I ordered a G+T in Monterey and got given Gin and Soda (wtf? is this normal in US of States?). I complained, but they said they didn't have tonic, so they gave me the biggest martini I've ever had as a free replacement. Score.

I gotta say that this sounds a bit suspicious. He orders a beer he hates, and then he bitches about it? Unless y'r a princess, beer-gone-"bad" is at least drinkable: It's not like wine that's turned to vinegar. I suspect that the reason he ordered the Foster's (the "non-bad" specimens of which resemble "recycled" beer, granted) was so that he could stage a little drama.

The right thing to do in this situation is simply to order a different beer without attempting to "return" the offensive brew. If asked why, then explanations may be given.

(that said, i agree with the central premise here: if the dude hates fosters, why buy fosters?)

My parents were restauranteurs so I grew up in the business and am normally really polite to servers and customers. The only time I ever had to ask a bouncer to thow someone out was when I was bartending and a regualar (and friend up until that point) got so drunk that he started harassing me and demanding that I fuck him. I think I was pretty justified in having him ejected and subsequently banned from the bar.

Also agreed. Tha fact that he ordered Fosters in the first place makes the whole thing weird.

At the very least, there are degrees of "having-gone-badness" of beer. There's "bad" beer I won't drink that nevertheless is less vile than Red White and Blue.

The bit that tips me off that the brew may not have been gag-reflex-inducing is the proclamation that this fella knows beer/wine up and down. My bet is that he was drunk ("middle of the night") and decided that he had something to prove to his companions.

Also, the salience of the host's "flamboyance" is unclear, apart from a gratuitous "fag" slam.

I'm sorry I even mentioned that he dislikes fosters because he drinks beers he's not fond of frequently as a change of pace and usually doesn't say a word.

He does tend to 'expect' high levels of quality and we've had to talk to him about him sweating the small stuff too much, but he only brought it back because the beer itself went bad. I've never seen him return a beer otherwise.

Plus...he offered to pay for it anyway. Suspicious? nah.

I kind of did this once only I went behind the bar when the bartender went out back and started pouring and downing my own pint. Wait - that may have been why I got kicked out. It's a little fuzzy.
