People, they love blood. They love action. Not this talky, depressing, philosophical ILX 2014 Film Poll Thread - Voting closes Friday, Feb. 21st at Midnight EST.

like we get it, he's Job, and then here comes the local priest "have you heard the story of Job?!" and it's just too much.

re: raid 2, i saw it in theaters and had high hopes after the great experience of the first raid. it didn't quite live up.
watched "test" last night and it was great! we tried john wick and my girl freaked out when reek from game of thrones killed a puppy and that sorta put that on ice after fifteen minutes of grumpy keanu

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

Test is pretty OK for a gay movie, not anything for EOY lists imho.

Borgman is way too fucking vague about its central (non-)metaphor.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

i've done some peripheral work with sidra bell, the choreographer on test; i thought the dancing was a+. as a portrait of west coast gay life at the dawn of the post-AIDS era it felt honest but wtf do i know

I seriously rep it for anyone who enjoys deep character study and the word 'bogun'.

"bogan"

I liked Test quite a bit--more so as it went on, which is usually the opposite of how it works with me. The lead was immensely empathetic, the soundtrack was great (queued up Laurie Anderson's "Born, Never Asked" the moment in ended), and it had a strong sense of time and place. I was beginning to worry that Stranger by the Lake had temporary ruined me for new queer-themed movies, so my reaction to this (while nowhere near as good as that film) was something of a relief.

That shit right there is precedented. (cryptosicko), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:17 (nine years ago) link

and Visage's "The Anvil" (Steve Strange RIP).

Test outside my top ten.

Still trying to squeeze a couple more in. I'll vote soon!

Cherish, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 02:31 (nine years ago) link

Ends tomorrow night, which I just realised is the 20th so I can extend it through to Saturday night if people like.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 February 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

Oh! The "Feb. 21st" up there threw me off; naturally, I failed to notice the "Friday" beside it. Had my next three days of viewing planned (Vic + Flo Saw a Bear, The Dog, 4 Moons) in the hopes of fleshing out what will still be a paltry ballot.

That shit right there is precedented. (cryptosicko), Thursday, 19 February 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link

Take your time. I looked at the dates wrong. I won't even look at it until Sunday morning anyway.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 February 2015 15:59 (nine years ago) link

25x films roughly as: Fave films released this year (10) ---> Fave old films caught at one screening this year that have made me a better human (9) ---> best torrents I have watched that have added to my film knowledge and also rocked a bunch (6).

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 20:01 (nine years ago) link

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:44 (nine years ago) link

forks you can redo your ballot. just note it so i don't absentmindedly count you twice.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:54 (nine years ago) link

Morbs: I thought starting the thread with a pic of Jake G would be enough for you but I've given up trying to please you.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 20 February 2015 20:55 (nine years ago) link

at his most unattractive? from his second-best film of the year?

minimum 'serious' standard for yet another ilxpoll has to exclude a here's-all-the-movies-i-saw turdballot.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 February 2015 21:03 (nine years ago) link

Guk: will look into that when i'm not away from home

Morbius, I really want you to vote! Though, if you're not voting for Himizu, never mind I guess.

Cherish, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link

Voted! #TeamTsai.

Didn't vote for a single Sion, can't figure out release dates.

Frederik B, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:32 (nine years ago) link

Stray Dogs is my number one.

Cherish, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

Not in the UK yet :-)

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:35 (nine years ago) link

x-post: Mine as well. It will probably never get a theatrical release in the UK, from what I can tell. Certain British writers have been fuming about it for a looong time. Should get out on a dvd, packed with Journey to the West, which is also on my list.

Frederik B, Friday, 20 February 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

It has screened in the UK as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival, which is where I saw it.

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Friday, 20 February 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Prob screened at the London film fest too(?), and it had one screening in Dec at a vue cinema in Stratford, which I couldn't attend.

It should get a one week run at the cinema sometime during the year..

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 23:06 (nine years ago) link

Didn't vote for a single Sion, can't figure out release dates.

― Frederik B, Friday, February 20, 2015 2:32 PM (26 minutes ago)

Why Don't You Play in Hell, Guilty of Romance and Himizu ALL got late 2014 theatrical runs in the US (NYC only, but still). So all three are fair game, imo. Will likely vote for the latter two myself. Land of Hope, so far as I know, hasn't ever had a US release. And I expect that Tokyo Tribe will get some kind of showing this year.

Haven't ordered my list, but Stray Dogs will certainly be in the top 5.

Sono's Love Exposure looks like a must watch - anyone seen it?

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 February 2015 23:40 (nine years ago) link

it's great fun, overwhelmingly ambitious & features a magnificent onscreen love triangle, but i'm not sure you trust my opinion

I trust the tale not the teller.

ok cool, well if you fancy a multigenre 4-hour blowout in which the alienation inherent to japanese youth culture is deconstructed to within an inch of its life, go for it
