SJS has my vote.

James Morrison, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:29 (sixteen years ago) link

In motion!

I vote Sarah Jane. I think. It's kind of tempting to give Benton a vote, even though he wasn't really a companion.

clotpoll, Friday, 2 May 2008 02:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I watched The Face of Evil for the first time this week, and now I'm feeling a bit bad about the fact I didn't vote for Leela.

But also, have started watching The Krotons, and Zoe is very good too.

JimD, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently the guy who played Harry Sullivan wrote a Who movie that never got produced. "The finale of the film was to have taken place on a giant pinball table, the holes in the table being portals to other dimensions."

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link

sounds like Douglas Adams' cricket-based Who movie.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, except instead of cricket, pinball.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link

well, yeah

but why cosmic sport the theme for *two* proposed terrible Dr Who movies? was hardly anything that was a feature of the series. it is a bafflement.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Trying to be epic and everyman-intellectual at the same time?

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 8 May 2008 05:45 (sixteen years ago) link

the 3rd Hitchhiker book started out as a Doctor Who story, right? Anybody know what the original script was, or how much he had to change?

kingfish, Thursday, 8 May 2008 05:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the Gaiman book had a fairly decent precis.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 07:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the 3rd one is kind of based on the whole Key to Time season.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 8 May 2008 10:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Doctor Who Meets Scratchman (the Ian Marter script discussed above) was something him and Tom came up with in the pub and really got quite far up in the planning stage. There was a good article about it in DWM a year or so ago.

Doctor Who And The Krikkitmen got turned into Life, The Universe and Everything; but chunks of it get reused in various places in The Pirate Planet. Ironic, really, since he stole the core idea of the TARDIS turning up at Lords from The Dalek Master Plan.

Of course, Adams' real Who crib was turning City Of Death (to a lesser degree0 and Shada into Dirk Gently.

I read about this years ago in one of those 25th-anniversary books they put out. Apparently the idea got scrapped when they went to see Star Wars and realised that the whole level of audience-acceptable special effects on the big screen had just jumped well beyond the limits set by BBC-style budgets.

Nyssa 2

^why?

DavidM, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:03 (sixteen years ago) link

From Comedy Central's campaign blog: Which Candidate Makes the Best Sidekick for Which Dr. Who?

Feel free to make your own "but Mccain is older than the doctor!" joeks. Everyone else apparently has.

kingfish, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm surprised neither Leela nor Mel got any votes. I mean I certainly wasn't going to vote for either of them but I figured someone would...

Viceroy, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Mel?!? In yer Blue Peter demographic maybe.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 05:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Watching the Tom Baker episodes right now (I'm about midway through Genesis) I am so down with Harry. Dude rules.

I'm not sure I really get the Sarah Jane love, she seems a bit of a blank slate to me.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 08:36 (sixteen years ago) link

What happened to Leela? Was my vote disqualified?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the best aspects of Sarah Jane are

1) tends to be a bit cheeky with the doctor, and ribs him affectionately quite often.

2) has a Rose-like enthusiasm for the whole adventure thing, but carries it off less smugly.

3) is good at going off and looking after herself when she needs to

4) is cute.

Also surprised by the Nyssa votes, she really was a black slate. And yes, also surprised by the lack of Leela love too.

JimD, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Adric 5
Ace 5

Lol trolling.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Oi, my adric vote was legitimate.

LEELA WUZ ROBBED

rener, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I would have voted for Leela, despite all of my Zoe-perving upthread.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 13:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Leela totally robbed. Donna votes seem mental but haven't seen any of this year's episodes. Ace votes could well be genuine from gentlemen of a certain age, I thought she was the best companion since before JNT when I was a kid (have never seen any McCoys since first airing).

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:37 (sixteen years ago) link

(Dudes, don't click that at work!)

Matt DC, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Ace was good. I voted Liz Shaw as I thought no-one else would. I never thought for a minute Leela would get 0

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Am finally watching Castrovalva. This Nyssa is actually kinda hott.

YA RLY

HI DERE, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 05:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan, when exactly did you start watching this show, anyway?

kingfish, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 05:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Good lord, the haircuts really do get worse, don't they? The one chick looks like Lisa Ruddy and the cross-eyed doofus kid looks like Alistair. Only the sorta ginger one in the crushed velvet get-ups has anything going on.

GotDAMN Tegan is annoying; like, moreso than Adric ever could be

the haircuts didn't help things, either. Lisa Ruddy had a better look.

haha, the set design of this story predates Apple's recent designs by 2.5 decades. Bright white sets, flat-screen monitors, shiney white curved plastic, etc
