uh i was looking for somewhere to talk about simon schama's programme on the history of the jews, which i thought was very good but this is prob not the thread for that

o shit when did that start?

finished last night, six parts (i think)? my first exposure to him, thought it was great.

bear in mind tho it was all new to me, idk how 'depp' it would be considered or anything

how much it was like depp, an important consideration imo in a documentary/history programme

o ffs. i saw a trailer for it, i guess it must have been ages ago, and promptly forgot all about it. i enjoyed his history of britain back in the day so was down for this.

not a fan of Schama but i think my problems are more about the relative shallowness of TV history, i saw the new book in Waterstone's the other day and am interested

Activists have attacked historian Simon Schama’s documentary series on the history of the Jews, claiming it should not include his opinions on the creation of Israel.
The fifth and final episode of The Story of the Jews will focus on the relationship between the Holocaust and the creation of the modern-day state of Israel.
But supporters of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign have complained to the BBC, claiming it was “alarming” that Professor Schama should be allowed to discuss the Shoah.

i'd assume they took exception w/ an assertion that the victims of the shoah justified a nationalist self-determinated jewish movement like zionism, but i defer to darragh who actually watched the doc which i have not yet.

I'm generally a supporter of Palestinian rights, but branding it alarming that a Jewish man can put forth his opinions on the Holocaust is rather alarming in itself.

I dunno, sounds like I'd have some issues with his his views, but is the programme purporting to be anything other than Schama's opinions?

I can understand the objection. I think if a "historian" did a long program on "the history of the Palestinians" that concluded with editorializing on why Israel should not have been founded, folk would be pretty upset

yeah it is purporting to be objective history, going by history of britain, but saying something "makes the case" for something isn't an absolute endorsement of that case & the bbc say "dissenting voices" are included.

i think the BBC often editorializes in the other direction; it's not like the UK media is lacking for pro-Palestinian voices.

well sure - no one ever feels like their side is getting a fair hearing (i remember there's a great beirut study to that effect) but c'mon - ever read comment is free, listen to the bbc, notice all the london-based arabic newspapers?
