I thought I remembered him saying he wasn't thrilled with the last season, that he was going too fast and wanted to take a lot of time to rejigger the show

If the 2nd season didn't do it for you it's probably not gonna work at all going forward.

I can't recall which epsiodes were in which season, but it's all been of a consistently high quality as far as I'm concerned.

the 3 "Late Show" eps were my favorites yet

frogbs, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

first ep was p great, second one w the rich model sort of petered out

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I feel like the same types of gags are circulating over and over--quirky weird authority figure (Lynch/Grodin), sluts-and-nuts scoring-above-my-level, etc....

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

I felt that way about the rich model storyline as it was unfolding, but the resolution and scene with the lawyer were pretty hilarious. Loved Seinfeld being an utter dick to Louie as well.

Has he been in it before? Can't remember.

yeah. Seinfeld was p great

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

Yeah not a ton of laughs in these first two. Scenes with the kids are great (loved the "carry my backpack" bit), but the manic pixie model stuff was kinda pointless, and not really funny. Maybe he should REALLY embrace the zero continuity aspect of the show and destroy his life in a different way for each episode...

schwantz, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:52 (ten years ago) link

he should die at the end of every episode

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:52 (ten years ago) link

/become destitute/end up in a Turkish prison etc. etc.

I did like some of the touches in this one...at the cafe with Tom Papa with all the zombie-like teenagers on their phones in the background - it would seem very cliche and kinda dumb if he focused on it more, but as a background detail it was neat.

i love how rather than getting up in arms about it, louis kindly helped to herd the teenager absorbed in his cell phone around his chair so he would not hurt himself. it's like he takes their zombie-ness as a given, and just works with it.

This last one, ep 2 The Benefit, is some masterful shit. I loved the ending.

calstars, Friday, 9 May 2014 03:03 (ten years ago) link

idk I was bored as shit by that episode

UUUGHHNNN this show is so fucking good

Did not like the rich model episode. Have not seen the "fat girl" one that Lefsetz is raving about as being brilliant, in his email/blog thing.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

"fat girl" one is less than brilliant but its good, the diffused end particularly

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:20 (ten years ago) link

Opinion seems to be split on last night's. Some people are all "yes, Louie, yes!" and others are all "thanks, white MAN for hijacking a woman's platform you jerkface!"

I haven't watched it, but I already know both sides have a point.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:21 (ten years ago) link

i didn't like that one mostly b/c i don't like when louis works in character monologues to get across a moral/ideological/cultural point. it always feels super clumsy to me whether or not i agree with the content.

Clay, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:21 (ten years ago) link

Like to think Louie was throwing some material out to give the thinkpieceratti something to do before season finales started coming thick and fast.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:46 (ten years ago) link

thought the second elevator episode was more entertaining actually. was the russian girl from Stranger Than Paradise?

Darin, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 05:39 (ten years ago) link

oh wow!, it was

schlump, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 14:19 (ten years ago) link

liked both of these. Vanessa's extended rant/monologue was good and definitely novel otoh it seemed to go on forever. Elevator bit was great. Subway bit was also great. That was yet another actress as his ex-wife right? Funny that he's carrying on the (unacknowledged) interracial conceit. Would be funny if he brought back Vanessa for another episode but had her played by a skinny actress.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

It was the same actress...

Number None, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:31 (ten years ago) link

huh for some reason I thought someone else played her in that episode where he went to Miami

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

didn't enjoy being lectured by a fat chick

calstars, Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:23 (ten years ago) link

i think several women have played his ex-wife (over the course of the whole show) but the same woman has been playing her for a while.

espring (amateurist), Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:29 (ten years ago) link

naw

"didn't enjoy being lectured by a fat chick"

Am I missing out on something here? or are you just a pathetic little prick?

The former

calstars, Thursday, 15 May 2014 07:23 (ten years ago) link

I thought both were really good

I like that he's comfortable pairing two discrete ideas into a single episode, it's like an Animaniacs cartoon or something

, Thursday, 15 May 2014 10:11 (ten years ago) link

otoh it seemed to go on forever.

This was definitely by design - the single take, the floating camera really situates you in Louie's discomfiture

Also when she nearly breaks the fourth wall, when she goes "imagine somebody over there saw us two right now" and points at the camera

, Thursday, 15 May 2014 10:54 (ten years ago) link

I loved that during the whole thing a constant stream of a hundred joggers is passing by.

Walter Galt, Thursday, 15 May 2014 11:03 (ten years ago) link

Yes both in the scene by the water and in the subway I was very conscious of the other people around and the camera, which seemed to pan nimbly at moments when the extras could have been in the sh. I guess those were extras? Or the general public?

calstars, Thursday, 15 May 2014 13:22 (ten years ago) link

He's a good director, the subway scene was actually very tense.

Yeah also losing your child in public is I think every parents nightmare but I don't know if it's treated a lot in media

this reminded me of the scene in that Jeff Bridges country-singer movie where he stops into a bar for a drink and his granddaughter (?) wanders away.

did appreciate the disembodied hand on her shoulder/voice asking her if she's lost

i don't understand; is some gamer "playing" that character?

i haven't played a video game in 15 years, I have no idea what is happening there.
