-minute internet video (well, not this year)

bojaxhiu mother derive (imago), Saturday, 21 February 2015 21:01 (nine years ago) link

come on you all lets show Morbs what he is missing show the Oscars where its at.

xpost

DHMIS3 is good too, yes, but it still struck me as a bit too smirky and self-counsciously "ironic," almost verging into Too Many Cooks territory. The difference is hard to explain, I guess, but with 2, I feel it is a little harder to identify what is just so wrong about it. Then again, it may be that as 2 was the first one I watched, it was simply the one that utilized this whole thing's power to blindside me with its creepiness the most effectively.

That shit right there is precedented. (cryptosicko), Saturday, 21 February 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link

Ballot sent.

Final bump. 24 ballots in so far. You have until the morning (9am EST, Sunday)

and remember guys, as with all elections, the more people who vote, the worse the results will be.

I fucking voted, goddamn fuck me

There is hope for the world yet..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 22 February 2015 09:55 (nine years ago) link

Voting is now closed. Will roll out all results tomorrow as I have work on Tuesday plus I think Morbs would prefer it fast, like ripping off a band aid.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 22 February 2015 15:33 (nine years ago) link

Voted for 7 in the end, you'll be happy to hear Morbs, and only one of them is a facepalmer, maybe

bojaxhiu mother derive (imago), Sunday, 22 February 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

got my ballot in at 1:00 in the morning, ordering makes no sense, but at least it's done.

Eric H., Monday, 23 February 2015 13:47 (nine years ago) link

Yes. In fact, it will begin shortly and continue throughout the day with breaks here and there based on when I can get to the computer.
